May 19: Wookie Hooky Day

(Title stolen from the Bee) I didn't spend the day waiting in line for this movie. I intend to see it in a few weeks when the lines have gone down. Some people are, predictably, disappointed after all the hype anyway. Our local reviewer posits that Lucas has forgotten how to work with people after his amazing successes with special effects.

I did spend the day waiting for a call from the CASA office. Oh, well. Maybe tomorrow.

Yesterday I saw Midsummer Night's Dream and loved it. As I wrote to the family: "Terrific, terrific! Kevin Kline makes a wonderful Bottom, no kinky puns intended, and Stanley Tucci was born to be Puck. And Rupert Everett is always worth watching, and Callista Flockhart can do more than Ally McBeal, and, and, it was beautiful.

"The music wasn't bad either, all classical, including Mendelsohn's music from Midsummer Night's Dream, how odd. (I didn't realize that the Wedding March was actually from this!) "

Tonight is Loretto High's graduation, so Rich is down being an usher at the Cathedral.

Meanwhile the Oops! war goes on. I doubt that King William had in mind a legacy as proposed by Tom Brokaw, who defines the Clinton Doctrine as "bomb the little countries and appease the big ones." There's more and more evidence that he was complicit in the China problems, not that anyone cares. In Kosovo, no, I don't think we should have ignored the genocide, but there are about 700,000 more people out of Kosovo than would have been if we hadn't bombed. What we needed to do was arm the KLA (terrorists or not) as we did the Afghans when they were fighting the Russians, and that wasn't even a civil war. Madeleine's War, Monica's War, was a big mistake, and it doesn't get better. I do think Jamie Shea should just record his speech for use every day: "The air war is working. We are continuing and intensifying the bombing. We regret hitting the xxx and the resultant civilian casualties, but there are hundreds of thousands of Kosovar refugees." This was the speech four weeks ago, it was probably the speech this morning. They'll settle for Milosevich's timetable, now that he has what he wants, and why on earth would the refugees want to return home to the rubble we've made for them?

Too bad. If it weren't for those Congressional wimps, we couldda had Algore. ("If Al Gore invented the Internet, why didn't he make it safer?") We SHOULDDA had Algore, and we wouldn't be in this mess. 613 days left in the reign of King William the Rapist. Lots and lots of time for him to find more mischief.
