February 17: Ash Wednesday

The Golden Triangle from the
submarine deck.
And thou, when thou dost fast, anoint thy head and wash thy face, so that
thou mayest not be seen fasting by men, but by thy Father, who is in secret, and thy Father,
who sees in secret, will reward thee.
--- Matthew 6: 17-18
I've never understood why we have that as the Gospel reading and immediately turn around
and get big black crosses of ash on our foreheads which we are to display proudly all day!
Whatever. "Remember man, that thou art dust, and to dust you shall return." Rich and I made
it to the 9 o'clock school Mass.
I'd already messed up my Lent. There are two days in the whole year one fasts and abstains
from meat... and I started today with a sausage burrito!
The fasting didn't work either. I came home from my walk with low blood sugar, shakes and
sweats, and grabbed a fast banananana. Oops. Somehow, though, I don't really believe God's
gonna get me.
The sun came out for a short while and I took the dog
up and down the streets in the neighborhood, a total of 2.6 miles. There were kids playing
basketball, and lots of people walking dogs, one man on foot looking for his friend's new
house. The only birds I saw were some magpies and a pair of mockingbirds. I don't think the
mockers stay over the winter, so that was a good sign.
Rich went to a Loretto board meeting, and then when he got back we took off for the
Jesuit-Sacramento High game. I climbed the bleachers to our favorite top spot, center
line, and when I stopped I overbalanced and wrenched my shoulder. THIS is why I wanted
Tai Chi, and why I didn't like my teacher. She was more into the martial arts aspect of
Tai Chi rather than
the health-and-balance part. She would be telling us "You can break their collarbone this
way" when all I was interested in was being able to walk across a room without breaking
my OWN collarbone!
We had 17 players, and they only had 11. Still, it was a hard-played game and interesting
till the 4th quarter. It ended at 86-59, us. Friday night is the league championship
game against Christian Brothers, the rival school, so that'll be interesting.
