January 25: None of the Above

I'm three more pounds down, the lowest this year. Friday's walk was about 3 miles, I'm guessing, and Saturday was probably closer to 4. I worked in back twice, didn't send any letters though I did almost finish one, and I got rid of some 10 magazines. (Only leaving a couple thousand to go, I guess.)

I made a couple of big mistakes with my shoulder recently. First, I went to pull the blankets on Rich's side. This one was writhe-on-the-floor unpleasant. Then Saturday I scooted my chair a little. Same muscles, grab and pull, and I guess the shoulder is not ready for it. Sunday morning I slept in and it was 12 hours between pills. Yesterday was really tough and last night no picnic, so I guess I have to build up the medication in my system again. I've been lazy about the strengthening exercises, too, though I'm still stretching. Ow.

I pulled out my Lemmings CD and it does play a lot better with the faster CD. However, the music doesn't go on and on and on, but stops before the Lemmings all make it, and I miss the "uh-oh!" when they're about to spray lemming guts all over.

On Saturday, coming home, we noted this line of clouds stretching from horizon to horizon. It was thin, somewhat like a contrail only wider, and the western half of it was sunset-ruddy. We figure it was the edge of the Artic cold front which was coming our way. This air mass dumped FIVE inches of snow on the Grapevine in Southern California and the first snow Bakersfield has had in 20 years.

I admit to kind of wishing a small mop-up tornado would just carry away the Felon-in-Chief yesterday, which would solve everything and probably send a pretty strong message as well. Oh, well. This last batch of tornadoes wasn't as close to Blytheville (where we used to live) as the Jackson, Tennessee ones earlier. I am reminded, of course, of our stint in Tornado Alley. Rich was off in Guam the time we had the closest call. I had the three small children and it was a tornado watch, and the wind was whipping up... I moved us all to the most enclosed room in the house, the main bathroom, and decided not to go to the storm cellar at the end of the block. It was a pretty scary night, but the closest hits were 70 miles away. I've been closer here, when one funky Sunday afternoon a tornado hit a school three miles away! (Sunday. Nobody there!)

Saturday night vandals struck at the Sacramento City Cemetery. This is the historic pioneer one. The gravestones which were broken are not the historic big names, but "mother" of 100 years ago and such. I'm sorry we didn't adopt a plot yet. I'd kind of like to do that, taking care of one plot (planting a butterfly garden, I think) and researching the occupants. I hope the kids that did this brag it up and get caught. It's so easy to destroy stuff and so hard to create it.

I saw a guy with clipboards as I left the store yesterday, and avoided his eyes and dashed past, when I heard what he was doing. He was collecting signatures for an initiative to add None of the Above to the ballot. Oh, yes. I might have appreciated that for the Governor's race last time, though I didn't vote for the Libertarian because I really truly didn't want Davis to win. (And so far, I was right!)

We went to Jesuit to watch the Theater Sports (improv.) Some of the skits were really lame, but they did well with some of the others. The best was a girl we know from Loretto, who has been in drama for 4 years and was really quick on her feet. Rich totally confused the moderator by suggesting "ennui" as an emotion. He did that 4 years ago, the last time we went to one of these, though I don't remember the word he gave them then.

I enjoyed the Golden Globes, but what was this with Camryn Manheim? She offered to share her award with any Senator who voted to dismiss the case today. She's a good actress, so suddenly she's a legal expert? It really didn't fit in with the rest of the festivities. I think the Senators should hold her to her word: Boxer: "OK, it's my turn this week." Pile-of-Dung Harkin, "No! I get it! Your turn is NEXT month!"
