RICHARD WARREN COLONY, SMD
Minutes of Meeting
May 2nd, 2009
The May 2, 2009 meeting of the Richard Warren Colony was held at the lovely Timuquana Country Club at 4028 Timuquana Road, Jacksonville, Florida. Kay Atkins was our hostess and provided beautiful table decorations. A social time was held from 11:30 to 12:00 noon.
The meeting was called to order at 12 noon by Governor Laura L. Farmer, and followed with the Invocation by Elder Jeri Ruane, and the Pledge of allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. There was a total of 23 members and guests present.
Governor Farmer greeted members and asked each one to give their name, and name of their Mayflower Passenger, and introduce their guest. Florida State Society Governor Robbie Burt and his wife Trudy Burt were visiting as well as prospective members Richard and Jon Wheeler, prospective junior member Anne Miller (daughter of Kathryn and Garrett Miller) and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Nelson from Amelia Island.
Governor Farmer then announced that Laura E. Miller, daughter of member Kathryn Miller, won the Florida Society 2008 Scholarship Winner. Laura is at school in New York so her mother, Kathryn, proudly read her daughters’ winning composition on what it means to her to be a descendant of one of the pilgrims of the Mayflower. We were all very impressed and delighted to have one of our prospective Junior Members win this prestigious award.
A delicious lunch was served. At the conclusion of the luncheon, the meeting resumed with an interesting program given my State Governor Robbie Burt. In addition to speaking to us about membership, Governor Burt gave details about the upcoming Annual Thanksgiving Cruise on the Emerald Princess on November 22nd. 2009 and encouraged all of us to join him and other members from around the state. The cruise will depart from the port at Ft. Lauderdale.
The Colony order of business followed:
Governor Farmer announced that the Minutes from the Feb. 7th, 2009 meeting were posted on the Colony website and that copies of the last 2 meetings were available today.
Historian Linda Fitzmeyer made a motion that we approve the minutes of the past two meetings. The membership voted and the minutes were approved and will be filed. Governor Farmer also announced that in the absence of Secretary Babs Hartman, who was attending the graduation of her grandson from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Past Governor Lois Swan would take the minutes.
Treasurer George Lockhart reported a balance of $3,156.62. From that balance today’s meal would be paid. Treasurer Lockhart also asked that we make a decision whether to drop 2 members, Ellie Mitchell and Thomas Pendleton, who have not paid their dues for 2009. After a discussion, Alice Irving made a motion that we drop the 2 members. Historian Linda Fitzmeyer seconded the motion. Governor Farmer asked for a voice vote. The motion was carried that we drop the 2 members.
Historian Linda Fitzmeyer’s reported that we have had 4 new members added to our Colony since the last meeting: Mary Blue-Ster, Wendie Biringer, Hannah LaRosa and Patricia Porter. Currently there is 1 application at Plymouth awaiting verification: Victoria Ferber. There are 9 “Rayl” Family applications out waiting for additional information, with 5 additional perspectives working on papers. Historian Fitzmeyer has 1 application at home almost ready for mailing. To date, 4 MF books have been donated to the Colony for research: volumes 1-3 of Richard Warren, and the “In Progress Book” for Francis Cooke. She also uses her own MF volume of William White. Historian Fitzmeyer announced that our membership presently stands at 46.
Governor Farmer announced that we have 16 Junior Members. She suggested that we
need to appoint a junior member to work on encouraging the juniors to attend meetings and to organize some activities that would interest them in participating more in our society.
Governor Farmer brought up a discussion regarding members of our society visiting our local schools to present programs on the pilgrims and the Thanksgiving Story. Everyone agreed that this was an excellent idea and several members expressed interest in participating in this project.

Saturday, Nov. 14th, 2009, Saturday Feb. 13th, 2010 and Saturday, April 24th, 2010.
