46.1 Introduction: Detoxifying After Subway Academy
The beginning of every chapter reflects a new path being followed. A new path that results from a decision being made at a crossroads. The crossroads at the end of chapter 45 was dominated by the issue of what to do with respect to my position at Subway Academy. My decision was to take a year off, unpaid leave.

This new direction involved not only a new chapter, but represented the end of one stage in my life and the beginning of a new one, as illustrated on the table below:
Stage: | Chapters | Dates: | Ages: | Description |
1 of 6 | 21-22 | 1955-1974 | 1-19 | public school, family, no health issues |
2 of 6 | 23-27 | 1974-1984 | 19-29 | university, insecure income, few assets, healthy |
3 of 6 | 28-45 | 1984-2004 | 29-49 | work (includes up to end of first semester at Subway Academy), stabilization of income, many issues resolved, assets built up, minor health issues |
4 of 6 | 46-53 | 2004-2015 | 49-60 | semi-retirement, consolidation, assets built up, equity peaks, first signs of aging such as major health problems |
5 of 6 | 54-60 | 2016-2030 | 61-75 | active retirement, but increasing health problems |
6 of 6 | 60-63 | 2030 on | 75 on | elderly, serene, poor health |
The intention was that chapter 45, having ended with my successfully completing my first year at Subway Academy One, would lead to my year-long leave of absence as the beginning of chapter 46 being restful and recouperative. Therefore the turning point was supposed to be the end-of-school-year/beginning of leave. However the school year ending was not as dramatic as what ended up happening. Almost immediately after moving all of my stuff out of Subway Academy One, there was a fire at Manning. This
dramatic discrete event made for a more dramatic turning point. The end of chapter 46 would also be a dramatic discrete event. Like giant bookends they loom large and affected every aspect of my life during this period. The previous chapter ends and this chapter starts with the fire at 485 Manning Ave. (see 46.3) at a precise time, 1:00 pm 30 July, 2005. This sets about a chain of events, including negative relations with neighbours, Kirk and Susan at 487 Manning (also burned in the fire); negative relations with tenants (Rob, Dave, Charlie, Darren, Erika); the need for me to work on house or at least supervise contractors to make repairs; stress which exacerbated my health problems; -- all eventually leading to my decision to sell the house. Selling the house is the second huge event which ends the chapter, also occuring at a discrete time, 9:30 pm, 30 August, 2006 (see 46.18). There was a tense transitionary period of five weeks between sale and closing, but since closing turned out to be simply an anti-climactic carrying out of what was agreed to on 30 August, I have placed this period at the beginning of chapter 47 (see 47.1).
