    40.1 Fifth Trip to Poland (5 of 8)

    40.1.1 Introduction

    This period was again dominated by travel, and I felt very much divided between being in Toronto and being overseas. In this case, the trip east was not so much to go to Poland, but rather I flew to familiar Warsaw as the starting point for my land travels.

    I did have the opportunity that December of 1998 to got caught up with old friends, before taking the train.




    40.2 Expanding the Know Universe: First Trip to Ukraine and My Organizing / Solidarity Work There

    40.2.1 Introduction

    40.2.2 Kiev, Ukraine

    On 10 December, 1998, I travelled to Kiev, --which was my first time in Ukraine.

    40.2.3 Brief Review of Recent Ukrainian History

    • July 16, 1990: Ukraine's Supreme Rada (Council) adopted the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine.
    • August 24,1991: Ukraine's Supreme Rada (Council) adopted the Act Proclaiming State Independence of Ukraine.
    • December 1,1991: Referendum in Ukraine confirmed the Act Proclaiming Independence of Ukraine. 92% or the electorate voted for Leonid Kravchuk as first President of Ukraine.
    • July 14, 1992: Ukraine signed the "Agreement On Partnership and Cooperation Between Ukraine and the European Community and its Member States" in Luxembourg. The agreement was ratified by the Supreme Rada of Ukraine November 17, 1994.
    • July 1994: Leonid Kuchma was elected President of Ukraine. November 17, 1995 Ukraine became a member of the European Council.
    • June 18, 1996: Ukraine's Supreme Rada (Council) adopted the Constitution of Ukraine.
    • July 9, 1997: Ukraine signed the "Charter on a Distinctive Partner-ship between NATO and Ukraine."
    • November 14, 1999: Leonid Kuchma was re-elected president of Ukraine.


    40.2.4 Transparency Index of Corruption for Ukraine

    An organization known as Transparency International has what they call a "corruption index". This index ranks countries in terms of their level of corruption. The organization is a global coalition of anti-corruption groups.

    Immediately upon arriving in Kiev, before doing any site seeing, I hooked up with the representatives of the Ukrainian Teachers' Union. I had communicated with them by e-mail for some time before this, and seemed to know them.
