Oakwood C.I. Community Culture

Oakwood C.I. has been at 991 St. Clair (at Oakwood Ave.) for 95 years, offering a traditional full-year program. During this time it developed a reputation for preparing students for continuing their education at the post-secondary level. Its stated goal is to: "educate students in an atmosphere that promotes learning and encourages maximum development of the student as an individual."

Several programs have made Oakwood well-known: music program; dramatic arts program; athletics (especially basketball); co-op education; Oakwood Youth First Project (co-op which links Oakwood students with the arts and culture industry); UNICEF projects, and many other clubs and organizations.

Art Department at Oakwood

The photo at right was taken in my art room in November, 1995. On the left is __________. On the right is art department head, Marlene Jackson. Both transfered after this year. I am still thinking about my recent trips to Russia. I am wearing my Soviet Red Army hat, called a 'Ushanka'.

Geography

Unlike the frequently changing Art department, the Geography department had remained the same for decades. Berry, ___, ___, and John Buckley had been at Oakwood since the 1970s. John (left) and Berry (right) are shown below at our annual June year-end party.

Spring, 1996: Second Semester

Since Oakwood is not semestered, the second half of the year was a continuation of the same courses as in the first half.

At this time, I also participated in workshops organized by the Board, and our Art coordinator --Angie Wong is at the right with the papers. Peter is fourth from the left. The photo below is of all of us at Harbourfront. Joanna (sunglasses) and I are in the centre.

37.2 Strike at Great Lakes College, 1995

The fall of 1995 for me was dominated by my active support for the striking teachers at a local independent school called Great Lakes College. My intention was to help them organize under the OSSTF, which would have been the next stage after resolving the situation they were striking over.
