36.5 Union Work, Art Teachers' Council, and Political Activism![]() 36.5.1 IntroductionTeaching is always about more than just what happens in front of students. To ensure good teaching conditions, teachers must have good working conditions, and this means union work. As well there are councils for most subjects. And then there is political action as well, to affect election results, legislation, and adequate funding.36.5.2 Union Work36.5.3 Art Teachers' CouncilI participated in the art teachers subject council extensively during the years 1993 to 2000. The group was headed up by Angie Wong. The photo below shows our group (plus Joanna) in front of the Harbourfront art gallery at Queen's Quay.

36.7 Zeitgeist: Politics and Society, 1994 to 1995![]() Federal PoliticsIn the federal election of 25 Oct. 1993, the Progressive Conservatives had been annihiated. Mulroney had taken power back on 17 September, 1984. Under Mulroney and then Campbell they had gone from being the government with a majority of seats to loosing their party status with only two seats. Since then, the Liberals under Cretien had held power.Ontario PoliticsDuring its five years in office (September 1990 to June 1995), the Rae NDP government became the spearhead of Canadian big business's offensive against the working class. The Rae regime slashed billions from social spending, imposed onerous tax hikes, promoted "workfare" as an alternative to the existing welfare system and implemented a "social contract" which suspended the collective bargaining rights of one million Ontario workers and slashed their pay by five percent. The legacy of the five years of NDP rule was the creation of a political constituency for the election of a Tory government on a class-war program patterned after the Republicans' Contract with America. Harris and Tories Elected in Ontario Election, June, 1995Second Quebec Referendum, 1995Ever since the first referendum in 1980 (see Chapter __, section __) half of Quebec had been wanting another referendum to achieve independence.
The outcome of this second vote, on 24 _____, 1995, was neck and neck, with the federalists winning 50.6 % and the separatists 49.4%. It is also noteable that over 90% of the eligable population voted.
