35.9 Politics and Society During This Period

35.9.1 Introduction

35.9.2 Americans in Somalia, 1993

The Americans going into Somalia was a disaster. An ambush in Mogadishu, in ______ , 1993 led to 18 U.S. troops being killed. A lasting image was that of dead American soldiers being dragged in the street. The incicent was later made into a film: "Black Hawk Down".

35.9.3 Total Destruction of the Federal Progressive Conservatives, 1993

At the beginning of this period, Canada's Prime Minister was Brian Mulroney (since the 33rd election on 4 September, 1984). The Progressive Conservative Party was firmly in control, with a parliamentary majority. But they were quickly loosing popularity. When Mulroney retired, Kim Campbell took over starting 13 June, 1993. In the 35th general election on 25 October, 1993, however, she and the Progressive Conservatives had lost terribly. They were reduced to only two Members of Parliament, loosing their party status. The Liberals under Jean Cretien were brought to power --and they would hold on to this power well into the 21st Century.

35.9.4 Rae-NDP Provincial "Social Contract", May, 1993

Rae was determined to keep the NDP promise to keep the deficit below $10 billion. To do this, Rae increased income and other tax increases, laid off 11,000 public sector workers, cut $ 54 billion in public expenses, and legislated a "Social Contract" (Bill 48 passed 7 July) which froze the salaries of 900,000 public sector employees for three year wage freeze and imposed an additional twelve days of "unpaid leave" each year ("Rae Days"). This "Social Contract" in Ontario was neither social nor a contract --and it was not voluntary. Voluntary negotiations had failed.

35.10 Culture, Books, Films, TV During This Period

35.10.1 Introduction

35.10.2 Music

I still liked Celtic music during this period, especially a new group "Great Big Sea" from Newfoundland. They perform energetic rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs including sea chanties, which draw from the island's 500-year-old Celtic, Irish, Scottish, and English traditions.

During this period, Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) died --apparently a suicide on 5 April, 1994.

35.10.3 Books Read

Amongst the books that I read during the period, the ones that in hindsight had a lasting impact on me were as follows:

35.10.3 Films Viewed

35.10.4 TV Viewed

Amongst the television programmes that I saw during the period, the ones that in hindsight had a lasting impact on me were as follows:
  • "Seinfeld" (see 35.10.5 below),
  • "",

35.10.5 "Seinfeld" (4 of 8)

"Seinfeld" deserves special attention because of its significant impact on my life, my teaching, and on society itself.

  • "Caravan"

35.11 Lillooet: I Came; I Sawed (Spring and Summer, 1993) (2 of 5)

35.11.1 Introduction

35.11.2 Spring, 1993

While teaching at TSS, the Spring of 1993 was dominated by preparations for the projects I planned to be carry out on our Lillooet dacha out West the coming summer of 1993.

35.11.2 Architectural Plans

35.11.3 Purchase of a Van

In April, 1973, I bought my large blue GMC van for $4,000.

35.11.4 Geography Honour Specialist Qualification Course

The Spring of 1993 I earned the Honour Specialist Additional Qualification for "Geography" by taking the EDU2090B course.

35.11.5 Trip West, July, 1993

As would become a annual event, Joanna and I drove out to Vancouver in the van.

35.11.6 Lillooet Dacha

35.11.7 Gliding

One of the things I liked doing out at Lillooet was gliding out of the virtually un-used airport between Pemberton and Mount Currie.

35.12 Slavophilism (2): Russian Art and Literature

35.12.1 Introduction

35.12.1 Slavophilism

After exploring my Slavophilism in Poland in the 1980s (see chapter 32), at this time expanded my interests to included Russian art, literature, and culture. Perhaps my attention had been focused by the tumultuous events of August, 1991, and the final collapse of the USSR in Dec. 1991 (see chapter 34).

While this interest was broad and varied, because Russian art, literature, and culture is indeed broad and varied, there are certain works which stand out. Some of these bear mention here.

35.12.2 Russian Art

One painting (see right) which stands out as having stimulated my interest in Russian art is a 1914 painting by Natan Altman (1889-1970) entitled "Portrait of Anna Akhmatova". Anna Akhmatova is a Russian poet.

35.13 My Art of the Period

35.13.1 Introduction

35.13.2 Manifesto, 19..

35.13.3 Painting

Initially, my art continued to be very urban and architecturally based.

Later in this period, my art was very much influenced by being out West at Lillooet.

35.13.4 Abstractions of Landscapes

At this time I was working with computers more and more. One of the series I created was a collection of abstracts resulting from digital manipulation.

35.13.5 The "Women as Landscape" Series

This is a series of paintings and modified photographs (see right) which were inspired by landscapes, the human form, and the idea of combining the two into a sort of fuzzy set between the two. Each work starts with a natural landscape and suggests a human form.
