35.15 Lillooet (3 of 5)

35.15.1 Introduction

35.15.2 Vancouver

Joanna and I would frequently go down highway 99 to Vancouver. We visited with friends Don and Maya and bought building supplies. Vancouver is located at 1,9 on the map below:

35.15.3 Lake Lillooet

On the map above, Lillooet is located just East (right) of the 7. The closest major town was Whistler, which is located at number 8. Whistler is on the world famously beautiful highway 99 (shown below) on the way to Vancouver.

On both the map above and below, the red line is highway 99.

Rather than being a problem, I took the fact that we were hundreds of miles from the closest electrical grid as an opportunity to play with alternatives.

35.16.2 Fall, 1993: My Third Semester at TSS

From the outset of my second year I knew it was going to be very different from my first year. I would be different: more acclimatized to the school, more confident; but more importantly the school would be different. This was because John Morton, who was the keele of this ship, was taking a year-long leave of absence. There was no principal in the school and his absence was sorely felt. This second year was also dominated two processes to do with board officials. The first was a program review and the second was the effort to acquire a new venue for the school.

Spring, 1994: Architecture Course One of the many positive aspects of teaching at TSS was that I had the freedom to create new courses. I designed and offered a course called "Architecture" and ran it during this fourth semester.

35.17 Redesign of Eastdale to Accommodate a New TSS

35.17.1 Introduction

35.17.2 Need for New Digs

At this time, THESTUDENTSCHOOL was negotiating with the Toronto District School Board (at that time called the "Toronto Board of Education") for a new venue. One option was that we would have an entirely new school, but this did not seem financially likely. We were therefore putting most of our effort into the idea of building on to the school that we were in, Eastdale C.I., to give us the space we required. These designs would become my architectural project #93_1.

35.18 Research and University Courses Taken, 1993-1994

35.18.1 Introduction

35.18.2 Environmental Science Specialist, Spring, 1993

As mentioned earlier, in the Spring of 1993 I completed the third of three additional qualification courses in teaching "Environmental Science" earning me what is called the "Specialist" qualification.

Geography Honour Specialist Qualification Course, Spring, 1993

The Spring of 1993 I also earned the Honour Specialist Additional Qualification for "Geography" by taking the EDU2090B course.

Visual Arts Honour Specialist, Spring, 1993

Since I wanted to teach primarily both Visual Arts and Geography, I decided to earn the highest qualifications in both of these fields. I already had the Honour Specialist in Geography, and in the Spring of 1993 I completed the additional qualification Honour Specialist course in Visual Arts.

History Qualification, Spring, 1994

In the Spring of 1994, I completed the History additional qualification course.

Ontario Workers' Arts and Heritage Centre, Srping, 1994

During the early 1990s I was researching and promoting the idea of my union (OSSTF) building a union hall which was much more that simple a meeting and office space. I patterned my approach on what I had seen in Eastern Europe, where union halls and Teachers' Houses were a venue for art shows, workshops, libraries, daily cultural and worker-related events. Because of this, I came in contact with people that were doing the ground work for the planned Ontario Workers' Arts and Heritage Centre. Ond of the groups doing the planning was "leisureplan International Inc". I consulted with them, and I think we learned much from each other. I was happy to have made some small contribution to something as worthwhile as the Ontario Workers' Arts and Heritage Centre, which opened in Hamilton, the next year, 1995.
