Longhope 1876
LONGHOPE is a parish in Westbury-on-Severn union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1104, and in 1871, 1088 inhabitants, and 2823 acres; in the northern division of the deanery of the Forest; archdeaconry of Gloucester, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, hundred of the Duchy of Lancaster, West Gloucestershire; 2 miles east from Mitcheldean, 6 north-east from Newnham, 8 south-east from Ross, and 9 west from Gloucester, on the Hereford and Ross branch of the Great Western Railway, which has a station here. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Frederick Charles Guise, M.A., is valued at 400 pounds per annum, with residence and about 20 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Mrs V. G. Guise. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to All Saints, principally Early English, consisting of nave, chancel, two transepts, south porch, and tower surmounted with pinnacles and containing five bells. The east window is of stained glass, by Clayton and Bell. The church was restored in 1870. The Baptists have a place of worship here. The poor have charitable bequests producing about 150 pounds per annum. Edward Probyn, Esq., D.L., J.P., is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The rateable value of this parish is £5,700.MAY HILL, which rises to a height of 973 feet above the level of the sea, is in this parish, and commands some magnificent views of the surrounding country.
