Abstract

Sacred lotus  (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn) ‘Boondarik’ is  the  cut  flower  that  its  demand is high in round of the year. However, sacred lotus has very short vase-life, only 3-5 days at ambient temperature (29-30˚C). This research studied effect of ethephon and 1-MCP, ethylene inhibitor, on vase-life and qualities of scred lotus stored at room temperature (29-30˚íC).  In the first experiment, we dipped lotus flower in 0, 100, 200, and 300 ppm ethyphon to investigate effect of ethylene on flower senescence.  The results  demonstrated  that  at  day 1, flower obtained 200 and  300  ppm  ethephon  increased  significantly water  uptake than  control and dramatically declined during vase-life. In the second experiment, we  dipped the lotus in 500 ppm ethephon before fumigating the  flower  with  0, 200, 400, 600, and  800  nLL-1 1-MCP.  The   flower was then stored at room temperature (29-30˚C).  The results demonstrated that at  day  3,  flower  that  obtained  600 nLL-1 had  significantly  less  weight  loss   than  control.  Fumigating  the  flower  with  600 nl/l  1-MCP  was  significantly  more  green  than  other  treatments. Therefore, it was concluded that ethylene increased water uptake whereas 600 nLL-1 1-MCP decreased weight loss and delayed green colour of the petal of lotus stored at  room temperature (29-30˚C) .
