Series of experiments were carried out to study
the effects of different levels of 16-16-8 fertilizer on rice and cowpea which
grown after rice. The effects of
residual fertilizer and cowpea green manure on the following season rice crop
were also compared.
First experiment: Three rates of 16-16-8
fertilizer (0, 10, and 20 kg/rai) were applied to rice variety RD6. The results showed no statistically
difference among treatments both on growth and yield. The highest yield of 254.89 kg/rai came from treatment,
which received 20 kg/rai. There
were also no differences among yield components of the three treatments.
Second experiment: The effects of residual
fertilizer from the first experiment on growth and yield of cowpea were
measured. A supplement of
fertilizer 3-9-6 kg/rai (N-P2O5-K2O) was added
to all treatments. There was no
difference in seed yield of cowpea among treatments. Soil analysis indicated that there were no residual effects
from N and K While there was some residual P found in the plot, which received
20 kg/rai of fertilizer.
Third experiment: This experiment was carried out to test effects of cowpea
green manure (incorporated 1 month before sowing rice) and chemical fertilizer
applied at the same rate as the previous experiment. There was no difference in yield and yield components except
number of grain per panicle. Plant
height and straw weight were also similar among treatments.
It
was concluded that this kind of study might have to be done on a long-term
basis.
