Chemical fertilizer is important in crop production.  However,

using chemical fertilizer without proper soil management for a long

period can damage soil structure which suitable for good crop production. 

Improving soil structure by using a large amount of organic fertilizers

such as compost, cow manure may not be appropriate for small cropping

farmers.  Green manuring, by growing a legume crop or green manure

crop and then plough or incorporate it under the soil to improve the soil,

may be a solution.  Most of articles in this issue involve green manuring

for improving soil condition and crop yield. 

 

Crop residue incorporation into the soil by a rather big or heavy

machine as has been done in developed countries may decrease the

mentioned problem, but the farmers in developing countries may not be

able to afford.  Most subsistence farmers also have to pay for hired ploughing

before planting crop.  Therefore, at present farmers are using many ways

including a combination of chemical and organic fertilizers to improve

their crop production.  Full details of each article can be obtained from
