On an experimental space mission testing the possibility of using a planet's own gravity to increase a ship's speed to escape the planet's gravitational pull astronaut John Crichton came too close to an eclipsing star and opened a wormhole. Falling through the wormhole he was accidentally flung across the universe into the midst of an intergalactic conflict. Lost, he finds haven aboard a living ship with alien creatures wielding deadly technology, each on the run and searching for home.
