We flew into Orange County airport from Chicago on Friday night to visit Jane’s parents. After getting to Jane’s parents house, Derrick snuck out to the highest point in the area, a hill only a few blocks away. Jane’s brother Nathan had helped suggest the private location with no homes or lights and a view of Orange County overlooking the ocean. Jane’s parents were also in on the proposal and had secretly placed bags of flowers, candles, and lighters outside their home. Derrick set out red and pink roses and white vanilla scented votive candles at the top of the hill along a small cliff. Jane’s parents meanwhile distracted Jane with some strawberries. All week Derrick had been talking about taking a walk up the hills so Jane would go along with it (it’s a steep hill, it took some convincing!) Derrick lit the two dozen candles (hoping not to start the largest fire in OC history) and ran back to ask Jane on a walk. About three-fourths up the hill, Jane stopped to catch her breath, but just a few steps further she saw lights and started asking “what’s this???” Derrick handed her a bunch of red roses. Soon Jane was crying and Derrick was giving a speech about how much he loved her and wanted to be with her forever. Then he went on one knee and asked Jane to marry him with a diamond solitaire. “Yes!”
