Maggie Q and Fann Wong to headline S'pore-Germany production
IT WILL be a harmonious mix of local and foreign in the upcoming TV movie, House of Harmony, which involves production houses from Singapore and Germany, as well as MediaCorp artiste Fann Wong and Hong Kong actress Maggie Q.
House of Harmony is a $7-million co- production between Singapore's Oak3 Films and Germany's FFP Media, and with the involvement of the Media Development Authority.
German actors Phillipe Brenninkmeyer, Daniel Morgenroth and supporting actors from Singapore, such as Zhu Houren and Amy Cheng, round off the rest of the cast.
The script is adapted from a period novel of the same title by American writer Barbara Wood.
The two-part romance drama will begin filming this Sunday in 40 locations around Singapore, including the Raffles Hotel and sets of old Chinatown recreated at Tang Dynasty Village.
Shot on 16mm film, it will be broadcast on German television in the third quarter of next year. While there is no confirmed date for the show's broadcast in Singapore, there are plans for it to screen here by the end of next year.
In the drama, Fann Wong plays a Chinese woman in the 1920s who begins a forbidden love affair with an American man. But on the day of their planned elopement, she finds out that her lover has already left. She is pregnant and has only a letter to remember him by.
Maggie Q plays their daughter, who grows up in the 1950s and tries not to repeat the same mistakes in love that her mother had made.
At the press conference held at the Raffles Hotel Long Bar, Maggie ?resplendent in a red cheongsam ?said: "My character's background is similar to what I grew up with in terms of being influenced by my mother and my Asian side."But my Asian-Caucasian background is different from my character's," pointed out Maggie, who is of American-Vietnamese parentage and grew up in Hawaii.
Although Fann plays Maggie's mother, she will not have to be aged with make-up wizardry.
The actresses only have one scene together - when mother attends daughter's graduation ceremony.
"I tried on the make-up (which will age her) a couple of weeks ago, but the director was not comfortable with how I looked," said Fann.
"So, we're going to try again with Maggie by my side. I don't like putting on aged make up.
"I felt like i was 80 that day even though I'm only supposed to look 40!"
