Fann in Vietnam

Thu Minh
Singaporean singer and actress Fann Wong, famous for her role in Jackie Chan's Hollywood blockbuster Shanghai Knights, will sing for the first time in Vietnam on Friday at Ho Chi Minh City's Nguyen Du Club.

Wong will perform songs in English from her most popular album I Want You, released in 2000, which won the hearts of millions of fans in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. She now has more than 10 albums with more than a million copies sold. Fann Wong and opening act Thu Minh will also collaborate for two Vietnamese songs, Nho Anh (Miss You) and Anh Sang Doi Toi (My Life's Light), which were written by pop songwriters Ky Phuong and Minh Chau.

Born in 1971, Fann Wong began working as a professional fashion model when she was 17, and started her screen career in 1993, when she acted in the TV series Dreams Come True.

Six years later, Wong received the Prize for the Most Talented Young Actor for her role in the movie The Truth About Jane and Same by Hong Kong director Er Dongsheng.

Fann Wong also won Best Singapore Actress in 1995 and in 2000, earning the reputation as one of the ten most popular performers in Asia.

In 2001, Fann Wong was invited to play a leading role in Shanghai Knights, the sequel to Jackie Chan's Shanghai Noon. Her appearance was received well by both Asian and American fans. "I'm very fond of Fann Wong. Her performing and acting skills are so fresh. I am excited to work with her," said Thu Minh, winner of the HCM City Television Singing Contest in 1993.

Thu Minh is a pop singer from HCM City with 10 years of experience in music. Minh can sing both traditional and modern tunes, infusing her music with strong passions and rhythms.

During her opening act, Minh will sing a selection of traditional and pop songs, including Bong Cay Konia (Shade of Konia Tree), Tinh Ca Cho Em (A Love Song for You) and Uoc Mo (Dream), which was written by popular composers Phan Huynh Dieu, Hong Kien and Nguyen Nam.

"Maybe people think I am taking a risk by performing alongside Fann Wong, a beauty queen and a star in Singapore. But I think not. I believe in my ability and I think music will bring us together," said Minh.

"Fann Wong will learn something about Vietnam's contemporary music through our show, during my performance in particular," she added.

Sponsored by Kotex Company, the event will be broadcast on six stations in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, HCM City and Can Tho.

The show will take place at 8pm on Friday, at the Nguyen Du Club, 143-145 Nguyen Du Street, District 1. Tickets, ranging from VND70,000 (US$4) to VND150,000 (US$10) each, are available at the Nguyen Du Club and Cat Tien Sa Advertising Company at 5B Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street in District 1.
