NKF to hold third show on Wednesday

FOR the first time in 11 years, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) will hold a third show in its annual fundraiser over television.

It will be shown live on Wednesday on Channel 8, from 8pm to 9pm, and will feature veteran Taiwanese artistes such as Wen Zhang and Hu Chin.

The surprise announcement was made last night at the end of the second show which raised $6.4 million.

An NKF spokesman said the extra show was 'to coincide with the closing of the donation lines' at 9pm on Wednesday.

Last night's donations came from about 1.22 million phone calls and SMSes. It brought the total raised to $13.1 million - $6.7 million was raised the week before.

Last year, the two live telecasts raised $13.3 million.

Of last night's amount, NFK's deputy director for communications, Ms Michelle Ang, said: 'It's a little lower. I think there's a reason: The show is shorter by 20 minutes compared to last week's.' Whatever the reason, 'the figures are still good,' she said of the $13.1 million raised altogether.

The top draw last night was actress Zoe Tay, who ran the risk of cutting her hand in an item that tested her memory skills. Her stunt drew about 158,000 calls.

Actor Tay Ping Hui had to lay on a bed of 7,200 nails and bear a combined weight of 300kg - actress Michelle Chong and three stone slabs - on his chest. His stunt got about 130,000 calls.

Actress Fann Wong did a stunt similar to what she did last year when she walked on a tight-rope four storeys above ground at Bishan Junction 8 while carrying a 15kg pole. With actor Qi Yuwu, she drew about 92,000 calls.

Stunts aside, there was also a performance by Taiwanese boy band 5566.
