April
20th.
The telephone on
Darien’s desk protested, startling him.
"Good morning."
"Hello Darien."
Andrew laughed as he got online.
"How’s everything
so far?" He sat back and tried to relaxed his tensed
nerves.
"Very
impressive. The conference room was
decorated just to suit her pleasure.
I suppose you are all worked up to impress her?"
"10 a.m." Darien
murmured a time.
"That’s
right. Get ready and on the battle
field we go." Andrew tried to reassure his employee.
"Alright
then. See you in the conference
room in-in 30 minutes." Darien took a glance at his watch and leaned forward to
pick up a pencil.
"No problem." His
boss hang up.
"Bye." Hearing the click of Andrew’s telephone,
Darien closed his eyes. He’d been
waiting for this day for years. It
was almost like his long cherished dream to meet Serena Murphy face to
face. Now, that day had finally
arrived.
*********
10
a.m.
Serena Murphy and
Jennifer got off the limousine and greeted by a bunch of already-waiting
reporters. Serena instantly
frowned. She hated the
press.
"Miss Murphy,
what’s your opinion about working for Johnson’sFashion?" A man rushed forward to
ask a question.
"What that
because Andrew Johnson agreed to pay you more than any of you clients? Was money your true purpose this time?"
A middle-aged woman followed the model’s hurrying form.
"have you any
faith in Mr. Johnson’s designers?"
"Plenty." Serena
finally answered one of them, slightly annoyed.
"Miss
Murphy-"
"Miss
Murphy-"
"Miss
Murphy-"
They didn’t just
let her go, questions hurled at Serena and her assistance like a violent
tornado. Serena and Jennifer reached Johnson’s headquarter and quickly
disappeared into the elevator.
*********
"Good Morning
Miss Murphy." Lucy stood up instantly when she spotted the famous woman in the
reception area. Smiling, she led
their way, "Please this way." Nodding politely toward Jen as well, she opened
the door to the conference room.
Darien Calt
looked up the instant when Serena entered.
She was beautiful. Perhaps
she possessed certain elegance which made her distinct from other starlets and
famous models. Serena was
graced by a neat, long sleeves navy outfit. In a way, she even looked like a
powerful and authoritative CEO, rather than the woman who worried about every
molecule in her food. Her shining
gold hair were nicely secured by a navy silk scarf, with a few loose tendrils to
soften the effect. Her make-up
looked natural and unflattering.
Serena also wore an expansive pearl pedant at her throat with matching
pearl earrings. Her eyes were most
impressive. Bright, sky blue full
of wisdom, though they were cold and hard.
In a ways, Darien had awkwardly thought she’d look wonderful if she had
some mirth or laughter in those amazing blue orbs.
"Miss Murphy,
this is Mr. Johnson. And this is his designer Darien Calt." Lucy introduced
everyone was Serena shook hands with them.
Her eyes landed on the designer then. It was a youthful and startling handsome
face. Darien Calt wore a navy suit
a color almost matching Serena’s.
He was incredibly tall and very well built. The most notably feature were his
amazing midnight dark hair which were nicely cut and carefully styled. His eyes were deep ocean blue full of
depth, there was a certain demanding manner radiating through the man which made
him mysterious and hidden. Serena
was impressed slightly.
Everyone sat down
around the rosewood table with a copy of the contract in front of them. Serena quietly turned to the first page
and started her reading and Andrew Johnson and Darien Calt sat back and observed
her.
**********
Andrew picked up
a fountain pen Lucy gave to him and signed his name on the paper. Darien followed suit and signed
his. Serena chose a gold pen and
signed hers.
The deal was
sealed and Serena Murphy was Johnson’s official model.
**********
"Hello. Who is it?" Serena yawned sleepily into the
phone. She blinked and tried to
focus on her radio clock. 8:42
a.m. She frowned, slightly annoyed
by the fact someone had bothered her sleep at such an early Saturday
morning.
"Serena. Wake
up." Lita’s voice closed the distance between them.
"Morning
Lita. What made you call me so
early today?" Serena was relieved and sink deeper into her sea of
sheets.
"Early? Not TOO early. It’s nearly 9:00."
"8:43." Serena
corrected her best friend, noting the digit also increased by
one.
"Still, get up
sleepy head." Lita had not forgot
to tease her.
"what’s up?"
Serena shook her head, feeling slightly dizzy.
"You’ve forgot to
call me since that day we had lunch and you dare ask me ‘what’s up’?" Lita
scolded her friend, but laughed to show Serena she was only
joking.
"I am sorry,
Lita." Serena closed her eyes, smiling.
"Apology
accepted."
"Where are you
now?"
"My
office."
"Today is
Saturday!"
"I know. But Ken and I are going to get married
in future months. I am planing on
some ‘engagement vacation’. I am
also working on an outline for the Dallas project, that’s why I am in my office
right now."
"Oh." Serena
nodded. "you are going to ask me to
be your bride maid right?"
"Hmm..."
"What do you mean
‘Hmm...’?"
"Because I
already decided to let you be my bride maid ever since we were little kids."
Lita told her seriously.
"Lita..." Serena
was touched.
"Anyway," The
architect tried to change the topic. "I saw on the newspaper yesterday that you
newly started up a contract with Johnson’s fashion, am I
correct?"
"Yes."
"Why didn’t you
tell me so when we had lunch?"
"I hadn’t decide
on it that day. At the same time, I
prefer not to talk about my career when I am with you."
"That’s quite
alright Serena. Though I'd rather you told me yourself than having me found out
about it on the news." Lita tried to reassure her.
"Did you set a
day?" Serena suddenly picked up the topic of Lita’s
wedding.
"What
day?"
"Wedding."
"Not yet. I have
to discuss this with Ken first." Lita told her, "When are you going to be
married?"
"Don’t tease
me. I am NOT going to get married."
Serena laughed.
"I am
serious."
"I am serious as
well."
"Really Serena,
you deserve the best in this world.
You just can’t imagine it, how much wonder life possesses. Be happy Serena, you worked for
it."
Serena could hear
Lita’s voice wavering with emotion and realized Lita was truly serious about the
matter. But before she could say
anything to tell Lita that she loved the way her life led and she didn’t feel
alone, Lita hang up. The dead dial
tone came back into Serena’s empty mind.
"I envy you,
Lita..." She whispered.
*********
Somewhere not
really too far away from Serena Murphy’s apartment, a young man with the most
startling black hair and handsome face sat dreamily with a copy of yesterday’s
news. He was reading the article
about Serena Murphy and Johnson’s contract, including Andrew Johnson’s opinion
about the fashion show.
Darien remembered
her heart-warming smiles. Yet he
was also aware of the fact that she was really smiling at all. That was merely a pasted artificial
happy face. That made him wonder
about her personal life and her past.
Above all, Darien
Calt was excited. He was determined
not to fail his friend who had put so much trust in him and vowed to work to the
top. He will show the world that
he, too could be a winner with such talent he possessed. He already got certain ideas of the
designs in mind. Meeting with
Serena in real life had made him change a few of them. Basically, they will be most suited to
her beauty and grace.
*Now Darien, hold
on tight and on the battle fields you go...*
