"Mr. Calt? Mr. Johnson wishes to speak with
you."
Darien completed
the last line of his design, throwing aside his HB pencil, and smiled up at
Andrew's personal secretary.
"Yes, Lucy. What is it?"
"Mr. Johnson
wishes to speak with your right now, I shall escort you to the conference room."
She smiled with a teasing wink.
"All right, let's
see what Andrew's got me today..." Darien lazily got up from his desk and
followed Lucy out of his office.
"Hey
Darien." Andrew turned around on
his black leather office chair from inside the room. Brushing aside a few blond bangs of his,
he greeted his best friend. Andrew was dressed in a gray business suit with a
dark navy tie pulled loosely from his neck, and the top button of his white
shirt was open, due to the warm condition in the conference room after an early
meeting. His blond bangs naturally
covered his broad forehead, reflecting the morning sunlight that filtered
through the huge office windows in the largest room of his company. He was holding a black ink pen
carelessly between his thumb and index finger, rolling it back and forth as if
he was in the middle of a very important decision. Andrew's blue eyes were
staring straight at the man who is also his college best friend.
"Morning, Mr.
Johnson. What's up?" Darien called
him by this last name, even though he knew fully well that Andrew preferred to
be called his friend; like first name.
"Andrew, please."
Andrew smiled while correcting his employee.
"I was wondering,
what made you change from calling me Andrew during our 4 years of college study,
to such a dramatic turn into Mr. Johnson, when we're still friends plus
partner?"
Darien shrugged
his broad shoulder, a mischievous smile shining in between his blue pupils.
"Now sit down, I
have some important matter to discuss with you." Andrew held out his right palm,
indicating the chair in front of his desk.
His desk was rather very large; flat, shining red wood. To the left of his elbow, a laptop laid
open. Apparently, he was typing
something in it before Darien had entered.
A convenient desk lamp located at the center part of his table and a tray
made of brass contained all the documents to be viewed, was thrown to his
left. Few piles of paper work
arranged randomly on the smooth surface of the wood with a couple pens and
highlighters messily on them.
"You wish to tell
me something?" Darien asked while sitting down, examining the empty conference
room and then back at his friend.
To him, Andrew was more than an ordinary boss, he was also his best
friend, a person who understood him and treated him with respect.
"Um...I think you
probably aware that within a year, the most grand and exciting fashion show is
to be held in Paris. February of
next year, 10 months from now. Many
other companies like us and hundreds of designers like you are desperately
grasping this opportunity to show the world of their talent. Of course, in my opinion, you're the
most talented of them all. To make
use of this chance, first we need to advertise our company and design; then we
need a famous model to represent our team during the show, and of course we need
your fabulous design. Although advertisement is not a matter to worry about
right now. As the representative
designer, I have thought about it for the past two weeks and finally came to a
decision that you are the one. The
model, if we want to achieve our goal, we need someone famous and well
known. I guess you already know who
I am talking about here..."
"Serena Murphy."
Darien finished his friend's unfinished sentence.
"4 million
dollars or more, no matter how much it takes we need Serena Murphy. I know it may be too expansive for us,
but the effect will be well worth it.
For the most recent information I have, Hillary Fashion was willing to
pay her 3.5 million. I don't really
care, I put down 4 million. You
know her, living for money only, I trust she would work for the company who pays
her the most. Who wouldn't
anyway... so now that's settled.
Now, I need to confirm this is with Miss Murphy's personal assistance, I
believe we could schedule a meeting with her on the 20th of April. I only hope that proud, newly raised
star would kindly accept our offer."
Andrew appeared to be thoughtful.
After a few
minutes he started again. "Now we come to the conclusion. I want you to do the
designs for Serena Murphy, of course, you will meet her face to face when the
contract is signed. Darien Calt,
you have 10 months now until the night of our show, I trust your taste and
talent, our future and this opportunity is now depending on you. Grasp this chance and go for it, I
strongly believe in you."
Darien stood up,
shaking hands with Andrew with all his might, appreciation, trusting were all
his emotions at that moment. He was
touched, Andrew Johnson trusts him, and he's willing to rely on him to do such a
meaningful job.
Andrew got up
from his chair, walking around the huge office desk, he began once more.
"Another warning, we all know very well what kind of person Serena Murphy is and
how she loves money, I was also aware that this is your first time meeting
her. Be calm, don't' worry, and
never let her get you. Just put
your judgment and talent into what you are doing and I truly wish you luck and
success." Andrew placed his hand on
Darien's shoulder, squeezing it mightily, putting all his hope and trust into
his best friend.
"Thanks
Andrew. I won't disappoint
you."
"You may leave
now, don't forget. When the
contract is signed, I will inform you of the meeting."
Darien got up and
retreated back to his own office.
Darien now sat
excitedly on his couch in the little living room of his apartment. *Finally, I can meet Serena Murphy
personally. I wonder what kind of
person she is. Proud of course,
arrogant, and money lover, just like the newspapers had said. Women... I bet she wouldn't care about
who's really her designer, all she's concerned about is that check she's getting
and the number of digits on it.
Silly, money could buy everything?
Even happiness?!* Darien had
came home earlier that day, retired from his whole day of work and settled
safely into the embrace of his cozy apartment. He was so excited, to meet Serena Murphy
must have been one of his greatest dreams.
Of course, thanks to Andrew who made this all came to reality. Yes, he had offered himself a lot of
trust and respect.
Darien knew
Andrew did this partially for him too, if the show goes on successfully, then
they would be famous. The designer
who won the award in the modern Paris Fashion Festival, the designer of Serena
Murphy. He's ready, ready to battle
any kind of challenge and hardship.
Darien vowed he'd show all this talents and to fulfill his dreams ever
from childhood. No he will never
let Andrew down, he wouldn't be disappointed. The whole world shall know that he, he
could be a winner, he could climb up to the peak of success. As for his partner, Darien was very well
satisfied. This would be the first
time of his meeting with Serena Murphy, he'd impress her, with his talented
design amongst materials of silk and satin. April 20th, 15 more days from now, he
will see the person he has been waiting for years to face. Isn't this the day he
forever dreamed of? Yet, despising all the magazine articles about Serena
Murphy, Darien learned very well about her life and character. But still, he still doubted over the
famous yet mysterious woman, is she really what they said she is? Or is he just another one who's blinding
over the lies of media? Darien
snapped back from his exciting imagination and backed himself to reality when
his cat Luna jumped on his lap.
Luna was an
ordinary black cat, cute and very obedient. "Meow, meow", a small voice purred, her
eyes half closed. Luna laid on
Darien's lap, nagging her back towards his palm, wanting some caress and
attention from her dear master.
Darien smiled, now giving Luna his full attention by running his fingers
through her smooth black fur. He
talked to himself, "Today is Wednesday, two more days of working. I will get some idea about the dress and
announce this good news to mother.
Oh mother, I should buy her a cake beforehand. Saturday is her birthday. She's 52 now, how time flies, another
year just passed me by..."
