“Good night, darling.” Darien kissed Beryl good-bye and closed the door on her side of his limousine.

Beryl Merlin blew him a kiss and waved her hand.

Watching the car gliding off the gravel driveway of his estate, Darien Fielding smiled like a teenage boy fallen in love, his heart filled with indescribable tenderness.

Behind him, the night was oppressive and ominous with inky darkness.

With keys jingling in her palm, Beryl entered her downtown flat with a wicked grin.  She stepped in, saw the tall, handsome male waiting for her in the dark, then her smile deepened. She walked up to him, encircled her snake-like arms around his waist from behind.

“Were you waiting for me?” She brushed her lips against his clothed back.

“How was Fielding?”  He turned around, walking out of her arms rudely.  Under the dimly visible moonlight that had filtered through the windows, his handsome brow came in a tensed knot.

      “Totally in love.”

“You? Or him?” Malachite Carlton folded his arms across his chest and leaned against a pillar with cold disinterest.

“Both of us.” Beryl smiled sensually, walking to the bar and poured herself a glass of sherry. “How about some sherry?”

He ignored her offer and continued to frown. “Both of you?”

Beryl sighed with false dismay.  “He’s in love with me, but I’m in love with-” she paused for a second, “you.”

Malachite remained expressionless for a while.

“Can I possibly interpret your reaction as some sort of-huh-jealousy?”

      “Believe whatever you wish.”

Beryl gave a throaty little laugh.  “But I only love you, you know that, don’t you, darling?”

“What’s the story about Fielding and Global Inc.?”

      “Gregory Laurence and his sister?”

Malachite nodded curtly. “You know what I meant.”

“Darien Fielding is looking forward for some friendly partnership with Global, he also wants some of their annual investments.  Good trading protocol, you know.”

      “And?”

“If he wants them, he must please the Laurence brother and sister. Some bad news for you, Gregory Laurence seemed to be extremely happy with Fielding.  Consequently, you must first knock Darien out of the game before you receive your piece of goodies from Global.”

Malachite laughed. “I am not stupid enough to have you pointing that out.”

“True.  You’re not stupid, that’s why you have me.” Beryl took a sip of her drink and toyed with the long-stemmed glassware. “Global now has two potential partners.  It’s either Darien Fielding, or you.”

“You’re suggesting that I get him out of the picture?”

      “Naturally.”

      Malachite nodded.

“You can bankrupt Fielding.  Take it over, if you wish.  Luck is now on your side of the game, Malachite, because Darien has confided something grievously important to me tonight.  That alone is convincing enough to make you sue him for potential bribery.”

“Let’s suppose I will do exactly that?”

“Then collect his stocks. Fielding’s Sintrade.Inc stocks are everywhere on the market.  Suppose you don’t immediately take him to court, but starting to collect the shares under private, small companies.”

      “Take it over?”

Beryl smiled more, looking like a shift businesswoman rather than her role as a glamorous model. “That’s your intention, but now it will cost you far less.  Because until today, Sintrade’s stocks are soaring up the ceiling; tomorrow, it will head in the opposite direction.”

      “Why so confident?”

“Because,” Beryl looked at him right in the eye, her red lips curled into a tight smile, “you can now use your influence to convince the FBI that Fielding is involved in oversea illegal trading.”

      Malachite lifted a handsome brow.

“That won’t bankrupt him, but public scandal will bury him. Then you can easily send him to court and take over Sintrade with ease.”

Malachite laughed cruelly. “Darien Fielding, you will never know what had hit you.”

Dragging his body, which was filled with fatigue and exhaustion, Darien stepped into his shiny gold Jaguar.  He slammed on the accelerator forcibly, and then the car shot onto the busy highways with amazing speed.

The wind toyed with his short black hair harshly and blew some strands into his eyes.  His eyes filled with undiluted loathing for himself and hurt due to betrayal.  He was crazy with regret and hatred now, and he wouldn’t have cared if the Jag delivers him straight into the hands of death.

Still conscious of the alcohol he gulped down, Beryl Merlin’s sensual red lips smiled wickedly at him, mocking him of his naiveté. Never had Darien hated himself more than he does now.  He actually cared, and loved that fair-faced bitch!

He had lost.  He lost the love he gave Beryl, the trading company he established, his reputation and his fiancee.

He had lost so much more in this ill-fated game.  He was the biggest loser.

      “Bitch.” He cursed.  “Bitch!”

“It is also reported today that a FBI team has obtained a search permit to investigate industrialist Darien Fielding’s trading ships to South America, due to suspected trading of drugs and illegal artilleries.  Mr. Fielding is now working in his Seattle headquarter, and his board haven’t yet spoken to the media concerning this issue.” The news broadcaster paused, “now switching to entertainment news and our national weather broadcast…”

Serena turned off the TV and looked at Amy. “It’s Beryl, isn’t it?”

“The worst is behind, Sere.” Amy hesitated for a moment, “Malachite Carlton is spreading the rumors of suing Sintrade for bribery.”

“Bribery?” Serena looked stunned.  “You can’t mean Global.  Darien and Greg are simply friends looking forward for some nice partnership!”

Amy sighed helplessly. “But that doesn’t stop Carlton from taking Sintrade to court.”

      “It will be disastrous.”

“Probably worse than that.  Did you look at Wall Street stock market report today? That was even more destructive.” Amy reminded Serena of Sintrade stocks’ sudden drop of twenty points in a single day. “It has never been this bad.”

“Poor Darien, he can’t even walk near any TV, radio, even newspapers, without getting bombarded with these.” Serena whispered, her voice filled with sympathy.

“Your ex-fiance had avoided any public appearance in front of the reporters, assuming he’s hiding at home to discuss the battle plan.  Which reminds me,” Amy got up and walked over to her desk. “Sintrade hired two law firms to handle their affair, and we are one of them.”

Serena Lamperd looked at the documents Amy thrust to her.  It has been almost half a year since her broken engagement with Darien.  Her wound had slowly healed, but whatever reminder of her ex-fiancé was a sharp stab on her heart. Recently, she was terrified by the possibility that she couldn’t get over him!

She accepted the paper with a fierce promise in her heart: He was a part of her past, and he had never loved her. She must forget about Darien Fielding.  And the best way to put the hurt behind her is to confront it.
