"Hail
and well met traveler! I know not how you came to be here, but I see you are
confused. Please, have a seat...
"You're not from around here. I mean this world. I
can see it in your eyes. Hrmmm.... Perhaps a visitor from the past? You know
where you are but know not how things came to be as they are? Hrmmm... yes...
well, if any of us here on this world knew, we would know a lot, now, wouldn't
we?
"Let me tell you what I do know...
"Thousands of years ago, a great cataclysm affected
the world. Some suspect it was a great war with terrible power wielded by
both sides. Much of the known world was laid to waste. During this conflict,
a great man arose whose name is lost to legend, known only as The Great Sage.
He promised a land of prosperity for those who would follow him to a new land.
Many did. He came to these lands and worked great magic. He created a barrier
over the lands that would keep out the influence of other magics and peoples.
Next, he returned the lands to a fertile state, cleansing away the barren
wastelands. And finally, he erected the Barrier Mountains to the east that
separate us from the Blasted Lands and the Sea of Glass. Mutants and other
foul creatures live in the mountains and beyond.
"The mountains are all but impassable, but there are
several passes through the mountains that were placed there by the Great Sage.
Explorers frequently go through to seek out ruins of ancient civilization.
Sometimes, when most heinous crimes are committed, they send someone through
the pass in exile.
"But I digress. After the Sage had finished his work,
he died. The effort was too much for him. He left the lands he created to
be governed by men as they saw fit, trusting them to do the right thing. The
Council of Sages was created as an objective lawmaking body that all lands
would owe fealty to. It was made up of men who were descended from the Great
Sage.
"However, men being the greedy lot that they are, all
is not peaceful in the world. War seems to be at every corner and the Council
is made up of petty politicians whose descendency from the Great Sage is doubtful.
Isn't this what the people who originally came here were running from? Bah...
the men of any race always seem content to want to kill each other and gain
power. Such is life. There are some who believe the Sage will return to us,
to once again lead us out of ruin.
"I suppose the only way for you to learn about this
is to experience it first hand. Take care stranger. I suppose you will see
much that isn't to your liking..."
The Lost World is a campaign setting for 3e Dungeons and Dragons. It is still in its infancy as it is only now being realized. As the campaigns develop, the information here will be updated. Hopefully on a semi-regular basis.
So you're probably wondering... Everyone has their own campaign on the web, what makes this one so special?
Let me try to answer that. First off, it's a familiar world. It's our world. Earth. But far in the future after a great cataclysm that threw humanity back technologically. It also saw the appearance of many other races. Relics from "The Time Before" still survive and many still work. Secondly, I would hope to involve some people in the creation of this campaign world.
I'm trying to create the map, but it's coming along slowly. Here's as it stands so far:
The biggest chore in creating this world is the amount of research that must be done. I wish to make this world as close to the Earth we know as possible. This means looking into weather conditions for countries, as well as geological makeup and natural resources. It would be silly to base a kingdom of dwarves where no gold, ore or gems are to be found. I will be starting in Shellona as the major "good" country, with Brosenia being the major "evil" country. Shellona sits on land that is modern day Ukraine and southern Russia.
Following is a list of countries and their pronunciation. As information on a country becomes available, the name will be linked to the country's page. Hopefully I will eventually be able to produce maps of the countries with accurate information on mountain ranges and forests, etc.
Countries of the Lost World:
Archerdale
(ARE-chur-dale)
Avernus (A-ver-nuss: A- as in the word apple)
Borea (BORE-e-ah)
Brosenia (bro-SEE-knee-uh)
Dinland, East and West (DIN-lund)
Erenia (eh-REN-e-ah)
Gaul (GOLL)
Gothland (GOTH-land)
Grenicia (gren-E-see-uh)
Inkliss (EEN-kliss)
Jotenheim (YO-ten-hime: -hime rhymes with time)
Northland
Palmania (PAUL-may-knee-uh)
Romanya (ro-MAH-nya)
Shellona (shell-O-nuh)
Stoneheim
Sultistan (SOOL-ti-stahn)
Valencia (vuh-LEN-see-ah)
Zandia (ZAN-dee-uh)
And finally a listing of the Gods of the Lost World will be available. Not much is known of the Gods yet, but it will be updated when new information is uncovered.
