AUSTRIA

Maybe you were reading the reviews of the year 2001. There's the album Zero of this band. Steff answered the following interview for Eternal Night.

Hello Steff, how were the first ten years of the band?

I just can say, that since all the years Mastic Scum exists, the band turned into a big part of our lives. Not only our sound changed, also our way of live. We`re looking forward to spend most time and energy into music and free thinking generally.

What's the actual line up?

We had just one line-up change in our bandhistory. Our current line-up is the same since 1994: Harry - guitar, Steff - bass, Man - drums, Will - vocals

Where the Mastic Scum's roots came?

We`re mostly influenced by old Hardcore, Grind or Punkbands like the Dead Kennedys, old Napalm Death, Terrorizer and much more...

How has been the support outside your country?

There are many labels, zines, distributors around the world where we got big support from since all the years the band exists. There are so much people who work in and for the underground scene worldwide, so I just can say thanks to all these people for helping bands get more popular. Also the reactions of the audience is always great when we play gigs in other countries. Gigs are very important for us - you can see the "real face" of the band when you see them live!!!

How do you describe the actual Austria metal escene?

The scene over here is quite good, but it`s mostly restricted to the bigger cities like Vienna, Graz or so.
Also there are some good bands over here and also the old "pioneers" are re-unioned now (Pungent Stench, Disharmonic Orchestra, ...)

Which have been the last gigs?

We are just back from our "TORTOUR 2002" where we played some gigs in germany and the netherlands. It went really fucking great, but also with some troubles ... like on every tour!
Our shouter "Will" get hurt on his right leg and he had to visit the hospital after the first show. DEEP SHIT!!! But we didn`t throw up the sponge.
"Will" left the fuckin`hospital after one night, he got 2 nice crutches and he was keepin` on grinding...
Thanx and greetings to all bands we met on stage and everyone who supported us. Also greetings to all who visited our shows, bought our merchandise and all freaks we met on this tour. See you next time...

Is there a particular band in your country that you admire?

There is a band called MASTIC SCUM ha,ha,ha!!!

For you which are the differences of metal between America and Europe?

We know not so many actual bands from the american underground scene over here. Here in europe we`re always around in other countries to play gigs and there you meet so many other people and bands. Also the scenes are quite different between the countries.
I cannot say you differences between america and europe underground metal, because the bands are quite different from each other. It doesn`t belong to the states they`re from.

Do you see close the day to play in this stages?

Of course we want to play shows in america, but it`s not so easy to realize. It`s so much work to organize the flight, gigs, ... you`d need a van to drive around - this is quite expensive when you have to finance all this stuff yourselve. But we`re looking forward to realize this !!!

How do you imagine to Colombia?

When you`re looking TV you always see the bad things of life in other countries. You combinate drugs and civil war, the big difference between poor and rich people. But you don`t see the good things in your country. Because you don`t get any information about it...
I think you have the same problem about other countries - or what do you think about austria??

A massage to the Mastic Scum fans?

Thanks a lot for the inti and support through your zine! We`ll bring out a new split 7"EP with Rotten Sound in June this year and we hope that our new CD will be released in the next months. Everything is ready, we`ve just to find a label.
