ITALY
Eternal Night wants to present this italian band, which is a true
promissing for the underground there. Just let the time takes his course
and soon we'll see the development. For the moment read this, one of
the first interviews for an american zine
How was the first year of the band?
Well, in September 2000 our monicker was My Dark Side, born by the
fusion of two bands, Mourningstar and Haternal. The first was composed
by Sara, Alberto, Dam and two other guys and we were influenced by
some gothic metal bands like Moonspell. Haternal was another project by
Alberto and Dam (with Ilario/bass and Davide/synths) and they essentially
played black/death symphonic metal (Edge of Sanity, Dimmu Borgir...) But
Albo and Dam didn't bear the studies and the two projects at the same
time so we decided to mix up the musical elements of H. and M. creating
one band: My Dark Side. From September 2000 to September we
started composing part of the material you can find in our first
mcd "Entwined Emotions" and we played some gigs but that was a
particular period for the band. That was a sort of embryonal phase.
In that months Lifend's germ began to grow up... so we changed monicker,
bass-player and even in our nowadays musical proposal you can find
some differences.
Why did you change the name My Dark Side?
To underline our new musical attitude (the songs you can listen to on
"Entwined Emotions" are quite different from our new songs) and the
coming in of our new bass-player Roberto (brutal/grind background) we
changed monicker in Lifend; something more direct and dinamic at the
same time exactly in the way our music has developped; from a sort of
influenced gothic metal to a more aggressive swedish death/gothic metal
with keyboards and synths parts.
How is the italian scene actually?
It's strange and funny here in Italy; there are lots of interesting and cool
bands here in Italy above all in the underground that aren't considered by
the labels or judged bad just because Italian. A band has to work hard and
hard to become a little famous or to rise from the underground and, listen
to me, it's not simple. In Italy just if you have a lot of contacts you are
able to increase your "status", your popularity playing live-shows and gigs.
If you don't know anybody you've to try looking for these contacts.
How are your gigs? How many time they last?
We are totally involved in our live-shows, Alex! Our goal is passing our
energy and the energy of our music to the audience. This is a very
important think for Lifend's members. Sometimes we are so involved
that some of us crashes something. For example, Davide, the keyboard
player, always crashes and bangs his head against the synths for the
exciting... For the second question I answer that it depends if we have to
open for a greater band (for Sadist we played just 30 minutes) or if we are
the headliner, but generally they last from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
How has been the reaction of your fans inside and outside Italy?
The fans in and outside our country have been satisfied by "Entwined
Emotions". Just read our guestbook and you can realise it. The reviews
have been positive in the most case, but even come a couple of rather
bad reviews from Russia (you know, with the icy landscapes, they have to
get warm with some thrashy and faster stuff!!!). But we don't care about it
because music is subjective and relative not objective. So if you are
somehow clever and wise you read the review (bad or good it could be)
and go on playing the music you want to propose, the message you want
to leave to the world.
Which are the italian bands that you most admire?
I think that each Lifend's member could answer in a different way... Well,
I admire acts like Ensoph, Rising Moon, Greyswan, Novembre, OperaIX,
Node, but even Aborym, Dark Lunacy, Void of Silence, Skoll, VII Arcano...
and others. As you can see there are lots of bands I respect...
When will you to release a full lenght album?
Some weeks ago we've been contacted by a little Japanese label
interested in our work. It seems that it really appreciates Lifend's project
and it wants to produce and promote worldwide a full-lenght... If all goes
on we would have a deal with this label, but I just wait to sign the
contract to tell you some others features...
What's your opinion about southamerican metal bands?
If I have to be honest I know just a few bands. I really dislike Krisiun;
I think they are boring and they play just bad and rough- shitty music
without saying anything, without a message. Just to tell "we are bad guys
so we play satan's music!!!" Ah, ah, ah... ridicolous... Sepultura are dead
since Max Cavalera's departure. From the other side I like
Infernal, Kriminal, Disgorge, Hocico...
How do you imagine Colombia?
I really don't know... I can just imagine it and I can tell you that it
could be like Italy, a sunny and naturalistic place with its good and bad
features. But do you know that you, colombian people, have given a great
present to Italy? Don't you image it?... Ivan Ramiro Cordoba!!! One of the
quickest football player of the world! W Cordoba and W Inter!!
Do you do something different to play good músic?
Thanks for "good music"!! Sure, here in Italy as in other states the bands
who can live just playing music especially heavy metal are just two or
three... (I think Lacuna Coil and the other fucking power metal band such
as Rapshody, Labyrinth..) Lifend is a band composed by six guys and
each one has got a different "occupation" or job. Sara and I, we work in a
food-shop (that's why I get fatter and fatter day by day!), Davide studies
as biologie, Alberto studies as electronic engineer, Dam as material
scientist and Roberto works in a factory. As you can see we are six normal
people... during the daylight..!!!
Thank you for the time, you can leave a message to the fans of
Southamerica...
First of all, I want to thank all the people who supports and respects
Lifend's project and especially here in Southamerica (thank you Alex).
Last but not least I want to invite all the fans and generally all the
metal kids to check out our new web-site, seek in the links of this media
And remember: The Only Certain Thing In Life... Is The End.
