ABADDON INCARNATE

IRELAND

Olan was answering this interview to present his band here in Eternal Night. I received Nadir album which was reviewed in the reviews section. What this man speaks here is very important to know the Ireland escenne.

How is the band for these days? Has it done any tour or gigs after the new CD?

No tours as yet. we have been playing some gigs around Ireland though, in some towns we had never played in. The responses were great, much better than Dublin these days. On the touring front, well hopefully we will be doing some dates with Desecration in the U.K Germany and the Czech republic, over the summer. It should amount to 2 weeks worth of gigs. These will be all self financed so they had better go well.

How was the formation of the band?

Shit, well as with all bands there is quite a history. basically Bill formed the band around 1990. back then they were known as Bereaved. I joined in about 1992. We had some line up changes with one of the original guitarists Alan Kelly leaving. We recorded The last Supper with that line up but shortly afterwards the bassist Rob Tierney left and was replaced by Cory Sloan. It's with this line up we are currently playing.

Some of the members is actually in another band or project?

Yeah Steve is playing Guitar in Geasa. they are recording their second CD at the moment.

Please speak to me of your recordings, especially Nadir album...

Well the less said about The last supper the better. Suffice to say that the whole process taught us what not to do. with Nadir it was a much more positive experience. How we came to record with Mieszko was just through contacting him by E-mail and asking could he do it and he agreed. At this stage we had rewritten our album. Had we gone with the original 8 songs the album would have sounded like a rehashed version of The last supper. Thankfully we had decided to rewrite it taking it in a more grind direction. The song that changed it for us was I will nail you in. Bill just came into rehearsals one night with the whole song written and we liked it so much and the way it was short, that we decided to scrap everything and write shorter songs. Recording in Soundlab was a much more positive experience and Mieszko helped us produce it so as you can imagine his advice was invaluable. He couldn't have helped us more. Cory's bass was broken by the baggage handlers on the way over so Mieszko took him to a music store owned by none other than Dan Swano and organised for him to have a bass for the duration. Mieszko really gives a shit which is more than you can say about the majority of engineers/producers that we've met

In which countries outside Ireland is Sentinel distributing the new album?

Right now we have distribution in the U.K the States, Germany(maybe). They are working on the rest of europe. it's a slow process though. A lot of labels want to trade and at the moment with sentinel just starting out it's not really feasible to work that way. But it will get there in the end.

how has been the selling of Nadir?

We don't know yet it's too early. The distributors are taking certain amounts but the actual sales figures from them have not come back yet

Is there already some response from the people of south america to ABADDON INCARNATE?

Yeah we get a lot of mails asking for CDs to be sent so that they can copy them and give them to their friends. From a band perspective we don't mind, the more people that hear us the better. I guess it's not so good from a labelsales point of view. But without the distributors there we don't really have a choice. In my view, it's better they hear it than not at all.

How is the underground scene in Ireland actually?

It's ok, nothing major. Unless you get a band like Cannibal .. or Morbid .. coming over, you would be lucky to get 100 people coming to your gigs. There are a lot of good bands but not enough fans you know. There is only so many times you will go and see a band in one year so we try not to play too many gigs espeically in Dublin as I mentioned already. Any band that wants to make anything of themselves need to get out and do as many gigs as possible in Europe or get out altogether. Unfortunately without a label backing you in this way it becomes pretty difficult.

Since ABADDON INCARNATE exists, which has been the best experience?

sad as it may sound probably the three dates we did with Impending Doom in Germany last year. It was the first time we had done any gigs outside of Ireland. So we got a taste of what it would be like to tour. The guys in Impending Doom treated us really well and we would love to be able to repay them with something similar over here but both the facilities in terms of decent venues with somewhere to stay and the difficulty in getting payment out of venues, inhibits the whole thing.

Do you think for the future add more instruments to your music?

What like Keyboards??? ha ha! hope not. No I can't see us diversifying to that extent.

How are the industries of your country on this moment?

Pretty good I guess. You know like anywhere it goes up and down. The I.T sectors have taken a bit of a hammering recently but I think they are on the mend. Other than that I think most business is benefiting from the so called celtic tiger. I wish Irish music was doing as well.

Which is the most beautiful place that Ireland has and why do you consider it?

I love Galway and anywhere in the west. It is far more rugged than the rest of Ireland. The mountains are much more impressive. It is wetter over there if that's possible but it is very different.

Thank you for the answer of this interview, do you have any final commentary?
