SALMAN TEAMS WITH JOHN MAJOR!
Former British prime minister in India!

When it comes to unlikely partnerships, this one rates highly! Bollywood superstar Salman Khan teamed up with Britain’s former Prime Minister John Major to support underprivileged and orphaned children in India. The pair visited an art auction in New Delhi to help raise funds for Khushii (Kinship for Humanitarian Social and Holistic Intervention in India), a charity for underprivileged children. Salman Khan in particular was full of charm and won over all the attendees. Also present was Lillet Dubey, seen in movies such as Monsoon Wedding, Bhaghban and Kal Ho Na Ho, performing her new play, Zen Katha.

Hollywood project to take off

By Taran Adarsh, November 03rd, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

This Hollywood project made a lot of noise when it was announced. In fact, the film, starring a top Indian actor and a Hollywood actress, made Page 1 news for quite some time.

Unfortunately, there were whispers that the project had fizzled out. Reportedly, the project seemed non-viable to the foreign investors. But no official statement was issued to that effect.

The Indian actor also maintained that the project was happening, but the date of its launch seemed unclear. But here's some good news…

The project has finally found an investor, who's very much part of the Hindi film industry. The investor, currently involved in production and exhibition, has almost signed the deal. So, yes, the actor is all set to take his first step in Hollywood.

Will he make it in Beverly Hills, unlike his ex [her first Hollywood project didn't quite fare well], only time will tell!

'Shaadi' postponed

By Taran Adarsh, October 14th, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

The forthcoming Salman Khan - Shilpa Shetty starrer SHAADI KARKE PHAS GAYA YAAR, which was scheduled for release on October 22 [Dashehra week], was shifted to November 12 [Diwali week] subsequently. But there's talk that the film will be postponed by another two weeks. In all probability, the film will hit the screens on November 26.

The reason for pushing the film to a latter date is due to paucity of theatres, mainly in the Overseas circuit. With VEER-ZAARA being the first choice of all theatres and AITRAAZ next on the list, the remaining films in the Diwali week would find it difficult to get exhibition outlets.

The decision by Bubby Kent, producer of SHAADI KARKE PHAS GAYA YAAR, makes wise business sense!

Salman - Atul together again?

DIL NE JISE APNA KAHAA may have gone unnoticed at the box-office, but Atul Agnihotri is back on his feet. Anyone in his place would've taken a break, trying to analyze what went wrong, but Atul is brimming with ideas. He is well aware that success and failure are two sides of the coin and one Friday can change everything.

“I am going through a lot of scripts. I am meeting people and discussing ideas. There's nothing concrete at the moment. I've yet to decide on the subject,” Atul confides.

It's a foregone conclusion that brother-in-law Salman Khan would star in Atul's next film as well. “Nothing is decided. Let me finalize a script first,” Atul adds. But here's hoping that Atul bounces back with renewed vigour!

Bajirao mastani to be shelved

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is in a fix. He had a casting coup of sorts when he roped in Kareena Kapoor opposite Salman Khan for his magnum opus Bajirao Mastani. But after the announcement of Sunil Manchanda's film to be directed by Priyadarshan starring the two, Bhansali is planning to scrap Bajirao Mastani, a film that has been shrouded in controversy from the beginning.

According to industry sources, Bhansali wanted the audience to see the Salman-Kareena pair for the first time in his film. But the delay in the launch of the film, with Bhansali still working on the post-production of Black, took its toll. Meanwhile, the lead actors decided to go ahead and do another film together.

A lot of people feel that the title, Bajirao Mastani, is jinxed. Two previous attempts by other filmmakers to make films with the same name failed to see the light of day. So, the odds of Bhansali going ahead with the project seem very bleak. It maybe recalled here, that rumour mills were abuzz with the news that Aishwarya Rai has been sending feelers to Bhansali about
reconsidering the project.

Though the actress did meet Bhansali a couple of times to discuss some projects, her business manager Hari Singh denied any such developments. Ash too confirmed that she will not work with Khan again.

But insiders insist that Ash was keen on doing the project, while it was Salman Khan who put his foot down and refused to work with her.

'Sorry, Main Shaadi Shuda Hoon'

By Taran Adarsh, September 23rd, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

David Dhawan is in a dilemma! The badshaah of non-stop entertainers is yet to find a suitable title for his in-the-making Salman-Sushmita-Katrina starrer. Though David has never had problems getting a fitting title for his films, he's in a quandary this time around.

“I am confused, I am not getting an appropriate title,” David tells me. What kind of a title is he looking for the film? “It has to be bizarre. Something that would evoke instant reactions from the viewers when they first hear it,” he elaborates.

After a pause, the prolific film-maker adds, “I am pondering over something like SORRY, MAIN SHAADI SHUDA HOON. Sounds different… But I am still hunting for that right title.” So, after MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, expect another 'Shaadi' in the title. This time, the guy is not proposing, but informing that's already married!

'Lucky' in two versions

By Taran Adarsh, August 31st, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

There's no denying that the Overseas territory is amongst the most fruitful territory today, provided a film works at the box-office. There has been many an instance of a film recovering more than half the investment or even more from this territory itself. That explains why every producer is targeting the film at the global audience today.

Sometime back, this writer broke the news of Subhash Ghai making KISNA in two versions. And now comes the news that Salman Khan's home-production LUCKY has also been made in two versions - Hindi and English.

Shot entirely in Russia, the producers of LUCKY [Sohail Khan Productions, Super Cassettes Industries Ltd.] have shot the film in two versions simultaneously - Hindi and English. However, the makers have yet to arrive at a decision whether or not to incorporate songs in the English version and also whether the length of the two versions would be the same or different.

Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru are the directors of LUCKY.

Bollywood AIDS film gets UN praise

UNITED NATIONS: Bollywood filmmaker Revathy Menon's new movie Phir Milenge has come in for high praise from the  United Nations for its attempt to break ignorance, fear, stigma and discrimination surrounding the HIV/AIDS.

The movie is about a successful career woman who suddenly learns that she is HIV-positive.

"When Bollywood, one of the world's largest film industries with massive audiences, produces a film about AIDS, everyone has to sit up and take notice," Executive Director of the joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Peter Piot, said.

It is extremely significant that Bollywood is joining struggle against the epidemic and helping to break the silence that surrounds
HIV and AIDS, he said.

"We applaud the making of this film," he added.

The United Nations noted that the movie industry at Bollywood is huge and Phir Milenge would make an important contribution in a country where an estimated 15 million watch movies each day and 5.1 millions are living with AIDS, the highest number outside the South Africa.

"People are dying or getting infected every minute and I hope this film will highlight what we are up against in India today," Revathy was quoted by the UN as saying.

"I think it is vital to both confront injustice and help people get access to treatment," she said.

"It is up to all of us to challenge the stigma and I hope I've played my part by taking on the role of Rohit when some other actors were, perhaps, a little reluctant," actor Salman Khan, who stars in the movie, said.

He also says that he was encouraged after speaking to those who organizes in inviting Bollywood stars to Maldives.

Salman’s ‘family affair’ in Maldives

Salman Khan is quite a family man and here’s more proof of it. For the shooting of his untitled film, being directed by David Dhawan, the hero currently riding high on the wave of success, has taken along his entire family to the Maldives. So while Salman bhaiyya works, Arbaaz and his wife Malaika Arora-Khan, sister Alvira and brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri can all have a holiday on the island.

As for Sohail Khan, he is one of the two producers of the film as also the second hero and so his wife and child have, of course, accompanied him. And what about Salman’s girlfriend, Katrina Kaif? Well, well, she is the heroine of the film. So she’s there too!

Phir Milenge gets UN pat

By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 21st, 2004 - 1230 hrs IST

Mitr - My Friend director Revathy has reason to cheer. Her second Bollywood attempt Phir Milenge is ready for 27th August release. But more importantly, international acclaim is coming to her by way of the UN applauding the lady's brave attempt at dealing with a risqué subject like AIDS.

Peter Piot, the executive director of UN programme, UNAIDS comments, “When Bollywood, one of the world's largest film industries with massive audiences, produces a film about AIDS, everyone has to sit up and take notice” He further adds, “It is extremely encouraging that India is joining the struggle to erase the fear, stigma and despair that surrounds AIDS-HIV.” He's quick to add, “It is a courageous effort and we are totally appreciate of it”

Meanwhile what is Revathy's take on the issue, to which the low profile director answered, “Millions in India are dying of the virus. Medication and a conducive mindset is what is required to tackle it. The problem needs a voice. Hope the film lends it”

Salman's fee for charity

Salman Khan has a heart of gold - isn't that well-known by now? That Salman is very much into charity is also no secret anymore. But here's something you didn't know and the actor wouldn't like to shout from rooftops about it.

Not many are aware that Salman hasn't charged a single penny yet to the producers of PHIR MILENGE. In fact, he has left it to the makers' discretion to decide upon the amount that he deserves for the film. Now something like this is unheard of in today's times.

But that's not the end of the story. The actor has decided that whatever money may be forthcoming from the makers of PHIR MILENGE will be quickly donated to a municipal school near the actor's residence in Bandra.

Salman was caught unaware when I called to confirm. “Yes, it's for a charitable cause,” Salman informs me. That's another benevolent side of the actor - doing charity, but keeping mum!

I think Salman is mind-blowing!”
By IndiaFM News Bureau

After playing a news reporter in Lakshya, Preity Zinta is making news in the Atul Agnihotri directed Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa. Looking ultra chic in a black outfit, Preity chats camera and questions. In an interview with IndiaFM , the zesty Zinta talks about her character, Pari in this romantic entertainer.

Reports insist that your role in the film is a guest appearance that's been stretched into a longer one. Is it true?
In the beginning, with a brief 15-day shooting stint, even I felt that the role would be reduced to a guest appearance. But Atul being a quick head canned a lot of shots fast and easy. The product looks superior and I am very happy with the final outcome.

Salman is supposed to be highly temperamental. How was your experience working with him?
Temperamental is the media tag that Salman is carrying. Personally speaking, he has never been a problem person. No insecurities between us. There is a high comfort zone present. Our work equation is very good. I have never had any issues with him either.

You are starring with him for the third time. What kind of chemistry do the two of you share?
I just watched the first copy of the film and the chemistry between us has to be seen to be believed. I think we share a fabulous chemistry. As for Salman, I think the guy is mind-blowing!

How was it working with actor-director Atul Agnihotri?
Oh, Atul's wonderful for a first-timer. The best aspect about him is that he is cool-headed. Not the one to loose his calm, he is the perfect crisis-man. That apart, as a director too, he is articulate and knows exactly what he wants out of the actors and the scene.

What is the Preity Zinta that we get to see in Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa?
I play the character of Pari, a doctor. I am wife of Rishabh [Salman]. It is a sweet, simple, heart-warming story. And has a feel-good factor about it. Thoroughly enjoyable, I must say.

How do you like the music?
The music has varied scores, each suiting the mood of the plot. They are soft, mellow numbers that you would love to listen may be on a drive back home. It's not the jarring kind.

Which year has been very special to you?
As an actor, I would like every year of mine to be special. But 2004 is going to be extra special for sure.

Interview: Sajid Nadiadwala

The name Sajid Nadiadwala spells youth. All his oeuvres have been aimed straight and unabashedly for the youth. What began as a casual tryst with Bollywood, in the form of 'Zulm Ki Hukumat', starring Dharmendra and Govinda, soon developed into a passion. His debut vehicle was no great shake, but undaunted, Sajid moved on to bigger times with the Akshay Kumar-Suniel Shetty starrer 'Waqt Hamara Hai', followed by the Sanjay Dutt starrer 'Aandolan'. But the big time box-office success kept eluding him.

Then began a journey with a star called Salman Khan, who turned out to be his lucky mascot. Together they made 'Jeet', which was directed by Raj Kanwar, and co-starred Sunny Deol. Sajid tasted blood for the first time as a producer and he became obsessed with it. He teamed with Salman once again for 'Judwaa', this time with director David Dhawan. The combination of the producer-star worked again and 'Judwaa' went on to become a big hit. They then made 'Har Dil Jo Pyar Karenga' with Raj Kanwar, which also clicked at the box-office.

Now they are on the threshold of setting the silver screen ablaze with 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', also directed by David Dhawan, which also marks the second inning for the director. The film released this week to a bumper response and Sajid has reason to smile. Now, we'll go over to Sajid Nadiadwala for a brief and candid chat...

Post 'Tere Naam', Salman Khan has become hot property, as Akshay Kumar has after 'Andaaz'. Has that helped 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' to receive such a huge opening?
Well, I can thank my stars for that. But then, Salman has always proved lucky for me.

What is the secret behind your connecting with Salman?
Everybody knows about our friendship. But don't forget, even on professional level we have a good understanding. Besides, whenever we plan film, we plan it in 4 to 6 months time. This helps in a big way.

Why do you take such long time between films?
Making too many films at one time doesn't suit my mentality. Of course, I made 'Jeet' and 'Judwaa' at the same time. Also, I don't believe in announcing too many projects at one time either. I would rather spend that time working on the script.

Like Salman, directors David Dhawan and Raj Kanwar have proven lucky for you...
That's also true. I always plan a film with a forte of directors in mind. Likewise, I made 'Judwaa' and 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', both fun films, with David, while 'Jeet' and 'Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega', emotional films, with Raj Kanwar.

Today filmmaking is divided between two types - either big star cast films or sex based films. Is there future for in-between films?
I don't believe that there is no scope for in-between films. As long as a film is good, any genre will run. It all depends on the conviction of the filmmaker.

Today, even the biggest of filmmakers are tying-up with corporate houses. Do you have plans for this venture too?
You need corporate help when you are making too many films at a time. Since I prefer making one film at time, there is no need for me to tie-up with corporate houses.

What changes have you seen in filmmaking during the last decade?
In recent times, people have started to understand the value of professionalism. More and more educated people have come into our industry. People give importance to finishing a film in one schedule, whether it's a small budget film or a 25 crore film.

What's next after 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'?
There will be a short break and then another film.

Salman main villain of 'Fida'?

Is Salman Khan the main villain in FIDA? Thanks to a statement the star made in one of his recent interviews, the speculation has gathered momentum that the Khan, whose identity is concealed in the film's promotions, is enacting the main negative role in FIDA.

Is it true? “I am not saying anything,” FIDA director Ken Ghosh smiles as I broach the topic, “We've been maintaining in our promos that the love story is being written by someone else. Now, who this person is will be unveiled only on August 20, when the film releases worldwide. So, wait until then.”

FIDA producer Ramesh Taurani was also caught unaware when this writer called him next. “No comments,” he smiled, “At this stage, I wouldn't like to comment on this issue.” Sources close to Salman also appeared non-committal.

Meanwhile, the music as well as the eye-catching promos of FIDA have caught on in a very big way and from the looks of it, the film should take an electrifying start when it opens.

Salman different in 'D.N.J.A.K.'

Actor Atul Agnihotri's life underwent a metamorphosis when he decided to direct a film. Starting out as director Pankaj Parashar's assistant, then being launched as an actor, and now making his directorial debut with DIL NE JISE APNA KAHAA, Atul's life has come a full circle.

“DIL NE JISE APNA KAHAA has shaped up exactly the way I had conceived it,” Atul informs me. Incidentally, Atul has added an extra 'l' to his name, which is now spelt as Atull. Even surname Agnihotri will now be spelt as Agniho'u'tri. For numerological reasons? “Yes, somebody suggested that I add that an extra 'l' and 'u' for numerological reasons. I've tried too many things in my life, so I said to myself, let's try this one as well,” he smiles.

There seems to be an overdose of Salman Khan starrers in the marquee. While both GARV and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI have been released, the third Salman starrer PHIR MILENGE is slated for release on August 27, while Atul's film, DIL NE JISE APNA KAHAA, will hit the screens on September 10.

“Every film is different,” Atul seems unfazed by the overdose, “GARV was a violent film, MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI is a fun-filled entertainer, PHIR MILENGE is an issue-based film, while DIL NE JISE APNA KAHAA is a love story. Even Salman is different in all the films, so nothing to worry.”

Incidentally, A.R. Rahman has composed three songs in DIL NE JISE APNA KAHAA, while Himesh Reshammiya has tuned the remaining three.

Invite Salman Khan to your shaadi

By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 29th, 2004

Wanna invite Salman Khan to your Shaadi? It's very much possible! All you got to do is watch his latest release Mujhse Shaadi Karogi at the Fame Adlabs multiplex in Mumbai and answer some simple questions. If you are the lucky one, Salman will be the chief guest to your function.

Others prizes include a foreign honeymoon trip and wedding outfits by Biba and Neeta Lulla. Well, everything's designed as per the Shaadi theme of the film.

ABHISHEK BACHCHAN On 'Phir Milenge'

“I have never played a lawyer before and this particular character of Tarun in PHIR MILENGE is such that looking at him you'd never know he's a lawyer. He's a cool, happy guy, very cheerful. He's a good-hearted guy who is happy with everyone. Basically, Revathy's brief to me was 'When I see Tarun, I don't want to see a lawyer.'

“I think the moment a film has a social issue as its theme, people shouldn't assume that it's going to be some serious, preachy film. PHIR MILENGE is not a docudrama. The idea is not to bore anybody or give sermons.

“I absolutely enjoyed working with Revathy. She's very fast, in the sense that I think I finished my work in just 12 days! After a hard day's work, a lady director is more likely to be sympathetic towards you and let you go home. I certainly want to work with more lady directors.

“I don't have any scenes with Salman. But, yes, working with Shilpa was fun. She's a warm person, very easy to work with and I think the kind of warmth and dignity she needed to bring to her character, she has done that extremely well. Besides, after a long time I was working with someone who didn't need a paatla to stand on! She is tall and so that was not a problem.

Why 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' went to Mauritius

Sajid Nadiadwala's 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' will open this Friday to a an earth shattering response for sure, and here is an interesting tit-bit about why the movie was shot in Mauritius despite being based in Goa. According to producer Sajid Nadiadwala, the movie has a lot of beach scenes and ocean shots. While Goa has some of the best beaches in the world, the clear waters of Mauritius were the main reason for shifting there and the results are worth the extra crores spent. Lets hope so Mr. Nadiadwala!

“I don't want any compliments” - Salman Khan

By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 26th, 2004

Whether for a mass-oriented film like Garv or an issue-based cinema like Phir Milenge, Salman Khan has his own loyal fan following. The macho Khan is looking forward to his next release Mujhse Shaadi Karogi where he teams up with Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra for the first time.

In an exclusive interview to IndiaFM, Salman opens his heart on everything from his next release to the media tagging him hero for saving two lives last week.

You are working with Akshay Kumar for the first time. How was the experience like?
It was a good experience working with him. We worked like friends, like brothers. Prior to this we worked together in shows. The film is on one-upmanship - nehle pe dehla. But in real life, it was made in very good spirit. There wasn't any competition.

Tell us about your character Sameer in the film?
Sameer is a short-tempered man. He cannot tolerate anything wrong. Woh mooh se kam aur haath se zyada baat karta hai. He wants to marry and whenever he feels something like this is about to happen, something untoward happens. His intentions are good but the outcome is bad.

Both Akshay Kumar and David Dhawan are said to have a great sense of comic timing. How did you match your timing with them?
I know about their timing. They have put in a lot of hard work and dedication. Mine… well it just happened. I myself do not realize what I do. It just comes. Nothing is rehearsed. Nothing is practiced.

Just recently you helped three guys who met with an accident…
If you think taking someone to the hospital is extraordinary, I think it's embarrassing. I feel shameful when someone asks me if you have done something extraordinary. I have done nothing. People keep praying all the time, worshipping all the time but when someone is in real trouble, nobody comes forward. It's embarrassing that people say 'you are a real life hero'. It's stupid. Everyone should do it. I don't see any of my friends saying me that you have done an amazing thing. I don't want any compliments. Actually I have done that for a selfish reason just thinking that my friends, my family members or I could have been in the victim's place.

What kind of a role interests you the most?
It depends on the mood. Like today I am shooting for a song and I am in no mood to dance. If I get to play someone who sleeps and sleeps then I could play that character very well. If I move out of the house in a happy mood, I like to do comedy. If someone irritates me, then an action scene would be better (laughs). If I am depressed, an emotional scene will go good. I can't play opposite to my mood. I am not amongst those who do not carry forward their mood to the sets. I cannot play two roles like this is Salman Khan's personal life and this is his professional life. How do people switch moods, I do not understand.

What things make Salman Khan happy?
Goodness, positive energy, truth, good people, people helping each other, people being nice to people, people being honest. I stay away from fraud, slyness, and corruption. Now everyone has his own thoughts and maybe mine is wrong. Some people are very happy with stealing, killing and frauds.

You had been offered to play the role of Lord Ram. How much truth is it in the news?
Yes, it's true. They are working on the script so that there is no controversy later on. It's going to be a film more for kids because the character I am playing is very correct. And that is why we are making Ram so that children grow up to be the most amazing brother, the most amazing son, the most amazing husband, the most amazing ruler and the most amazing person like Ram. It is going to be done very simply on a very large scale with lot of principles, values so that children are educated.

Salman Versus Ash, Big B Versus Son
By Taran Adarsh, July 17th, 2004

It's battle royal on August 13, 2004. As things stand today, the two biggies - KYON! HO GAYA NA… and PHIR MILENGE - are scheduled to hit the screens on August 13. What's so special, did you ask? Well, read on…

It's a special week because the date will witness the clash of a Salman starrer [PHIR MILENGE] with that of a Vivek - Ash starrer [KYON! HO GAYA NA]. The ex-lovers - Salman and Ash - may not have clashed in real life, but expect the [reel-life] fireworks on August 13.

Similarly, it's the first time when two films of the Bachchans - father and son - are pitted in the same week. While the ffather is an integral part of KYON! HO GAYA NA…, son Abhishek plays a stellar role in PHIR MILENGE.

Incidentally, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are the music composers of the two films.

Await Friday the 13th… let's see who wins the race!

Gratitude towards Salman Khan

Just yesterday we informed you about Salman Khan's real life heroic act wherein he helped out three brothers who crashed into an accident just near his building in the wee hours of Thursday morning. And though unfortunately one of the three boys lost his life in the ill-fated accident, their family members have expressed gratitude towards Salman for his timely help that saved the lives of the other two.

Salman smashed the window of the car to rescue the boys and carried one of the injured boys on his shoulders. He also paid the deposit at Lilavati hospital to get the boys admitted.

SALMAN SAVES TWO BOYS
Midday: July 16, 2004

Salman Khan has done a deed befitting a hero. In the wee hours of Thursday, the Bollywood actor ran out of his Bandra home to help three boys seriously injured in a car accident, rushed them to Lilavati Hospital, informed their parents of the mishap, and then stayed some longer at the hospital to offer assistance.
At about 3 am yesterday, a Lancer crashed into a pole opposite Galaxy building in Bandra (W), where Salman lives. Three boys were in the car, brothers Anzar Darvesh (17) and Turaib Darvesh (21), and their friend Raunak B.
Salman heard the crash and rushed out of his house. Then, with the help of a servant and  a police constable who was on duty in the area, the actor took the gravely injured boys to Lilavati Hospital.
While Anzar died from injuries, his older brother Turaib and Raunak were in the Intensive Care Unit at the time of going to press.
The Darvesh family said, “Salman saw the accident and rushed the boys to hospital. He phoned the family and informed us about the accident. He was at the hospital for a long time after that. He has been a great help.”
The Bandra police confirmed the accident. A senior police official said, “The actor has helped out in this case.”
Turaib is studying in London and was down in Mumbai on a holiday. Dr Ashish Mehta, consultant neurosurgeon at Breach Candy and Lilavati Hospitals and head of the neurosurgery department at Lilavati, confirmed that Turaib was in the ICU.
However, he refused to elaborate on the state of his patient, saying it was against professional ethics to do so.
The Darvesh family is a well-known Bandra business family with extensive interests in timber. They have sprawling property comprising a bungalow and an attached four-floor building at Perry Road, Bandra.
Salman Khan, when contacted, refused to speak on the matter.
In September 2002, Salman Khan  had hit the headlines after he crashed his Land Cruiser near the American Express bakery in Bandra (W), killing one man and injuring others.

Salman does a real-life heroic act
By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 16th, 2004

Salman Khan does a heroic act. And here we are not referring to any of his superhuman screen deeds. Just in the wee hours of Thursday night, Salman offered a helping hand to three boys in desperate need. At around 3 am yesterday, a Lancer crashed into a pole opposite Galaxy building in Bandra where Salman stays. Three boys in the car were seriously injured. At that moment, Salman who heard the crash rushed out to the spot and with the help of his servant and an on-duty policeman rushed the boys to the Lilavati hospital.

While one of the boys succumbed to his injuries, the other two are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

Salman in 'Aryan'?

The film industry is abuzz with reports of Salman Khan having volunteered to be a part of Abhishek [Gattu] Kapoor's directorial debut ARYAN, starring Sohail Khan in the title role.

It may be recalled that a top actor is being considered for a special role in the film and who better than Salman Khan for the role in question. For, it's a known fact that Salman has always stood by his family and friends whenever they've needed him.

However, Gattu was non-committal when this writer spoke to him. “We are speaking to someone, but I wouldn't like to comment at this juncture,” is all that he said. Will Salman step in - watch this space!

WHAT MAKES SALMAN STARRERS TICK?
By Taran Adarsh, July 15th, 2004

He may not be working with the best of directors, like the Chopras, Johars and Akhtars. He may not be as market savvy as some of his contemporaries. But that hasn't stopped Salman Khan starrers from fetching a grand opening.

If TERE NAAM opened to a fantabulous response last year, GARV, his latest release, opened to a cent percent response at a majority of centres. So, what is it about Salman that has resulted in his films opening to a great response?

If SRK enjoys tremendous following amongst the classes/gentry/multiplex crowd and Hrithik is popular with kids, Salman's strength clearly lies with the hardcore masses that constitute a sizeable chunk of the audience.

Talking of his latest release GARV, the terrific start of the film must've come as a surprise to many within the industry. The film has been directed by a first-timer, it was based on a theme that has been beaten to death of late [AB TAK 56, KHAKEE, BARDAASHT, POLICE FORCE, AAN, DEV], the release period wasn't really the best one [schools and colleges are preparing for their first tests]…

Yet, GARV took a superb start, even at stations where 'House full' boards are a rarity.

The credit for the superb opening also goes to the producers of the film, Cinevistaas, who promoted the film aggressively prior to its release. The producers may have been down by a couple of crores prior to its release [the film did go over-budget], but that didn't stop them from giving their best shot to the film.

After a flying start, the collections of GARV have started sliding downwards. But the drop isn't alarming. The film is faring well at single screens, but is not too strong at multiplexes [the business is clearly divided nowadays!]. Yet, on the strength of its superb start, the distributors of the film should be able to recover the investment in weeks to come.

Now, the focus has shifted to the next Salman starrer MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, directed by the badshaah of non-stop entertainers David Dhawan. The buzz on the film is extremely positive, thanks to its fresh casting, popular music and catchy promotion.

So, if you find a serpentine queue of baraatis [viewers] outside the mandap [cinema halls], just don't be surprised!

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi's music is creating waves

The music of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainments' latest offering, 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' has caught on in a big way. Its three songs - 'Rab Kare Mujhko Bhi Pyaar Ho Jaye' (Udit, Alka), 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' (Sonu, Udit, Sunidhi) and 'Aaja Soniya' (Sonu, Alka) were instant hits.

Now, its fourth song - 'Laal Dupatta' is also rapidly climbing the popularity charts. The remaining three songs are also quite easy to hum (though not in the same league). With the film yet to release, one has to wait and see where the present sales figures of 13-14 lakh units (very near to that of 'Hum Tum' and 'Lakshya') end up!

No wonder the music of the film is selling like hot cakes and has put its music directors Sajid and Wajid in the top league overnight.

Salman and Vivek's lucky 13!
INDIATIMES MOVIES

Remember the infamous cellphone skirmish between the Khan and the Oberoi?
Well, though it's a thing of the past now, Salman Khan and his ‘rival’ Vivek Oberoi are heading for another showdown...very soon. The only difference this time around is that it won't be cellphones that will 'ring' the battle royal, but the BO cash registers. Both Salman's 'Phir Milenge' and Vivek's 'Kyun! Ho Gaya Naa’ (co starring Aishwarya), are slated to release on the same day - 13th August. Considering their infamous tug-of-phone-war, it will be interesting to see who will win the most territory at the box office a few weeks from now! 13 is bound to be lucky for one at least

Salman is 'He Man'

By Taran Adarsh, July 08th, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

Puneet Issar, who makes his big screen directorial debut with GARV, is all geared up to start two more films, both with Salman Khan. While the first project is titled HE MAN, the second is called TABEER - WHEN DREAMS COME TRUE.

What's the essence of these two films? “HE MAN is an emotional film,” Puneet informs me, “The title may give you the impression of it being an action film, but it's not. On the contrary, the film looks at a relationship between a child and his father.”

Please elaborate. “For every child his father is the only 'He Man' he knows and my film talks about that,” he divulges.

TABEER - WHEN DREAMS COME TRUE is again different from GARV and HE MAN. “TABEER is a passionate love story,” he divulges. Incidentally, Salman has approved both the scripts. Who'd produce the two films? “That shouldn't be a problem, since Salman has agreed to enact the principal character in both the films. Things should fall in place in a few weeks from now,” he concludes.

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi cast on ESPN Star Sports

By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 08th, 2004 - 1700 hrs IST

ESPN Star Sports may soon start Hindi programming with the upcoming cricket tournament - IndianOil Asia Cup starting from July 16 that will see countries like India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Popular TV host Shekhar Sumar (of Movers and Shakers, Simply Shekhar and Poll Khol shows fame) is roped in as the Hindi commentator along with notable names in the field like Waqar Younis, Vinod Kambli, Maninder Singh and Arun Lal.

Now you may wonder where does Mujhse Shaadi Karogi feature in between all this. Well in one of these shows, Shekhar Suman will use the Mujhse Shaadi Karogi cast of Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra to promote the show (and in a way also the film).

But why is the film Mujhse Shaadi Karogi specifically chosen for the show. That's because the climax of this David Dhawan film is also set on the cricket field and is shot amongst the participation of noted Indian cricketers like Kapil Dev, Navjot Singh Siddhu, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Mohammed Kaif, Ashish Nehra, Parthiv Patel and Srinath.

Garv gets 'A' certificate

Cinevista's next 'Garv - Pride and Honour' was censored today and got 'A' certificate. We will be seeing Salman Khan as a cop in this film after a long time, last time we saw him as a cop was in 'Patthar Ke Phool' (Raveena Tandon's debut film). The film also marks directorial debut of Puneet Issar who is still recognized as Duryodhan of Mahabharat fame. Haven't we had enough of cop tales?

Shilpa Shetty on matters close to her heart

Syed Firdaus Ashraf | June 30, 2004

A Shilpa Shetty film has been long in coming. You saw her last as a heroine in a bit role in Darna Manaa Hai. And as a solo heroine in the little known Karz.

Now, she's back with two films: Garv and Phir Milenge. Coincidentally, she stars opposite Salman Khan in both films.

If Garv sees Shilpa at her glamorous, sexy best, Phir Milenge showcases her as someone who is, as she says, "HIV positive."

More on her films in conversation with Senior Associate Editor Syed Firdaus Ashraf:

What is your role in Garv?

I play an Muslim orphan. Her name is Jannat. She is a bar dancer. She admires the hero, Salman Khan, because of his integrity. She thinks all men look at her as a body, but this man treats her like a human being.

Did you do any homework for this character?

Not really. This is not very serious role like Tabu's in Chandni Bar. It [Garv] is essentially a cop drama. My character is involved with the hero. We [the makers] have concentrated on that. We have not concentrated on the turmoil that goes on in her life.

Tabu played a bar girl in Chandni Bar. Kareena Kapoor played a streetwalker in Chameli. Are you also trying to follow in their footsteps by doing different roles?

I don't believe in following anyone's footsteps. I am doing this film [Garv] because I liked the subject. It is a big budget film and I know it will be presented well. That is the only criterion for me to do Garv. I am not here [in the movie] to make an impact. It is a male-dominated film.

You are working in Phir Milenge, which deals with Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome [AIDS]. Comment.

Anand touched on cancer. Why not a film on HIV positive patients? It is a social stigma in our society. We made this film to highlight this problem.

It is not preachy. It is a very sweet love story. It is the journey of these characters Abhishek [Bachchan], Salman [Khan] and me. In the midst of which the spectre of this HIV positive pops up. I keep emphasising HIV positive because I didn't know the difference between HIV positive and AIDS. AIDS and HIV positive mein zameen aasman ka farak hai [There is a world of a difference between the two].

This film will bring about a social awareness about AIDS in our country. It is high time we talked about this in our society. Remember there was a stigma associated with tuberculosis earlier? But that has changed with time, hasn't it?

You aren't doing too many films. Is that a deliberate decision?

I have become selective because I can afford to [laughs]. I want to do meatier roles.

It is always great to be glamorous. I have enjoyed the jhatkas-matkas in all my films. I want to balance that with films like Phir Milenge. But there is another problem. If you do serious films, people think you are only open to arty films. I want to strike a balance between the jhatka-matka and serious films.

I am doing Dus because my character is very unconventional. I am playing an anti terrorist squad member. I wear holsters, use guns and my hair is all tied up. I don't look pretty in the film. I look tough. It is a meaty role and has given me the chance to reinvent myself. I am now looking for roles that are different. I want more paradigm shifts in my role.

What about item numbers?

I am doing those too. That is why Garv. Item songs have made Shilpa Shetty. I cannot be disrespectful toward them. I just think I have more potential. I want to tap it by doing other kind of roles too

I feel more confident after Phir Milenge. Dhadkan changed people's attitude towards me. People felt I couldn't fit into other characters, but Dhadkan proved them wrong.

Is there any particular filmmaker you have always craved to work with?

Yes. I want to work with all those directors who would love to work with me (laughs). I would love to work with Steven Spielberg, but he should also want to work with me (laughs).

I would love to work with Mani Ratnam. Also, Shankar and Ram Gopal Varma -- I respect them because they are very different and they take risks in making films.

Many heroines who entered the industry with you have tied the knot. Any plans of getting married?

I don't know. Marriage is not planned. It just happens. I don't think it will happen for another two years. My priority lies here [in the film industry] now. I won't leave my producers in the lurch. I will make a fair exit before going for that decision.

Have you achieved everything in life?

You think I have achieved everything?

Well, you have lasted ten years.

Yes. I take that as a compliment. In terms of achievement, every artiste is greedy. You don't know where to put a fullstop. I want to be remembered. I hope to carve a niche for myself after doing the films [I am doing] this year.

Did you expect to last so long?

Nobody does. There have been many times that people have written me off. Five years ago, I was completely written off. Then there was a Dhadkan and I came back. I didn't have a release for a year and people wondered where I had disappeared. I always feel there is a lull before the storm. Like now [laughs]! I have so many films ready for release.

You are working with Salman Khan in three films. Is it a coincidence?

I did Shaadi Karke Phans Gaya Yaar some time back with Salman. It was supposed to release almost a year ago. It got delayed because of some date problems. One song has to be shot and that too will be released soon.

For Phir Milenge, I was signed first. Then came Abhishek followed by Salman. I could not tell Revathy not to take Salman, could I? I fit those characters and so did Salman. He is a very dear friend of mine. The rapport [we share] is fantastic. He is very helpful. He is not self-serving. If I do something wrong, he tells me where I am going wrong.

What are your future projects?

This year, I am doing Dus, Kanch, Shaadi Karke Phans Gaya Yaar and Khamosh. Next year, I am doing a film with Amitji [Bachchan]. Vikram Bhatt will direct it.

Aren't you also part of PETA (People for Ethical Treatment to Animals)?

I feel very strongly towards this cause. There is too much injustice happening towards animals. My entire family loves animals. Our pets at home are family. I was appalled when I came to know what atrocities animals are subjected to in the circuses. I thought I should stop that. If I can make a little difference to their lives, why not go for it?

Do you read books?

I do read but I am not a voracious reader. It is not like I cannot do without reading. Right now, I am reading scripts [laughs]. They are stories. [There is a book named] Many Lives, Many Masters. I forgot the author's name [Brian L Weiss]. He is awesome. He writes on past life regression. That intrigues me. He has also written Only Love Is Real.

How do you keep so fit?

I used to work out regularly. I don't diet much. To be fit is very important to me. I don't go overboard on what I eat. I am genetically blessed.

MSK Plot

In true Baywatch style, Salman Khan plays Samir, a lifeguard on the beaches of Goa. But it is not the bikini babes that catch his attention. It is Rani (Priyanka Chopra), a fashion designer.

Samir would have had an easy ride in his pursuit for love, if not for Sunny (Akshay Kumar). Sunny also has his eye out for Rani, and always snuffs out Samir's romantic plans.

To make matters worse, the two men share the same flat.

While each tries to win over Rani, the queen of hearts herself is trying to keep her strict father, an army veteran (Amrish Puri), out of the equation.

Whom will Rani choose: Samir or Sunny? Find out when Mujhse Shaadi Karoge releases on July 30!

Sajid Nadiadwala: 'The combination of Akshay and Salman will make headlines'
GAUTAM BURAGOHAIN

INDIATIMES MOVIES

Is it true that you have roped in cricketers like Kapil Dev, Irfan Patel, Navjot Singh and Harbhajan Singh to make a brief appearance in ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karoge’?
I would not like to comment on anything at this stage. Please wait for some time;
you will get to know everything shortly.

You are not known for making comedies. Why did you decide to go for this genre this time around?
You have got to try your hand at new things; you can’t stick to your old formulas all the time. One has to change with time. Moreover, ‘MSK’ is not an out-and-out comedy movie. It’s a romantic comedy. I am a romantic person, while David (Dhawan) is comic. So one can say that the movie is about me and David.

Your last film was four years ago. What took this long for another film from you?
I was relaxing, chilling out with my family and friends. But at the same time I was in search of a good script to launch my next film. Luckily, David Dhawan stepped in with the script of ‘MSK’ and I was game for it.

Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are working together for the first time...
You are right. Both of them are my close friends. Akshay Kumar is my school friend and Salman is family to me. I have known him for years. You should see for yourself their comic timing - their combination will make headlines.

Don’t you think Salman and Akshay are a bit old for this kind of teenage comedy show?
Don’t be crazy. I’m amazed at the way actors like Salman, Sanjay (Dutt) and Akshay have maintained themselves at this age. They are so fit and healthy for actors of their age. I’m of Salman’s age, and look at me (he laughs)! I really envy them.

Is it true that you have shot the promos for “MSK’ in English?
Yeah, actually in both English and Hindi. We will air both the promos. The English one will be for the overseas market and other for major cities in India.

SALMAN KHAN INTERVIEW

Bollywood’s popular superstar Salman Khan has been enjoying new levels of success recently. Last year saw his breakthrough performance in the box office smash Tere Naam perfectly complimented with a special appearance in the family blockbuster Baghban. Of course the usual controversies surrounding his romantic affairs and manic lifestyle have somewhat overshadowed these achievements, but Salman is hoping his string of new releases will prove a point to harsh critics! In this interview he discusses the forthcoming film Garv…

Ques: Is this the first time you are playing a cop in the movie?
Salman: No, I played cop in the movie “Pathar Ke Phool” which my father wrote for me. But that was slightly early for me. This is the right time when the “Wardi” looks damn good on me. Once your walk is right, your costume is right; more than half the battle is won. You look your character and the battle is won.

Ques: Can you tell us a little bit about your character “Arjun Ranawat” in the movie “Garv”?
Salman: He is a guy who is angry, gentle, soft, cool, hard, merciful, ruthless, correct, honest and very lovable. That’s “Arjun Ranawat”.

Ques: Is he Romantic?
Salman: Yah he is a man with confidence in just about everything. But when it comes to love, he is shy. He loves his girl, and cannot tell her. He can shoot a person but when it comes to telling a person that he loves her, he cannot do that. He will sit back and look at her, smile at her, give her attitude and walk out of there.

Ques: In the movie “Garv” is your character based on a guy who fights against the system?
Salman: Pretty much! That’s what the film is about. A guy who stands against the system and can’t let evil take over the good. And so he fights for that.

Ques: Is this an action film?
Salman: Yes. It’s an action film. There are films in which there is action just for the sake of it. But in this film we have meaningful action. The action is hard-core. We have done a lot of shoot out scenes in the movie and there is also a lot of hand-to-hand action. There is one scene that is brutal, but we had to keep it that way to show what these people had done. So, there is action backed by emotion. Once that is there in the movie the action becomes ten times more powerful; you don’t need any technique, you don’t need cables and stuff like that. What you need is just one solid shot.

Ques: Tell us something about Puneet - the director of “Garv”.
Salman: He is Brilliant. There are very few people in this film industry who are competent, and know each and every aspect of film-making. He used to be an actor and he has done Martial Arts too. He is a humorous guy, technically brilliant and very straight. He has amazing script sense. He has put all this in the movie. That makes him a very complete director.

Ques: How is it working with Shilpa?
Salman: I have done about 6-7 movies with Shilpa and we are best of friends. There are no ego problems. No hassles, so it’s like friends working together. It’s amazing working with her. As an actress, she is damn good, dances very well, on screen she is phenomenon and has a huge fan following.

Ques: Who is your favourite co-star?
Salman: I like working with who ever I work with. If I don’t like somebody I may not want to work with that person. But if I have to work with a person, I will make sure that I like that person. My Grand father always says that “Maan nafrat se nahi, pyar se bhadtha hai”. So once you do a movie, you have to get along with the whole team. Even if you are pretending in the beginning, after 5-10 days you start liking that person.

Ques: Who is your favourite actor?
Salman: I like working with Sanjay Dutt. I have done one film with Sunny and its amazing working with him. I have worked with a lot of people. They say that Anil Kapoor is the most difficult to work with. But I think he is the coolest guy. Then Jackie Shroff. I have done two films with him and he is very hilarious. Now I am doing a film with Mithun Da. I worked with my hero Dharamji in “Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya”. Working with Amitabh Bacchan in “Baaghban” was good fun.

Ques: What excites you about a role, whether it is the script or something else?
Salman: Since my father is a scriptwriter, script is more important for me. Even if my role is not so exciting, if I like the script, I will do it. It’s nice working with people who can think of a good script and can write a good script.

Ques: Are you a fitness freak? I believe you cycle to your shoot. Is that true?
Salman: Yes, I cycle to my shoot. I cycle just about everywhere. I am not a fitness freak as such. It’s just that when you are 70-80 years old you should be able to walk, cycle and run a little bit. You shouldn’t be lying down on the bed and people, children and friends taking care of you. The day I stop walking that’s the day I stop living.

Arbaaz Khan speaks about Garv

Tell us about your role, in Garv.
In Garv, I play an upright, righteous police officer .He is very definite about what he wants to achieve and will give his life for his country and the department

Salman and you have been seen together in lighthearted comedy films before. How was it rubbing shoulders in a film where the two of you have intense roles?
Yes I agree we are doing something different together this time. Earlier we were together in comedies and were pitted against each other. Here we are doing intense roles, and are on the same side. We believe in the same values, we have the same intensity and most importantly both characters are important in the department.
It is great working with Salman, not just because he is my brother but also because he is a great actor.

Did it help to have your brother playing the main protagonist?
I don't think so. Obviously there are advantages, of having your brother as the atmosphere becomes congenial and comfortable automatically, but there is no misuse or leeway. Ultimately it's the film and the script that stands out and is given importance. If the director feels that a scene from a film has to go, it goes, never mind if it has the star's brother in it. I am offered the roles, not because I am recommended, but because the director and producer feel that I suit that character. Our work and the way we do it is very professional that way.

Garv has a host of characters. Do you think your character will stand out?
Yes that's true, there are a host of characters in this film. But my character will stand out and leave an impact .I say that because there is a very good progression of my character as far as the script is concerned in this film. I think after Salman's role mine will stand out as the next most important character.

How was it working with Puneet Issar, a writer and director, as this was his first time?
Puneet started off for me as a writer first. When he narrated this script to me and explained my character, I was very happy with the detail in which the film was written. The lines and dialogues were excellent. At that time there were no cop films lined up, I thought this was a great cop movie to be a part of.
I was aware of Puneet's reputation, as a successful television director, but films is a completely different ball game. But it takes only a few hours or just a day after working with an individual to know if you are in the right hands. And with Puneet I realized that in a matter of hours.
The great thing about Puneet is that he has the technique to put his vision on film and if it were not for him as a writer-director. I probably wouldn't have done this film.

With so many big names getting into cop roles of late, from Amitabh to Akshay Kumar, now Salman, is it difficult preparing for a cop's role?
See here is where I think a writer- director becomes important. This is where he makes a distinct differentiation between the roles that have been done and what my personality is, and how I suit the character in a film. It does not work if the writer writes something, the director conceives something, and the actor ends up acting something else. That's why I prepared hard with Puneet understanding the character, how does he react, what is his behaviour, his frustration and anger about his work and with the system, and then trying to perform the same.
Films project incidents and characters in a larger than life manner, and it's upto the director and the actor to first understand the character and then depict it in such a way that is larger than life.

Your role as a villan in 'Qayamat' worked. Your hunch on this one?
I think I am bang on this one. If there is any subject I have heard in terms of detailing and work put in, this is one of the best characters I have seen.
Sometimes characters are conceived brilliantly but are not projected well enough. In Garv my character has been conceived and presented excellently. I think if there is any role that turn someone's career or get someone noticed it's these kinds of roles. Although I am not the types to put all my eggs in one basket and expect too much from one film, I would be disappointed if the film and my characters don't get a favorable response.

Did the role of a righteous cop affect you as a human being?
As an actor one tends to use a lot of your personality in a character. One tries to project his/her honesty and integrity into a character's as much as you try and imbibe from it.
It sometimes happens that you put in your personality and wish that the character possess them. You want the character to be honest and upright as you are. There are other times that you wish that you had some of the qualities that the character possesses. You are finally the instrument that projects the character. It's your body, mind, and eyes. So your personality matters. It's a mix of your personality and what you conceive about a particular role that is finally projected on screen.

The best and the worst comments you got?
People normally don't say the worst comments straight onto one's face, although they do prefer to be honest. But whatever they are, from my performance to my dance are very assorted talk floating around and not concrete opinions.
For the best comment, Ill tell you an incident that happened when I was shooting in Ooty. One of the dancer boys came upto me and requested some of my time when I returned to Mumbai as his mom wanted to meet me. I agreed and noticed that his eyes were moist. Upon asking him why, he said 'My mother wants to meet you because the character you played in Darrar, was exactly like my father.” She was amazed and moved by the resemblce and mannerisms, of my character in the film to her husband and wanted to meet me, so she could ask if I knew and understood her life! I met the old couple in Mumbai. Comments like that are better and far more satisfying than any award that an actor can get.

What do you prefer, Comedy or serious roles?
I want to do comedies. Its not an easy job to do in terms of the performance and timing. But serious roles are ones that I can synch into easily because of my personality image. I would love to do comedy but it has to be a director who understands making a comedy, so he can get a good performance out of me just like Puneet has done in this movie.

Any comments on the action of this film?
It's been very well choreographed and very precise. It's very raw, real and not been overdone, not done for the sake of it. It is executed, as the film demanded it.

How do you feel before the release of your film? Nervous, excited?
In my short career I have come to the conclusion that I wont get too excited about a film. What happens after a release dosent always go the way you think it will. The best thing is to work hard and hope for the best. Sometimes you expect results too soon after a film and are disappointed if that does not happen. I try not to get worked up about it.

After all your films and a variety of roles do you feel there's still to explore as an actor?
Oh Yeah! I am just seven-eight films old. There is so much more to do. Once you do a particular role and form an image then you want to do something else and try and break that image. Even within the same type of roles you try variations. A cop's role for example can be of different personalities for different films. There is always so much to do.

Your forthcoming films?
There's Wajeh which is a Sab Tv film and directed by Gautum Adhikari, There's Tajmahal, Aliba aur Chalees Chor and Hulchul which is a Priyadarshan film.

Puneet Issar speaks about Garv

Garv- Pride and honour. When and how did you decide about this particular script?
It was around 2002 when I had written this script. I was directing 'Jai Mata Ki' a television series for Cinevista. Then in 2002 November, we started the film. Because of Salman's accident we had to delay the film by two months.

Salman looks intense and in character. Was he always on your mind or is it after writing you decided that he would be the one?
No he wasn't on my mind when I wrote the script. My character of 'Arjun Ranawat' is a strong and silent type. He is the coolest guy at the same time the coldest.
I thought Salman suited this role after I finished writing the script. Because he is like the character, very cool yet cold. When I narrated the script to him, he really liked it and we signed him on.

As we know that you have been a director on television earlier. How different it has been doing it for the bigger screen?
Of course there is no comparison. Shooting on a negative is definitely more satisfying. A film is a film. But my passion towards my work is the same. When I was directing television, I never thought of it as a small medium. I shot my TV serials with the same passion as films and followed the same shot taking patterns.
Yes, films are definitely more satisfying.

How is it when you write and direct a film? You think it's more satisfactory than just doing either of them?
Definitely, See a film is basically a director's vision. It's his viewpoint, how he conceives it, how he see something happening. Even if somebody else writes the film, the inputs from the director has to come. I thought about this idea and me and my wife worked on the story and screenplay. Anirudh who was also my dialogue writer in 'Hindustani' another popular television series that I directed for Cinevista, wrote the dialogues, but the key lines are mine. But ultimately film-making is a team effort.

Why an action film? You think audiences can trust Puneet more on an action flick?
There's nothing like that. Infact when I was writing the script, there was no cop film ideas around. I thought this was a realistic film to make. Action films will always be there. It is finally the director's vision. Then I have Salman playing the lead as a cop, for the first time after he has matured as an actor. I believe half my battle is won there.

Directing Salman khan. How was it?
Oh, it was wonderful! We are great friends and know each other since a long time. We have even done seven-eight films together. He is very cool. For friend he is the coolest. It was great because he trust me completely as the director. Infact things that are said about him are not true. He is one of the most intelligent and matured actors around. He pretends to be carefree, but he knows everything, from the script to the continuity of a scene that we would have shot a month back.

Does it help to have a star like Salman? Or is it just an added asset?
I think Salman is too underrated as an actor. Yes, he is a very big star. But he has amazing script sense. After all he is Salim Khan's son. Salman definitely has a great aura about him. Because he believed in the script, and saw a great film shaping up, he agreed to do it. But no actor can rise above the script. A star definitely helps but at the end of the day, it's the film that counts.

How was it on the shoot? Two aggressive men, Puneet Issar and Salman khan?
(Laughs) To the contrary, everybody had a great time. I told you we are great friends. Salman and me share the same tangent of thinking. We all had a great time. Masti Mazak, First Class!

The film has been produced by Cinevistaas ltd? You and Cinevistaas go a long way?
Yes, They are my mentors; I must say that.Mr.Sunil Mehta is like an elder brother to me. He always trusted me. They (Cinevista) always respected and encouraged my vision and my thoughts. When I was working on 'Junoon', Mr Sunil Mehta always found time to listen to short stories that I wrote. Such has been their encouragement.
I did 'Hindustani' and the 'Jai Mata Ki' for them. So yes, from my directorial debut in TV to my directorial debut in films now, Cinevista and I go a long way.

Recently action films like “ Qayamat” and “Khakee” have done fairly well at the box office. Hence do you think Garv stands on a safe platform?
Not exactly. Its not any genre that works or doesn't. Its only good films or bad films. Good films will always do well. Even the best of actors in a particular genre will not do well if the film is not up to the mark. No genre is a mantra for success. We have only 'Nau ras' (nine emotions), 'Hasya ras', 'Prem Ras', 'Veer ras' being some of them. Aur raso mein ras Veer ras pradhan hota hai! I think Garv stands a good chance because it's a well-made film.

You have Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Arbaaz khan, Shilpa Shetty, and lots of other characters. So there is more to the film, than a one-man army situation.
No its definelty not a one-man show. No characters in my film are just for the sake of it. They Amrish Puri, Shilpa Shetty, Anupam Kher, Arbaaz, Mukesh Rishi all play very important parts. But ultimately you need one star, which will draw the audience to come and watch the film.
The intrigue created when Salman asks for a death wish from the judge, in a scene from the film, will have the audience hooked and no lesser star according to me can create that intrigue.

Any particular incident that you will always remember, during the making of garv?
On the day that we were scheduled to begin shoot I woke up at 5am in the morning, to prepare for a 7am shoot, only to know that salman had an accident. I rushed to meet him .He was still very cheerful about the film and assured me that we'll do a good job even if it gets delayed a bit. It's a film that we have made 'haste- khelte' otherwise.

Favorite scene?
There are many great scenes in the film, so it's difficult for me to choose one. Normally in a film if there are about two to three scenes to which the audience clap, your film is said to be through. I am confidant Garv has more that the audience will love.

How are people reacting to the film? (Reactions from the promos)
Reactions to the film have been that of intrigue. People want to know why is Salman's character asking for a death wish in the film. There is an air of suspense around it. Salman has been doing romantic and light roles. In this film he breaks that image .I am very sure he is going to walk away with a lot of awards for this film.

What has come to work better for you after the completion of the film? Your writing or your direction talent?
My direction definetly. I enjoy writing but it is in direction that you see your view and dream on celluloid. So I would say that direction is far more satisfying. I always say a director is paid for his dreams! (Chuckles)

Now that the film is over what's going to replace this passion?
My next film! I have a few films lined up after this and that is where my energies will go.

So will we see the pairing of Puneet Issar and Salman again?
Yes definitely!

With your foray into cop action movies don't you think you will be compared to Raj Kumar Santoshi and Govind Nihlani the recent cop film directors who are biggies? Is there any such pressure?
I don't think so. See, Raj Kumar Santoshi and Govind Nihalini are directors who have great reputations from past work. And reputation always brings expectation. Whereas although people know Puneet Issar the actor, an action man, Duryodhan etc., they do not know much about me as a director. As a result if they like even a small part of my work, it will be highly appreciated. I see not being in the big league as an dvantage cause the audience will come in with an open mind and there will be no expectation from reputation.

Do you see a Arjun Ranawat in you?
I certainly do! Given similar situations that Arujan Ranawat is in the film, I would react similarly to he way he reacts. Any director brings his human side, his physcology and his thinking, sometimes even his real life incidents into a film and Garv is no different.

Was Shilpa always the choice to be cast opposite Salman?
Shilpa's character in this film is that of a bar dancer. Shilpa has a very good body and she is a great dancer, both of which are pre-requisites for this role. So we decided to cast her.

Garv is sold out

It's good sign for Cinevistaas Garv-Pride and Honour that is gathering good crowds at the box office even before its release. Yes the Salman Khan starrer has opened to a strong advance booking in several cinema halls of Mumbai and Delhi cities. Tickets at Novelty cinema in Mumbai are already sold out for first three days. And this comes with the fact that the advance booking just opened on Monday morning. This reconfirms Salman's strong fan following among the masses.

In a time when a film fails to gather momentum at the box-office even after it's release, Garv just seems to be on the right track. However it has to be seen how far Garv is able to sustain it's position at the box-office.

Salman: Life is beautiful
   By: Upala KBR

Fiercely guarding his privacy and binding himself in his own private world, the best way to know Salman Khan is by watching his movies — because in is his own words — “there is a bit of me in every role I play.”

Khan is quite as charming and happy-go-lucky as the lover of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, as intensely passionate and mindless in love as the hero of Tere Naam and as honest and upright as the cop in Garv — Pride and Honour — a film to be released this Friday..

What attracted Khan to a cop’s role? – Since every second Hindi movie has the hero playing cop these days.

“See it’s not just about playing a cop that excited me in Garv. It was the script. It is about a normal citizen taking on the system. Arjun Ranawat is a cop with a family. There is so much of rubbish going on in everywhere.

This man stands up to everything,” states the actor, speaking about his role.

Khan plays a  cop after 13 years. “Not 13 but eight years ,” he corrects quickly. “It was in Auzaar last that I had played a cop but I was not in uniform,” he adds.

So what’s the difference in playing a cop in Garv? “The cop’s honesty,” comes Khan’s pat  reply. “Arjun is honest, straight-forward and non-corruptible. In such times when you have large families, low salaries and you have to satisfy everyone’s needs there are too many temptations coming your way. So you succumb to them. But inspite of facing so many problems this guy doesn’t take money,” Khan remarks as if he
had deliberated on his role for long.

But Khan’s character in Tere Naam was quite restless too. “No way! Tere Naam and Garv are two different films. Tere Naam is a  film I would tell everyone to watch and forget. In real life you can’t be a character like that. It’s unrealistic. But I would tell people to be an Arjun because if there’s something wrong with the system you have to stand up to it,” Khan explains.

“I have tried to make the Garv character have other light sides to him too. He’s a romantic guy, there are comic touches but not buffoonery. Garv has everything — romance, action, intensity, drama and action. Exciting hand-to-hand combat action. The cops are like how you see in American films, cool and smart! There are no weird dialogues, it’s a clean film, realistic film made on a big, scale.”

When first-time director, Puneet Issar came to him with the script of Garv Khan has been told it would be a six-hour narration. “There was so much of material that Puneet had amassed on the film. But I told Puneet to make it four,” remembers Khan. “So he has taken the highlights and made this film. It’s the most sincere film a person can make.”

So where does he draw his character’s from? His real life persona and tragedies. “There’s a part of me in every film of mine. I won’t deny that,” says Khan. “But I also tend to draw from the people I meet in my life, my friends, people I like or dislike. They could be even Amitji on screen. But I will play it my way.”

Does he prefer to do comedy to serious roles? “There’s nothing like that. I take up something on the spur of the moment. I prefer to do a film like Hello Brother where I have to do much more comedy than a Judwaa which is situational and I hardly have anything to do. It depends on my mood.

It’s like when I am in a good mood everything looks good but when I am in a bad one nothing satisfies me no matter what I do. I can’t separate my personal from my professional life. I envy the people who can do that and don’t care a damn about anything. I can’t do that. I carry my emotions on my sleeve…and on-screen.”

Does he ever feel that life has treated him badly? “No life has been beautiful for me. No regrets. I would be the most ungrateful guy to crib and complain about what I have gone through. I am blessed with what God has given me. I have seen so much of pain and misery in what others have gone through that I don’t mind. No matter what you have gone through you should not complain…”

What about marriage? A shadow darkens his face. His privacy has been breached. For the first time (he has patiently answered everything) there’s a flicker of irritation in his voice though he controls it. “It’s not in my hands,” he says blandly. Apart from others, obviously it’s a question he has asked himself plenty of times. And is yet to come up with an answer.

Watch Garv on TV before it releases

In a first-of-its-kind promotional strategy, the makers of Garv have tied up with Star Gold where they would premiere the film on the channel before it hits the big screens. Yes, Garv will be screened on Star Gold on July 8, a day before it releases in theatres on July 9, 2004. But wait, the channel will just screen 15 minutes of the film. The viewers will thereby get a glimpse and taste of what the film is all about and decide whether to watch it on the big screen or not.

The film's actress Shilpa Shetty and supporting actor Arbaaz Khan will host the show, which is also giving away some free movie tickets for the Sunday show. This kind of curtain raiser for the film will be bigger than what a trailer or a preview or the making of the film has to show and if successful may click a trend of sorts. Also most probably the 15-minute screening may end at some interesting turning point of the film to build up your curiosity.

Star Gold, the official TV partner of the film, will beam 15 minutes of Garv on July 8 at 8 pm.

The latest news on Dil Churake Chal Diye is that the title has been changed yet again. From Dil Churake Chal Diye to Shaadi Karke Phans Gaya Yaar.

The film is mostly complete and one more song is yet to be shot on Shilpa and Salman.

It is still waiting for a release date but is expected to release this year.

What's Amrita Arora doing in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi?

Amrita Arora has a special appearance in David Dhawan's Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. And no, this time it's not an item number. The sister of Malaika Arora Khan plays the ex-lover of the brother of Arbaaz Khan in the film. In short, Amrita plays Salman's ex-girlfriend in the film who ditches him mid-ways after which Salman falls in for Priyanka.

Does that mean Salman settles down for Amrita all over again in the end giving Akshay chance for Priyanka? Nah, we are not saying anything, wait for the movie.

Interview on garv...

Is this the first time you are playing a cop in the movie?
No, I played cop in the movie "Pathar Ke Phool" which my father wrote for me. But that was slightly early for me. This is the right time when the "Wardi" looks damn good on me. Once your walk is right, your costume is right; more than half the battle is won. You look your character and the battle is won.

Can you tell us a little bit about your character "Arjun Ranawat" in the movie "Garv"?
He is a guy who is angry, gentle, soft, cool, hard, merciful, ruthless, correct, honest and very lovable. That's "Arjun Ranawat".

Is he Romantic?
Yah he is a man with confidence in just about everything. But when it comes to love, he is shy. He loves his girl, and cannot tell her.
He can shoot a person but when it comes to telling a person that he loves her, he cannot do that. He will sit back and look at her, smile at her, give her attitude and walk out of there.

In the movie "Garv" is your character based on a guy who fights against the system?

Pretty much! That's what the film is about. A guy who stands against the system and can't let evil take over the good. And so he fights for that.

Is this an action film?
Yes. It's an action film.
Once that is there in the movie the action becomes ten times more powerful; you don't need any technique, you don't need cables and stuff like that. What you need is just one solid shot.

What kind of movies do you like?
I like comedy and romantic movies.

What about action movies?
Yah in action I like Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Mr. Amitabh Bacchan's movies.

Tell us something about Puneet - the director of "Garv".
He is Brilliant. There are very few people in this film industry who are competent, and know each and every aspect of film-making. He used to be an actor and he has done Martial Arts too.
He is a humorous guy, technically brilliant and very straight. He has amazing script sense. He has put all this in the movie. That makes him a very complete director.

How is it working with Shilpa?
I have done about 6-7 movies with Shilpa and we are best of friends. There are no ego problems. No hassles, so it's like friends working together. It's amazing working with her. As an actress, she is damn good, dances very well, on screen she is phenomenon and has a huge fan following.

Who is your favourite co-star?
I like working with who ever I work with. If I don't like somebody I may not want to work with that person. But if I have to work with a person, I will make sure that I like that person. My Grand father always says that "Maan nafrat se nahi, pyar se bhadtha hai". So once you do a movie, you have to get along with the whole team. Even if you are pretending in the beginning, after 5-10 days you start liking that person.

Who is your favourite actor?
I like working with Sanjay Dutt. I worked with my hero Dharamji in "Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya". Working with Amitabh Bachchan in "Baaghban" was good fun.

What excites you about a role, whether it is the script or something else?
Since my father is a scriptwriter, script is more important for me. Even if my role is not so exciting, if I like the script, I will do it. It's nice working with people who can think of a good script and can write a good script.

Are you a fitness freak? I believe you cycle to your shoot. Is that true?
Yes, I cycle to my shoot. I cycle just about everywhere. I am not a fitness freak as such. It's just that when you are 70-80 years old you should be able to walk, cycle and run a little bit. You shouldn't be lying down on the bed and people, children and friends taking care of you. The day I stop walking that's the day I stop living.

What inspired you to become an actor?
Actually, I really don't know because I never wanted to be an actor. I wanted to be a director. When I used to go to people with my scripts people used to say that why do you want to be a director, you should be an actor. I was not getting any work as a director as I was a small guy, not very serious about his work, and directors at that time were 50-60 years old and looked very mature. And no one would trust me with that much of money. Since I had to work, so I started modelling. I joined acting classes, riding classes and everything. Eventually, I signed a film.

Can you tell us in brief about "Garv"?
It's a film based on a very honest cop. He has a family - a sister, a mother and a friend who is a Muslim. And how two honest guys in that team get stuck and cornered by dishonest guys, dishonest cops, dishonest politicians and the janta who don't have the will to stand up to anyone, who cannot take stands in life. This is basically what "Garv" is all about.
This guy fights against all odds & against the dishonest people. There are a lot of temptations, a lot of power but he is not misusing them at all. He is funny and has a good sense of humour. He is ruthless, yet very gentle, loving and caring. He has no mercy but gets merciful.
All these qualities are very contradictory, but I think these are the right qualities a man should have. He should have love as well as hatred. You are born with these qualities. But the way you use them, to what extent you take them and on whom do you use them with is totally up to you. If somebody is coming after my family I won't say, "theek hai, aap maar do". I will make sure that I reach that person before he reaches my family. So for that person this man is the most dangerous, ruthless man, who has no mercy for them. And to his own family, he is the most gentle, loving, and caring. This is "Arjun Ranawat."

What is the message you are sending out in the film? Why should people come and watch the movie?
There's no preaching in this film. It's a good film and you have amazing action. Out of all odds your hero emerges as a good guy. When you come out of the theatre you want to be like him. This guy is a brave guy, he takes a stand, doesn't take nonsense. Someone watching the film gets inspired by that, more than enough. Because these things stay! If he can do it, so can I. that's the reason even when I did "Tere Naam". I said whatever, do not follow the character. Sometimes the films that you do, you want to give out a message that "be like that and in some films it is like do not be like that." This film, be like "Arjun Ranawat."

Eros Entertainment dumps Garv

Eros Entertainment, the overseas distributor of Garv - Pride and Honour has decided to opt out of the same citing delay as the reason.

The agreement between Eros Entertainment and Cinevistaas Limited dated July 16, 2003 has been terminated by Eros through an official written communication by the company. Explaining the delay, Cinevistaas have said that Eros Entertainment was not ready to release Garv thirty days after the release of Main Hoon Naa as Dev was already scheduled for release.

Cricketers in 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'

It was meant to be one big secret, but not anymore! Producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director David Dhawan have decided to do away with the usual humdrum ending for their Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra starrer MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI.

Besides the three lead players, guess who participated in the picturization of the climax in Bangalore recently? Noted cricketers Kapil Dev, Navjot Singh Siddhu, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Mohammed Kaif, Ashish Nehra, Parthiv Patel and Srinath. "The climax of the film is on a cricket pitch, hence the participation of cricketers," MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI director David Dhawan informs me.

While the promotions of MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI on television have already gathered momentum, the enterprising producer of the film has now come up with a 64-page palm-sized book, which gives an insight into this love triangle, besides tips on how to woo a woman. The pics of the three stars in various moods only increase the curiosity towards the film.

Meanwhile, David is all geared up to start shooting of the Salman Khan, Sushmita Sen, Katrina Kaif, Arshad Warsi and Rajpal Yadav starrer [not titled yet] from July onwards. Produced by Dhilin Mehta, Seema Kar and Sohail Khan, the film has music by Himesh Reshammiya.

Sallu mian's brat image doesn't do justice to his real self, say his co-stars and director

Move over Salman Khan. With the media going ballistic against Kaizad Gustad, Salman's got a serious contender for the spot of being controversy's blue-eyed boy. Three of his films — Dil Churaka Chal Diye, Garv and Phir Milenge — are on air. And the usually reticent and unpredictable Salman is hogging the limelight again and this time, for all good reasons.

One wonders whether this is the same Salman who had snapped back when someone had asked how he reacted to the way media had tainted his image. Irritated with the question, he had said, "I don't care. I've lived the 36/37 years of my life just the way I want to. I don't think about what others think about me. In any case, a lifetime isn't enough to understand oneself. So how does it matter what others think about me?"

Salman might not care about what the baggage the world carries about him, but his co-stars and director are full of his praise. Bhoomika Chawla, his co-star in Tere Naam and Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha , is very happy with his behaviour to a newcomer like her. Shilpa Shetty, his co-star in three of his forthcoming releases, said, "The media has rubbed him the wrong way. When situations force a person to hit the wall, it's most natural for anyone to behave that way. Salman is one of the most underrated actors of Bollywood. He can carry off those difficult roles in pink pants so easily."

Even on the personal front, Salman hasn't changed as a person, she said. "He's such a great human being. He does so much for children but never talks about it to the media. He has been a great friend and has stood by my family through thick and thin," she added. In fact, it was Shilpa who was in a way instrumental in getting Salman play the role of Rohit in Phir Milenge . "Salman was with Shilpa when I had called her up to check out some details about her costumes. Shilpa passed on the phone to him and he asked me whether I had cast someone as Rohit. When I said that stars weren't willing to do the role, he said "you haven't asked me!" I offered him the role immediately and Salman answered in the affirmative," recalled director Revathy.

Way back in the early 90s, Revathy had acted with Salman in Love. "I'm slightly elder to him. He had just done Maine Pyar Kiya then. This time around, I was directing him. He is good at heart, always punctual on the sets and very involved with the film," she added.

Apparently, Salman has been so involved with the film that he has even called Revathy up in Chennai to put in his suggestions. "Sometimes I'd say we will make another film together and incorporate all the suggestions. He took it very sportingly," she added.

Punctual, professional and passionate at heart. In an industry where stars are happy to claw even one's friend down, these spontaneous words of praise just go on to prove that it's time for Salman to court the rainbow too!

After a delay, it now seems that everything has fallen into place and the film is finally set to roll later this month in London. Salman Khan, who's just completed a schedule in Russia, will be going to London to shoot for the project. Besides Salman, the makers of 'Marigold' have roped in actress Ali Larter for the title role. She will start shooting once she wraps up the shooting of her current film, 'A Lot Like Love', with Demi Moore’s darling, Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet. Now that’s what we call going truly global. May all of this baghbaan’s flowers bloom like this always.

Now Salman film festival

It all began with Sanjay Dutt having three releases back to back -- MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. [December 19, 2003], L.O.C. [December 26, 2003] and PLAN [January 9, 2004]. Sanju's fourth release, RUDRAKSH, opened in February.

Then the Big B had two releases [KHAKEE, AETBAAR] on the same day -- January 23.

Shah Rukh Khan also faced a similar situation when the much-delayed YEH LAMHE JUDAAI KE [April 9] was released three weeks before his home-production MAIN HOON NA hit the marquee [April 30].

Similarly, Abhishek Bachchan seems to have had three films releasing in three consecutive weeks -- RUN [May 14], YUVA [May 21] and HUM TUM [May 28; the Jr. B has a special appearance in the film].

Akshay Kumar also finds himself in a similar situation. While POLICE FORCE opened on May 28 and AAN is scheduled on June 4, yet another film starring the actor, MERI BIWI KA JAWAB NAHIN, has been announced for June 11.

The month of June will witness three Big B starrers releasing one after the other -- DEV on June 11, LAKSHYA on June 18 and DEEWAAR on June 25.

Hold on, this is not the end of the story... We now have three Salman Khan starrers scheduled for release in July. While GARV is slated for release on July 9 and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI is confirmed for July 30, there's a strong possibility that PHIR MILENGE will also make it in July.

There seems to be a glut of top actors' films in the coming weeks. Will the cinegoers rejoice at the prospect of watching so many films of their fav actors in such a short span, only time will tell!

By Taran Adarsh, June 01st, 2004

The promos of David Dhawan’s next venture, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi is on air and is being liked by one and all. The audience will see Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar together for the first time and according to the sources, Salman is shown as unlucky-in-love image in this comedy thriller. By the way, after the success of Munnabhai MBBS, Murder and Main Hoon Na, ‘M’ is the latest lucky alphabet for the industry thus everyone is expecting Mujhse Shaadi Karogi to take ‘M’ factor to greater height.

For all those guys who are wondering where Salman has been of late, here's news from Russia . For that's where he's been the past few months, shooting for his home production `Lucky'. He will be back in town by month's end to gear up for four mega releases. Starting with `Garv', he will follow it up with Sajid  Nadiadwala 's laugh riot, `Mujhse Shaadi Karoge', followed by Boney Kapoor's comedy flick `No Entry'. And coming back to his long stay in the cold climes of Russia , we wonder how he will cope with Mumbai heat. But then as Sallu supporters would say, a Sallu is garam anywhere! Now you know how he gets `lucky' each time?

MUMBAI: A sessions court on Wednesday put off till May 11 the appeal filed by the Maharashtra government against a lower court order allowing Bandra magistrate to conduct the trial of Bollywood actor Salman Khan in the hit-and-run case.
Principal Judge RR Vachha decided to hear the matter on May 11, as he was preoccupied with other cases.
Salman is facing the charge of killing one person and injuring four by ramming his vehicle into a shop in Bandra on September 28, `02 . Chief metropolitan magistrate RD Gate had earlier rejected the state's petition challenging the jurisdiction of Bandra court to try Salman in the rash-and-negligent driving case. The state had contended Bandra magistrate was not competent to conduct the trial.
Being aggrieved, the state filed an appeal in a sessions court.
Salman opposed state's appeal through his lawyer Dipesh Mehta, saying it was trying to abuse the process of law and delay the trial. The actor pleaded the state had not raised the jurisdiction issue when charges were framed against him on October 6, `03 .
last year, and also when the Supreme Court had directed Bandra magistrate to try him. It is now challenging the jurisdiction of the trial court only to delay the trial.
The prosecution pleaded Bandra magistrate SY Sishode was not competent to conduct the trial as he had earlier recorded statements of three witnesses in this case. Under section 164, CrPC, such a magistrate had to transfer the case to other court for trial, it argued.

 Salman: Khan you beat it!
AFSANA AHMED
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Salman Khan isn't all smiles to hear that he has bounced back with Tere Naam. "There was an impression that Salman Khan's got no work," he drawls, "but in reality at that point I didn't want to work, as my mind was diverted into other things." And then he slowly starts smiling. "But when he decided to work again, he came back."

Sallu says his intention of signing a film earlier depended on lot of things. Like, he signed films for money, "during the Suryavanshi time". But he is grateful that his fans stood by him in all phases of his life. "I am blessed to have such diehard fans," he says.

He may deny, but Sallu's luck is smiling again. His Hollywood aspiration, Marigold , is finally taking shape with a new actress, Alison Larter.

Salman, presently in Russia, shooting for his home production, Lucky , says Marigold will take off in the middle of 2004. "We are starting the film soon after Lucky , which is nearing completion," he explains.

"Unlike the general impression, I was positive about Marigold. I didn't feel the need to talk about it, as things were getting finalised."

Though things are speeding up for him professionally, Sallu doesn't believe in the concept of hiring a Hollywood agent. "If I am destined to work in more Hollywood films I will," he says. "Otherwise it's your work that needs to speak for people to approach you. Like Willard Godard did after he followed my movies for the last six years."

Besides this, Sallu is also readying up his home production, Ramayana, where he will play Lord Ram. And if anybody, specially some fanatics, who have resented him playing Ram, Sallu doesn't care a hoot. "I will definitely play Ram. What's wrong in it?" he asks.

"Salman Khan has a Hindu mother. If that's the issue. Anyway, I don't think anybody will have objection. Even if they do, that person is disgusting and he doesn't make any difference in my life".

The film Ramayana , he says, will tell the story up to Ram's return from his exile. "It will be on the lines of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings , with its spectacular and grandeur.  It's both for children and adults," explains the actor.

His other film Bajirao Mastani with Sanjay Leela Bhansali starts next Jan. "I have heard a lot of stories about Bajirao when we were in school. It will be fun to don that role now."

Sallu is also looking forward to his other releases like Garv and Lucky . "In Garv, I play a cop. The film doesn't preach." Interestingly, Sallu who always had problems with the police force, is now playing one of them and he says he will play it from the heart. And Lucky is a bilingual film for the international market.

And what's happening to Pritish Nandy's Sahib Biwi Aur Gulam? "I don't know as yet. I said yes to it," he says. Sallu, who hasn't seen the original version, however, prefers to play the role of Sahib than the Gulam.

And when's Bollywood's eligible bachelor tying the knot? "Everybody says I should do it now. But I don't know when. I believe in the institution of marriage."

MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Salman Khan on Monday opposed the appeal filed by the Maharashtra government against a lower court order allowing Bandra magistrate to conduct his trial in the hit-and-run case.
Salman's lawyer Dipesh Mehta pleaded that the state's appeal was "abuse" of law and an attempt to delay the trial. The appeal came up for hearing before principal judge R R Vachha, who took Salman's reply on record and deferred the matter to May 20 for arguments.
The actor has been on trial for killing one person and injuring four others by ramming his car into a shop in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002. The supreme court had, on December 18, asked the court in Bandra to go ahead with the case and decide during the course of trial whether the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was applicable to the actor or not.
The prosecution, however, raised objection in the trial court saying the same magistrate had earlier recorded statements of three witnesses.
Section 164 (6) of the crpc provides that such a magistrate should refer the statements to another magistrate who is conducting the trial. The supreme court gave a major reprieve to Salman by directing the Bandra magistrate to try him for charges excluding "culpable homicide not amounting to murder" in a hit-and-run case which attracts ten years in jail.
The apex court held that the sessions court order framing this charge and high court order quashing it were not tenable in law as this question could be decided at the stage of the trial and not before.

 Salman Khan exempted...

MUMBAI: A local court on Thursday exempted actor Salman Khan from appearance in a hit-and-run case for a day and deferred the matter to April 12 as Maharashtra government has filed an appeal against the order of the chief metropolitan magistrate allowing Bandra magistrate to conduct the trial.

    Mujhse Shaadi Karogi complete...

The entire shooting of Nadiadwala Grandson entertainment's, 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', is now complete and the dubbing has started.
Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by David Dhawan, the film pairs two of India's hottest box-office stars today, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar (together for the first time), along with Priyanka Chopra. The movie was sold out across India on the day of its launching and is one of the hottest awaited movies of 2004, in the distribution circle.

The film has music by Sajid-Wajid (previously by Anu Malik) and is due for release on July 16th.

Salman Khan: Generous Giant

Macho man Salman Khan is known for his heart of gold. The actor recently donated a helluva lot of money (we won't say how much) to St. Anthony's old age home. We hear that Salman was gifted a car at some awards function. This he sold and the money he got for it was directed towards charity. Though he is known more for being on the wrong side of the law, Salman has of late been on the right side of things. From hunting big bucks, the actor is now known for donating big bucks instead.

Numerologists give 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' thumbs up!

Mumbai, Mar.23 : Numerologists have already given David Dhawan's 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' the proverbial green signal. The arithmetic that was used to arrive at the conculsion was simple. For those who have difficulty in following the logic, here is the maths. For all the three lead stars and also the producer's birthday total up to 9. While Sajid Nadiadwala's birthday is on 18th Feb (1+8=9) Akshay Kumar's is 9th September, Priyanka Chopra's on 18th July and Salman Khan on 27th December. All these dates add up to nine, which is considered as a lucky number. The only small hitch is that director David Dhawan's birthday totals up to 7(16th August). However, that is not a problem either since seven is taken as a lucky number too.

Salman - An obsessed lover

After making two films with Salman Khan - SANAM BEWAFA and CHAAND KA TUKDAA - Saawan Kumar is all set to start his third film with the actor.
After making CHAAND KA TUKDAA [Salman, Sridevi], the veteran film-maker tried his hand at a number of films, including DIL PARDESI HO GAYAA, which was released a few months ago.
The director and actor team have decided to join hands yet again. “Salman has been gracious enough to agree to work in my new project,” Saawan tells me, “However, we've yet to work out the modalities, which includes the dates and the other formalities.”
Will it be a Muslim social, like Saawan and Salman's smash hit SANAM BEWAFA? “No, it's not,” Saawan is quick to clarify, “It's a present-day love story. It tells the story of a man who can go to extremes to win the love of his beloved.”
How did the idea originate? And was it Salman's suggestion to make a love story? “Well, the idea was God sent, you can say. It just occurred to me one fine morning. And now that I am discussing the genre of the film, I'd wish to add that it would be amongst the greatest love stories of all times,” Saawan sounds more than optimistic.
Who'd play Salman's beloved in the film? “That is to be finalized. I am not sure whether we'd cast a new face or an established actress. A decision will be arrived at after I discuss it with Salman,” Saawan divulges.
Here's hoping that the two recreate the magic of SANAM BEWAFA.

Tapori Number in Garv

The shoot for the last schedule of Cinevistaas’s Garv at the Andheri Sports Complex was a song picturisation of a tapori number ‘Khaya peeya kuch nahin glass thoda barah aana’.

The song was being shot on Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Akansha. Present were the producers Sunil Mehta and Prem Krishen besides music directors Sajid-Wajid.

As choreographer Ganesh Acharya went through the rehearsals with his dancers, Akansha kept steps with them. Since dancing comes easily to  Shetty, she preferred to wait in the make-up van for Khan. “I think he is coming on a cycle,”said Shetty.

It was almost 11 pm when Salman trooped into the hall in his cycling gear. A 10-minute rehearsal and Khan was in his make-up van readying for the shot. At midnight when the shoot began he promised: “I will be here till 5 am and complete the shoot.”

Garv directed by Punit Issar is a cop drama. It will release post the elections.

Phir Milenge

For all his brawn, most people know that Salman Khan has a kind heart. But one person who can vouch for this is actress Revathi (better know for directing Mitr: My Friend). When Revathi approached Khan to star in her second film Phir Milenge, he immediately said yes, without thinking for a second. Of course, so did Shilpa Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan.

A small-budget film written by Atul Sabharwal, Phir Milenge has been shot in only six months and is scheduled for a May release.

Produced by Percept Picture Company (Percept D’Mark’s film division), Phir Milenge is a triangular love story. Shilpa will play an AIDS patient, while Salman has been cast in the role of her boyfriend and Abhishek as her lawyer.

And before you brand this an art film, think again. “It’s is not an art film at all,” says Rauf Ahmed, creative director (events), who also looks into the films division of Percept D’ Mark. He adds, “Percept is producing 15 films this year, the first of which is Phir Milenge. There are also other projects under discussion. We’re looking at doing films with Priyadarshan, Vishal Bharadwaj, Gulzar and Tigmanshu Dhulia.”

         ''I'm politically incorrect''
   By: Shaheen Parkar
   March 12, 2004

Salman Khan has just finished shooting for actress-turned-filmmaker Revathy’s (Mitr-My Friend) next project Phir Milenge. This film was shot in a start-to-finish schedule.

“Revathy wanted to keep everything low-profile and not divulge too much about it,” says Khan. “We completed the film in two months with a major portion shot in the South.”

What makes Phir Milenge special for Khan, besides his old association with Revathy (he co-starred with her in Love), is the fact that he plays an AIDS patient in the film. “It is the love story of an AIDS patient. Filmmakers have to take up such issues. We take on cancer, heart attacks all the time in our films, so why not AIDS? There is no better way to create awareness about what is rampant than through mainstream cinema.”

The film also stars Shilpa Shetty playing an ad woman and Abhishek Bachchan. “It is a very moving story with Revathy’s special touch to it,” says Khan who is also gung-ho about being a cop in Cinevistaas’s Garv. “I played a policeman more than 10 years ago in Patthar Aur Phool. All these years I never did a cop’s role and have forgotten what it was like doing one.

When director Punit Issar approached me for Garv, there was no way I could refuse. Looking at his sheer size I knew I had to says yes otherwise the consequences would have been disastrous! In Garv I play Arjun, an upright, straightforward, no-nonsense cop but there is also a very humane side to him.”

Besides Garv there is also Sajid Nadiadwala’s Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri’s Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha lined up for Khan who can’t see himself, like several of the industry folks presently, jumping onto the political bandwagon.

“No political party would approach me, I am politically so incorrect. But it’s a good thing that film people are joining politics. For that much-desired change, they can play an important role. They have the support of the media and the industry.”

Being politically correct for Khan entails doing something for the neighbourhood first. “If I had to do something I would start with Bandra where I live; make it the best place in Mumbai and only after I feel I have done something for Bandra, I would move to the neighbouring Khar-Danda area. I prefer doing one thing at a time and at the moment it is only films for me,” adds Khan who prefers film over theatre or television because: “Theatre involves memorising lines, the pace of TV is exhausting. With films I can report two hours late and still get away with it.” (see box). This despite the fact that Khan cycles to his shoots in Mumbai to save time on traffic snarls. “No one recognises me. I wear a cap and bicycle shorts. And I love cutting lanes and speeding off.”

SALMAN LOOKING FORWARD FOR 2004

Salman Khan is maintaining a low profile of late, but the actor, who bounced back with TERE NAAM last year, is all geared up for an eventful year ahead.

To start with, the actor will have two releases in the coming months - Cinevistaas' GARV [directed by actor turned director Puneet Issar] and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI [directed by David Dhawan], in which he teams with Akshay Kumar for the first time.

“It's Salman's best performance to date,” states Puneet Issar. Those who have viewed the rushes of the film endorse Puneet's statement completely. Incidentally, GARV is supposed to be the most expensive Salman starrer to date. Reportedly, Cinevistaas have spent a fortune in the making of the film.

The second Salman film to release this year is Sajid Nadiadwala's MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, directed by David Dhawan. After JUDWAA [David Dhawan] and HAR DIL JO PYAAR KAREGA [Raj Kanwar], both produced by Sajid, the Salman camp insists that the actor is in great form in this flick as well.

Salman has much more to look forward to in 2004…

Besides these two films, the actor teams up with two of his favourites yet again in their forthcoming films - Sooraj R. Barjatya and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

After starting their careers with Salman [Sooraj's debut-making film was MAINE PYAR KIYA, while Bhansali made his debut with KHAMOSHI - THE MUSICAL], the directors opted for other actors in their subsequent films. But both Sooraj and Bhansali have teamed up with Salman yet again.

While Sooraj's project will be a family drama [the Rajshris aren't too willing to reveal the genre of the film at this stage], Bhansali's film with Salman - BAJIRAO MASTANI - will roll soon after the director completes work on BLACK [Amitabh Bachchan].

Salman Raises Money For Charity @ Zee Awards

The awards ceremony which brought Indian and Pakistani artistes together on stage had the right sense of national bonding, was high on action and had oodles of humour thrown in.

It began with host Jaaved Jaaferi unveiled, doing a headstand. It set the tone for the evening : it was going to be a different awards. Jaaferi sparkled, buoyed by a fabulous script from Kiran Kotriyal, the best in the business. Karan Johar in a new avatar as a host along with the bubbly Juhi Chawla, who broke into song and her vocal act would have done even an Alka Yagnik proud, was par excellence.

Salman Khan, who came and auctioned a Zee Cine Award for a cool 450,000 dirhams, raising money for a home for the aged in Mumbai, India. His appeal that children should look after their aged parents, played on Dubai's elite and they opened their purses willingly. Pakistan stand up comic Omar Shariff first on his own, and then later with India's Shekhar Suman had the audience rolling in the aisles with his tremendously punny and funny one liners. Another highlight for attendees was the joint performance for the finale on stage by Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Juhi Chawla, Lara Dutta. They were all dancing for Yash 'Tom' Johar who got the Lifetime Achievement Award.

One act to kill for was Jaaved Jaaferi's take off on Gujarati choreographer Kamlesh Patel's view of the contribution that various actors' dancing styles have made to society.

Dubai viewers today will not be able to forget Shah Rukh Khan's audience involving act when he called on stage four fans to dance with him. Neeru, Natasha Puri and two Dubai-ites handled themselves gracefully with the Khan and were the envy of all present.

The show's highlight was the camaraderie that the film artistes from India and Pakistan displayed. "We hope that the two film industries can work together to build harmonious relations between the two nations," quipped almost every artiste.

The state government filed an appeal in the Sessions Court yesterday asking for actor Salman Khan's trial in the 2002 hit-and-run case to be transferred from the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate court. Public prosecutor R V Kini said the application will be heard on March 10.

The prosecution has contended that Salman's trial be transferred to another magistrate as S Y Shisode of the Bandra court was barred under the law from continuing to preside over the case since he had recorded statements of three witnesses in the case earlier.

The prosecutor said that under the Criminal Procedure Code, if the statements were later denied during the trial, the magistrate would also have to be examined as a witness himself. In that case, it is necessary that the case be transferred from Magistrate Shisode to another magistrate.

Salman's lawyer Dipesh Mehta said this was just a time-consuming tactic adopted by the prosecution. He said Shisode had recorded the statements in September 2002 and the police hadn't raised this objection in the Sessions Court, the high court or appealed in the Supreme Court.

Advocate Mehta said that when the magistrate framed the charges against Salman on October 6, 2003, the state didn't have any objection to the magistrate trying the case.

The prosecution had earlier approached Chief Metropolitan Magistrate R D Gate. On January 21, 2004, Gate rejected the government's plea.

On September 27, 2002, Khan allegedly rammed his car into the pavement outside a bakery at Bandra. One person was killed and four were injured.

Khan allegedly fled from the scene. He was arrested on October 7, 2002, under Section 304 (Part II) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, on September 3, 2003, the Bombay High Court directed that Khan be tried under Section 304 A of the IPC.

BOLLYWOOD STARS SHOW THEIR JALWA
BY ILYAS QURESHI

6 February 2004

Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan finally managed to show his Jalwa (rare appearance) to the Press at the Al Amira Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Dubai late Wednesday evening instead of the late afternoon scheduled meeting. He arrived some 45 minutes late but then we can't blame the busy star who was performing at the Stardust Cine Awards on Tuesday night in Mumbai and came straight from the airport dwarfed by beefy bodyguards. At least Salman was able to make it but Kareena Kapoor who was held up arrived here only yesterday morning.

The informal meeting seemed more like a Salman Khan fan club get-together than a serious Press conference because coverage in the following day's newspapers was next to impossible due to deadlines. Nevertheless, the Dubai paparazzi was out in full force so where the magazine scribes, sponsors and their families and children packing the hall to its full capacity.

Tusshar Kapoor, a first timer to the Dubai stage, kept in sync with other stars. He said he was excited and a stage show being a different ball game altogether he was willing to give his best. Isha Koppikar pointed out that there was more to her than the item girl tag as she now has a couple of good lead roles on hand and her movies are ready for release.

As 'outsiders' posed more questions the Press meet drifted towards an informal chat. Thanks to Salman's levelheadedness and good sense of humour he kept the gathering amused with his witty answers but managed to reveal a rather grave personal side of his by saying that he has learnt a lesson from life when he was involved in the much-publicised hit and run case in Mumbai. "My traumatic experience is a lesson for others. If a person like me can go through so much imagine the plight of an ordinary person. The best policy is to keep yourself away from such problems," advised the prodigal star.

On a female journalist's query about the secret of his good looks, Salman went on to say that there were more good-looking guys in his building. "Me and good-looking, you must be joking," said the star whose impish looks appeal to all his fans across the age barrier.

He even went on to pose a question to the invitees saying they would have branded him 'arrogant and high headed' if he had not come down to Dubai. "But my coming here is a proof that I am committed and love the Dubai audience. You will see me in my element if the audience respond well to me and I don't mind discarding my shirt to create hysteria among my young fans.

"This being a musical show I will dance to my heart's content, chat with the audience, flirt with the girls and give the guys attitude. You see I can do everything," said Salman in a lighter tone.

And he kept up his promise as his performance on Thursday evening proved. He strived hard to make the show as entertaining as possible and gave the Dubai audience what they expected from him. Lots of dance and fun. And why not? After all it was Salman's Jalwa and he made sure the audience got enough of it.

JALWA COMES TO TOWN
BY ILYAS QURESHI

3 February 2004

Come Thursday and the star-struck Dubai audience will be out there in full force to savour the Jalwa or exclusive appearance of their Bollywood heroes and heroines. It's after a long time that the big draw sextet Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Amrita Aurora, Ishaa Koppikar and the popular Pakistani band Strings will be performing live at the Al Wasl Football Stadium in Dubai.

The best part of the show is its affordability as informed by the organiser Suhail Anwar of Inneraccess Events. "This being a part of the Dubai Shopping Festival we are offering tickets for Dh50 and Dh100 so as to make it attractive to all. Never ever have tickets for such a star-studded show been sold at this rate. We want families to come down and enjoy the show in all its entirety. It's a real value for money extravaganza," says Suhail adding, "We also have round tables for corporates priced at Dh500, Dh750 and Dh1,000 in the front area and the capacity of the stadium being 18,000 we can accommodate a large number of people in the lower tickets arena which is set mere 20 meters away from the stage and has dancing area as well."

If you have been following his career closely, you would have noticed that despite his tough guy image Salman is adept at dancing too. Some of his previous movies have showcased his skills to the accompaniment of some foot-tapping music. If in Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega it was Aisa Pehli Baar then his other flick has him gyrating to Savariya in a stage sequence.

There are many more like Tere Naam, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Biwi No.1 and some shot in the outdoor locales of Switzerland and New Zealand. And when it comes to live shows Salman wins the popularity contest hands down for his impish looks which appeal to the youngsters and seniors alike. His energy on stage is remarkable as he gyrates in solo dance numbers not to mention the heat of excitement he generates when he throws his shirt to the audience.

Salman and the other artists will perform solo and duets in different combinations. Though he has not done a film with Kareena Kapoor so far, the King of Khans will team up with the leading beauty of Bollywood for a few pulsating numbers. Their chemistry on stage is to be seen to be believed assures the organiser informing that the show will end with a finale that will have all the performers making it happen on the stage.

Tusshar Kapoor, who started off on a weak note as a dancer, has managed to shed his inhibitions and now enthralls cinegoers with his trendy dance numbers. He himself enjoys dancing now and it shows in his live performances. Tusshar enjoys a rare camaraderie with Kareena thanks to their romantic pairing on the big screen. So, we can hope to see some fireworks on the Dubai stage when the two perform the Rabba Rabba, Ding Dong and Nikamma numbers.

Amrita Arora and Ishaa Koppikar have a few item numbers up their sleeves. The two dancing stars will take turns to perform their individual acts set to pulsating beats and the accompaniment of Broadway-like chorus dancers. Their repertoire includes few of the raunchy chart toppers of the time including Khallas, Ishq Samandar, Dilli Ki Thandi and Babuji while Strings will mix with the Indian stars to sing Chaye Chaye from their recent album Dhani.

The ensemble includes 30 dancers that will add to the magic on stage. Jalwa 2004 will bring the best of Bollywood's latest numbers in a  well-choreographed sequence arranged by dance master Ganesh Hegde. Each of the artists will not only be making a dramatic entry but will also be performing the numbers that they are best remembered for in recent times. The production value will be second to none with Sun, Light and Sound providing the sound and lighting effects for the show. Special pyrotechnics and fireworks will truly make it seem like the stars have come to earth.

And come the day, the audience will be thrilled by the encounter of the starry kind, delirious with joy they will be singing Hum Dil De Chuke Salman all the way to the stadium...

Gates open at 7pm and the four-hour-long show starts at 9pm. The event is sponsored by My Siemens in association with 106.2 HUM FM.
