1. Start by combing out the mane with a large comb. You may choose to wash the mane first, but don't use conditioner, for it'll make the mane slick and hard the pull and grasp.
2. Start with the longest part of the mane. Taking up an inch-wide section or less at a time, grasp the bottom of the of the hairs from the underside of the mane. (This will keep short hairs from sticking up as they grow back.)
3. Using the small pulling comb, "tease" the hair back up toward the roots by combing upward while still holding onto the ends of the mane.
4. With each upward combing, you'll be holding fewer and fewer hairs.
5. When you have only a few strands of hair left, hold the pulling comb steady and use your other hand to wrap the hairs tightly around it.
6. Pull the comb quickly toward your body. The hairs should come out easily. (If your tug moves the horse's crest, but doesn't release all the hairs, you've tried to pull too many at once; try again with fewer hairs.) Find the next longest hairs, and repeat steps 2 through 6.
