Notes Page for Literature Should Include:

 

Title – The name of the piece

Author – the name of the person who created the piece

Genre – the kind of literature it is (memoir, short story, poetry, etc.)

Perhaps sub genre, (sci-fi, historical fiction, realistic fiction, narrative poetry,

lyric poetry, etc.)

Setting – Time and Place

Characters – list all major and any significant minor characters with a short description of

each.

Plot:

• Exposition – back ground information
• Incentive Moment – the spark that starts off the action
• Rising Action – events leading up to the climax
• Climax – the most exciting part of the story, or the point at which the story takes a turn
• Falling Action – events leading away from the climax and leading to the conclusion
• Resolution/Conclusion – the last part of the piece where previous events, themes, etc. are tied up and the piece ends.

Conflict – what is the biggest problem that arises in the piece (not always applicable)

Literary Elements – Some examples include:  foreshadowing, figurative language,

imagery, simile, metaphor, alliteration, rhyme, etc.

Theme – the meaning, moral, or message of the piece.  What the author is trying to teach

the reader.
