SWBAT:  analyze motive in Pocket Full of Rye by Agatha Christie.

DO NOW:   Write an entry:  What clues did you find?  And what new vocabulary words did you find?  Review correct definitions.

DEVELOPMENT:

1.  Go over Do Now (5 min)

2.  Questions to ask about  Chapters 1 and 2: (5 min)

1.      Why was the way the secretaries reacted to Rex's death so odd?

2.      What revealed to the doctor that the poison was Taxine?

3.      Why do you think Rex had been acting so strange lately?

3.  Read Chapters 3, 4, 5 in class (14 min).  We will begin as a read aloud and then silent reading time.  Stop to discuss as necessary.

4.  Review and summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Finish reading chapters 3, 4, and 5.  2.  Write one page in writer’s notebook:

SWBAT analyze clues that develop in Agatha Christie's A Pocket Full Of Rye.

DO NOW:  In W.N.: What do you think the rye in Rex's suit pocket means?  (5 min)

DEVELOPMENT:

1.  Go over Do Now (5 min)

2.  Questions to ask about  Chapters 3, 4,  and & 5:

1.      Why is it so important to know what Rex had for breakfast?

2.      Why is Gladys so nervous? Why is Ms. Crump so mean?

3.      Why does Lance describe his family as "not devoted"?

3.  Continue read aloud of chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9.  Stop to discuss as necessary.

4.  Review/summarize.

SWBAT: analyze different reactions of different characters to events as they develop in Agatha Christie's A Pocket Full Of Rye.

DO NOW:  In W.N.: We all have family problems, money, rules, chores.  How do you deal with family problems?  Is there any similarity to what is going on in the book we are reading?(5 min)

DEVELOPMENT:

1.  Go over Do Now (5 min)

2.  Questions to ask about  Chapters 6, 7, 8 & 9: (5 min)

1.      Why was Adele's reaction to Rex's death so interesting?

2.      Since everyone's reaction has been of disinterest, can the same be said of Elaine?

3.      How would you describe Percival's reaction to the murder?

3.  Read Chapters 10, 11 & 12 out loud in class (14 min).  Stop to discuss as necessary.

4.  Review/summarize.

SWBAT analyze motivation in Agatha Christie's A Pocket Full Of Rye.

DO NOW:  In W.N.: You've met most of the characters. Who did it, and why?  (5 min)

1.  Go over Do Now (5 min)

2.  Questions to ask about  Chapters 10, 11 & 12: (5 min)

1.      Why doesn't Lance want Pat to come to the house?

2.      Since almost everyone is happy to see Lance come home, why had he described his family as "not devoted"?

3.      Where was Gladys going?

4.      How is Miss Marple connected to Gladys?

5.      Who is Albert "Bert" Evans?

6.      What does the rhyme. "Sing a song of sixpence" have to do with the murders?

7.      Who is Gerald Wright? Add to character chart.

5.  Review/summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Read chapters 14, 15, 16..  2.  Blog it!  Describe Miss Marple.  Do you think she will be a better sleuth than Inspector Neele?  Why or why not?

SWBAT recall nursery rhymes as a way to solve the murder in Agatha Christie's A Pocket Full Of Rye.

DO NOW:  In W.N.: Describe a time where you were in a situation  that you didn't think you'd get out of (5 min)

1.  Go over Do Now (5 min)

2.  Questions to ask about  Chapters 15, 16, and 17 (as we read it):

§      What was the practical joke, dealing with blackbirds?

§      Who are the MacKenzies?

3.  Read Chapters  17, 18,  and 19 aloud in class (20 min)

            Work on hand out as we read.

4.  Summary: Go over the HW (4 min)
