SWBAT:  define and identify phrases and adjective and adverb phrases.

DO NOW:  Independent reading.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Ask students to find grammar section of their binders.
  2. Review Adjectives and Adverbs.
  3. Review prepositional phrases.
  4. Preview idea of using the whole prepositional phrase as an adverb or even an adjective. 
  5. Discuss how this can be connected.
  6. Review power point presentation. 
  7. DO exercise: 2, p. 115, and 5, p. 117 together if we have time.

H.W.    1.  Finish Ex. 2 on p. 115, and Ex. 5, p. 117

SWBAT:  identify, locate, explain and differentiate between clauses and phrases

DO NOW:  Take out H.W. and independent reading

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Review H.W.

2.      Begin PowerPoint presentation on clauses.

3.      Students should take notes as we go.

4.      Complete Exercise 1, p. 149, and 2, pp. 150-151, if we have time in class.

SWBAT:  practice using and identifying dependent and independent clauses.

DO NOW:  Take out your homework and independent reading

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Review H.W.
  2. Do Ex. 2. p. 150-151.
  3. Practice making up sentences with dependent clauses.
  4. Emphasize that one thing young writers need to begin doing is writing more complex and interesting sentences.
  5. If time allows, introduce the idea that dependent clauses can function as either adjectives or adverbs depending on what they are modifying.
  6. Review/summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Ex. 3, p. 151.  2. Independent reading.

SWBAT:  define and identify adjective and adverb clauses.

DO NOW:  Take out H.W and independent reading

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Discuss and review grammar H.W. exercises.  I will circulate to make sure everyone has done his or her homework.
  2. Review Thursday’s lesson about phrases and clauses, and the different kinds of clauses, independent and dependent. 
  3. Administer quick quiz on dependent and independent clauses.
  4. Review power point, about adjective and adverb clauses.
  5. Review and have students copy down the “secrets.”
  6. Review/summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Ex. 7, p. 155-156.  Ex. 8. p. 158-159.  2.  Independent reading.

SWBAT:  define and identify simple sentences, compound sentences, and complex sentences.

DO NOW:  Independent reading and take out your H.W. for review

  1. Review and discuss H.W.
  2. Show the second half of the presentation about the different kinds of sentence, simple, compound and complex.
  3. Explain the “recipe.”  Have students copy into their notes.
  4. Have students make up their own sentences, simple, compound and complex.  Share.
  5. If time allows we may begin H.W.:  Review Exercise E, pp. 185-186, #1-20.
  6. Review and summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Actually DO Review Exercise E, pp. 185-186, #1-20, write down which kind of sentence structure it is.J

  3. Answer questions as necessary.
  4. Review/summarize.
