SWBAT:  define, recognize and identify predicate adjectives and predicate nouns.

DO NOW:   Independent reading

MATERIALS:

    Power point on practicing direct and indirect objects

    Power point about predicate adjectives and pred. nouns.

DEVELOPMENT: 

1.      Review power point with answers to H.W. 

2.      Review practice for Direct and Indirect objects.

3.      Answer questions as they arise.

4.      Run power point on pred. adj. and pred. nouns. 

5.      Review/summarize.

6.      Go over H.W.

H.W.:   1. In the yellow grammar book, DO:  Rev. A, p. 96, and Ex. 8, pp. 101-102.  Follow the directions.  2.  Quick assessment of verb completers Wednesday!  How to study?  Review notes, and power points on web.  Do practice exercises in grammar book.  Make sure you understand the recipe for success!  3.  Independent reading.

DO NOW:  Independent reading, have your homework out for checking.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Check pages for reading.
  2. Return interviews if ready.
  3. Review homework.
  4. Practice Rev. Ex. C, p. 106.
  5. Review quiz format.

H.W.:  Study for quiz on verb completers tomorrow!  Independent reading.

DO NOW:       Independent reading and take out homework, Ex 8, pp. 101-102.  Have it out on your desks, so I can check it as I go around.

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Review power point with answers to H.W.

2.      Review practice for verb completers.

3.      Answer questions as they arise.  Review recipe for success.

4.      Administer quiz.

5.      Review/summarize.

SWBAT: analyze the term whodunit and apply it to Pocketful of Rye by Agatha Chrsitie

DO NOW:  Independent reading.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Distribute Pocket Full of Rye books.
  1. Begin discussion and read aloud of Pocket Full of Rye.
  2. Introduce the term whodunit. 
  3. Pass out Character/Motive sheet. (2 min)
  4. Explain: Fill out the chart while reading book. Will help with characters. (1 min)
  1. Explain: Use sticky notes for where you think clues are during the story. (1 min)
  2. Explain:  use sticky notes for vocabulary – at least one per chapter and use personal vocabulary sheet.  I find it is usually easier to just put a post-it while you are reading, and then take care of vocabulary later, unless the word is absolutely crucial to your understanding of the passage.  Then, of course, you should look it up right on the spot.
  3. KEEP BOOK SAFE! Put it in a ziplock when not in use. Help keep them in good shape! DO NOT DOG EAR THE BOOKS. (1 min)
  4. Look at book cover. Why is this person standing in the mist? (1 min)  Look at the first page. Read out loud about the author. (1 min)  Turn page, look at the amount of books that she has written. (1 min) 
  5. Read aloud Chapters 1 and 2. (5 min)

H.W.  1.  Read through chapter 2, p. 17.  2.  Complete the character/motive chart as you read the book and meet new characters.  This will help you figure out whodunit!  3.  Vocabulary post-its!  4.  Write an entry in your writer’s notebook:  Do you think Rex Fortescue’s death was routine?  Why or why not???

SWBAT:  analyze motive in Pocket Full of Rye by Agatha Christie.

DO NOW:   Write an entry:  What clues did you find?  And what new vocabulary words did you find?  Review correct definitions.

DEVELOPMENT:

1.  Go over Do Now (5 min)

2.  Questions to ask about  Chapters 1 and 2: (5 min)

1.      Why was the way the secretaries reacted to Rex's death so odd?

2.      What revealed to the doctor that the poison was Taxine?

3.      Why do you think Rex had been acting so strange lately?

3.  Read Chapters 3, 4, 5 in class (14 min).  We will begin as a read aloud and then silent reading time.  Stop to discuss as necessary.

4.  Review and summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Finish reading chapters 3, 4, and 5.  2.  Write one page in writer’s notebook: 

Why would someone want to get rid of Rex?  3.  Post-its! For vocab and clues.  Continue to fill out character motive chart.
