SWBAT:  define gerunds and gerund phrases and how they are used in sentences.

DO NOW:  Take out your homework.  (Please simply mark on the roster provided.  Give a student a check if he or she has made a decent attempt to complete the homework.  NO credit if a student has not made a decent effort.)

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Review the homework from the night before.  Answers are in the grammar book.  If you don’t understand why the right answer is right (and it is honestly difficulty – ask a student to explain.  There will be several who can do so very well!)
  2. As you review the homework, please circulate so you can check who has done homework.  Please check off in the roster provided.
  3. Run power point presentation on Gerunds.  This is on the s:common drive in the Quinson folder.
  4. Students take notes as you run through the presentation.
  5. If time allows, students begin homework.
  6. Review/summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Ex. 10, p. 104, Ex. 11, p. 104, Ex. 12, pp. 105-106.  2.  Independent reading.

SWBAT:  review Verbals and verbal phrases in preparation for a quiz the day after tomorrow!

DO NOW:  Take out your homework. 

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Review the homework from the night before.  Answers are in the grammar book.  If you don’t understand why the right answer is right (and it is honestly difficulty – ask a student to explain.  There will be several who can do so very well!)
  2. As you review the homework, please circulate so you can check who has done homework.  Please check off in the roster provided.
  3. Ask students to complete Review Exercise B, p. 109 as review.
  4. Review/summarize.

H.W.:  1.  Study for quiz the day after tomorrow.  One great way to study it to find grammar quizzes on line.

SWBAT:  demonstrate deep understanding of the verbals and verbal phrases.

DO NOW:  Prepare for your quiz.  

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Distribute quiz.

2.      Remind students that they are very welcome to write all over the quiz. 

3.      Collect quizzes at the end of the period. 

H.W.: 1.  Independent reading.

SWBAT:  define and analyze the use and punctuation of appositives and appositive phrases.

DO NOW:  Grab a grammar book.  Review your quiz.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Explain that we are going to be learning about appositives today, but that I’m not entirely sure when we’ll be testing on it.  We may, gasp!, just be learning without testing….  Can that be???
  2. Open books to p. 113.  Read information  appositives. 
  3. Write sentences on board as examples.
  4. Review proper punctuation of appositives. 
  5. Do Exercise 17, p. 115 together.
  6. Complete Exercise C, pp. 115 on their own.

H.W.:  Read a book.  A whole book!  Pick a good one!  J
