SWBAT:  analyze Morrie’s discourse on regret and Mitch’s reaction.

DO NOW: Write an entry in your writer’s notebook:  Describe Morrie’s discussion about regret.  What is Mitch’s reaction? 

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Review DO NOW.

2.      Review study guide answers.

3.      Review metaphors and similes.

4.      Move to class discussion:

·        Examine the significance of the tape recorder Mitch brings to his sessions with Morrie.  Note the metaphor that “tapes are a desperate attempt to steal something form death’s suitcase.”

·        Discuss Morrie’s second appearance on “Nightline.”  Note the context of the interview and signs of Morrie’s advancing debility.  As Morrie’s health declines, how will he be able to show his love for others?

·        Examine the information about Morrie’s childhood and how these early years shaped his life.

·        Read aloud the quote from Henry Adams on page 79 of this novel, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”  Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

5.      Review/summarize.

6.      If time allows, students may begin reading on.

SWBAT:  discuss how Morrie reacts to his death sentence.

DO NOW:  Re-read the first paragraph on page 80, then write a writer’s notebook entry:  What is your reaction to Morrie’s perspective on death?

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Discuss DO NOW entry.

2.      Review study guide answers.

3.      Review metaphors and similes.

4.      Move to class discussion (See possible answers in Novel Units Guide.

  • Discuss the dialogue between Mitch and Morrie regarding death.  Analyze Morrie’s statement, “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” (p. 82).  Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
  • Analyze the metaphor, “He (Morrie) was a religious mutt.” (p. 82).
  • Examine Morrie’s philosophy about family and its effect on Mich.  Discuss Morrie’s relationship with his own family and the “painful price” he must pay for having children.
  • Analyze Mitch’s relationship with his brother, Peter, both as children and adults. 
  • Analyze the personification of cancer: “I could feel its breath.” (p. 96).

SWBAT:  discuss how Morrie teaches Mitch about emotions.

DO NOW:  Write an entry:  How has Morrie’s condition changed since Mitch’s last visit?. 

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Discuss DO NOW entries.

2.      Discuss metaphors and similes students found in last night’s reading.  Have them keep a list in the literature section of their binders.

3.      Review study guide answers.

4.      Move to class discussion (See possible answers in Novel Units Guide).

  • Discuss how Morrie begins his discourse on emotions and analyze the significance of the “lesson.” 
  • Discuss what prompts Morrie to tell Mitch how he wants to die and the significance of his desire.
  • Analyze the simile comparing Morrie to a prisoer in leg irons on page 108 and compare the imagery of Morrie and a gazelle.
  • Examine Morrie’s professional background and what this reveals about him.
  • Refer to “Morrie’s statement, “…the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves,” (page 35) and analyze Morrie’s reaction to his loss of the most personal and basic physical activities.
  • Analyze Mitch and Morrie’s dialogue about death.

5.      Review/summarize.
