SWBAT:  begin writing their memoirs in the computer lab.

DO NOW:  Log on.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Mini lesson about manners in the computer room. 
  2. Mini lesson about logging on, saving, (as first draft, second draft,) etc. on the computer.  Greg Montague will do this.
  3. Mini lesson about making a movie behind your eyelids.
  4. Students write.  I confer.
  5. Wrap up.  Tonight work for at least 30 minutes at home on your memoir.  Find quiet time on the computer.  If you have no access to a computer, by all means handwrite and you can type it in tomorrow in class.  But be sure you devote 30 minutes to your work!  Save it on your hard drive at home as 1st draft and either email it to yourself or save it on a flash disk so you can use it here. 

H.W.:  1.  30 minutes on memoir.  2.  30 minutes independent reading.

DO NOW:  Log on.  Open up your draft.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Mini lesson about leads. 
  2. Students write.  I confer.
  3. Wrap up.  Tonight work for at least 30 minutes at home on your memoir.  Find quiet time on the computer.  If you have no access to a computer, by all means handwrite and you can type it in tomorrow in class.  But be sure you devote 30 minutes to your work!

SWBAT:   Make people in your memoir talk:  writing dialogue.

DO NOW:   Take out your drafts and circle (in red pen)  any parts in your memoir where people talk or where you are describing a time when people talked.

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Review H.W. leads.

2.      Mini-lesson on dialogue and dialogue punctuation.  Mini-lesson on how to write additional parts on loose-leaf or backs of pages, and then to type them in. 

3.      Writing/conference time.

4.      Summary/Review H.W.

H.W.: 1.  Re-read your draft.  Are there any additional places you could include dialogue?  If so, insert it!  2.  Add dialogue to your electronic draft.  Save it as your 4th draft.  Print it out and bring it in.   3.  Independent Reading/ Responding.

SWBAT:  add thoughts and feelings to their memoirs.

DO NOW:  Write an entry in your writer’s notebook:  The important message I want my reader to understand after reading my memoir is:                                    I let the reader know this by:

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Review H.W., dialogue and DO NOW.
  2. Discuss the importance of so what?  There has to be  a meaning or so what to your memoir or it won’t be interesting to your readers.
  3. Discuss that the so what often comes out from the thought and feelings of the speaker/writer of the memoir:  YOU. 
  4. Look at overheads of Tyler’s two versions of his memoirs.  See the difference?
  5. Distribute the hand out of THE RULE OF THOUGHTS AND FEELNGS.
  6. Students work.
  7. Review/summarize.
  8. Remind students that they MUST come to class Monday with a final editing draft.  This weekend is their last opportunity to make substantive changes.  After this, we will be editing.  You must have a clean, spell checked, perfect version for editing, because believe me we all miss something!

H.W.:  1.  30 minutes on memoir.  We are going to enter the editing phase tomorrow, so try to make any and all changes, substantive or minor.  Spell check and edit carefully.  Print it out.  Look at it with a pen in hand.  Make changes on the hard copy, then add in changes on the computer.  Save as 5th draft.  Print it out and bring it in.  2.  Independent Reading/Responding.

DO NOW:  Log on.  Open up your draft.

DEVELOPMENT:

  2. Students write.  I confer.
  3. Wrap up.  Tonight work for at least 30 minutes at home on your memoir.  Find quiet time on the computer.  If you have no access to a computer, by all means handwrite and you can type it in tomorrow in class.  But be sure you devote 30 minutes to your work!

H.W.:  1.  30 minutes on memoir.  2.  YOU MUST BRING IN A CLEAN, LATEST, GREATEST PRINTED OUT DRAFT, DOUBLE-SPACED FOR EDITING TOMORROW.  It is vital for tomorrow’s class period!  If you have no printer at home, see me at lunch time today or before school tomorrow.  3.  Independent reading.

SWBAT:          Edit each other's memoirs.

DO NOW:       In the writing section of your binder:  Define editing.

DEVELOPMENT: 

1.      Review H.W. and DO NOW. 

2.      Today's class will be devoted to editing.  Brainstorm a list of things we need to check for editing.  Check for previous knowledge of peer-editing process.  Review procedure.

3.      Distribute Editing Check sheets to each student.

4.      Students work with clock buddies to edit memoirs.

5.      Group share.  What were common problems with editing?

6.      Review H.W., and Memoir Portfolio Checklist

H.W.:    1.  Make changes to your draft as you see fit, based on your in class editing session and your own decisions.  2.  Make sure you have everything saved on your computer at home and put it in your weblocker!    2.  Independent Reading.

SWBAT:  finish our memoirs and turn them in electronically

DO NOW: Pull up your latest, greatest, final draft.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Allow students to make any last minute changes.
  2. Explain that today they will be doing four things:
    1. Completing a Self-Evaluation
    2. Turning in the “grading” draft and self-evaluation (staple the self-evaluation to the front of your grading draft.
    3. Saving all your drafts in a folder with your name to my Quinson folder on the s-common drive.
    4. Uploading your finished memoir to our blog.
  3. Make sure all students have a double-spaced version to print out.
  4. All students should print out.
  5. Greg or I will give a little lesson on how to save all their work to my folder.
  6. Greg or I will remind students how to upload to our blog.
  7. If time allows, students will respond to each others memoirs on the blog.

H.W.:  1.  Independent reading. J   2.  Write at least one page in your writer’s notebook:  Evaluate our whole memoir genre study. Give me constructive criticism.  Tell me what I did well and what I can do to make our next genre study better for you and other students.  (This is a very important homework.  I really need your input.)

DO NOW:  log onto the blog.

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Review proper procedure for responding respectfully and fully to another students memoir. 

2.      You must read and respond to each and every memoir in the class. 

3.      Students read and respond.

4.      Teacher confers and approves comments as they come it.

H.W.:  Independent reading.  At least 45 minutes per night.  J
