SWBAT:  review for midterm.

DO NOW:  Write an entry in your writer’s notebook:  What common ideas of themes do you seem emerging in the literature we’ve read this semester?

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Review DO NOW entry.
  2. Explain that literature tests are almost impossible really to study for.  Either you’ve read and thought about all the literature we’ve read together or you haven’t.  But you can do some thinking at this point.
  3. Consider what ideas about the human condition that you can see in The Odyssey, To Kill  Mockingbird and Great Expectations.  Don’t forget about the short stories!
  4. Review powerpoint about Critical Lens essays. 
  5. Use quotations around the room as examples of critical lenses.  Consider: 
    1. Mark Twain, “You can’t depend on your judgment when you imagination is out of focus.” 
    2. Gandhi, “You must be in the change you want to see in the world.” 
  6. Review/summarize:   Our midterm will be in our room D-201, periods 5, 6, and 7 tomorrow, 2/27/09. 

H.W.:  Get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast.  2. Independent reading.  3.   Review vocabulary. Review your writer’s notebook and notes on literature read this semester.  4.  Our midterm will be in our room D-201 periods 5, 6, and 7 tomorrow, 2/27/09.

SWBAT:  define phrases and examine how they are used in sentences

DO NOW:  Open the grammar section of your binders.  Define phrase.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Review definitions of a phrase.
  2. Show Phrases 2009 power point, through verb phrases.
  3. Do Exercise 15 on page 23 of green grammar book.
  4. If time allows, move on to Prepositional phrases.

H.W.:  1.  Complete Exercise 15, pp. 23-24 in the green grammar book.  2. Independent reading.

 

Friday, January 30, 2009 –There will be very few if any students present.  Those who are present can practice verb phrases in the yellow grammar books under the window sill.

SWBAT:  apply knowledge of verb phrases by finding them and analyzing their use in sentences.

DO NOW:  get a yellow grammar book.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Ask students to get a yellow grammar book from under the window sill.
  2. Student should review the information in the grammar book from the bottom of page 63 to the top of page 65 and then complete Ex. 6, p. 65 and Ex. 7, pp. 65-66.

H.W.:  1.  Complete Ex. 1, p. 88, in your green grammar book at home.  2.  Independent reading.
