SWBAT:  debrief their experience with the ELA and read independently, or prepare independently for the midterm.

DO NOW:   Ask students to write a paragraph on a piece of loose leaf paper:  how did the ELA go today?  What advice would you give next years’ 8th graders taking this exam?

DEVELOPMENT:

1.      Tell students that I can’t be in class today, but I really want to know what they think, so you will be collecting these sheets and turning them in to me.

2.      After they write their paragraphs, allow students to study independently for their midterm next week.  They may not talk, because it would be disruptive to others who are reading.  They may read stories, novels, review notes.

H.W.:  1. Study for Midterm, Tuesday 1/27/09 in our room, D-201 period 5, 6, 7  2.  Sleep well.  3. Eat Breakfast.  4.  Bring two, sharpened, #2 pencils WITH ERASERS to your ELA room.

SWBAT:  study for midterm.

DO NOW:   Write a list:  what specific subjects most concern you about the midterm examination?

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Study vocabulary as I outlined it for you on our website.
  2. We will review verb completers today.  That takes care of grammar.  You also need to know parts of speech.
  3. Reading comprehension is reading comprehension.
  4. Literature just means study all the works we read together so you can answer questions about them.  The questions will be similar to those on the recent test, I suppose.
  5. Short answer and essays are just that.  Save you time for those on the real test, though, because that is where the lion’s share of the points are.
  6. Review grammar.
  7. Review/summarize.
