SWBAT: read the last inaugural poem and anticipate the next one! Perhaps even write one?
DO NOW: Independent reading.
DEVELOPMENT:
1. Copy your ELA room.
2. Make sure you have pencils for tomorrow.
3. Read “Of History and Hope” the last inaugural poem from 1997.
4. Interpret poem through paraphrase and close reading.
5. Anticipate what the new poem might/should be like.
6. Review/summarize.
7. Get ready for ELA!
H.W.: 1. Independent reading. 2. Sleep well. 3. Eat Breakfast. 4. Bring two, sharpened, #2 pencils WITH ERASERS to your ELA room.

DO NOW: Independent reading
DEVELOPMENT:
1. Ask students to write a paragraph on a piece of loose leaf paper: how did the ELA go today? What advice would you give next years’ 8th graders taking this exam?
2. Tell students that I can’t be in class today, but I really want to know what they think, so you will be collecting these sheets and turning them in to me.
3. After they write their paragraphs, allow students to read independently.
H.W.: 1. Independent reading. 2. Sleep well. 3. Eat Breakfast. 4. Bring two, sharpened, #2 pencils WITH ERASERS to your ELA room.

DO NOW: Independent reading
DEVELOPMENT:
1. Discuss what students had said on their papers.
2. Discuss the value of independent reading in preparation for the test and for life.
3. Discuss the value of new year’s resolutions.
4. Ask students to write an entry in their writer’s notebooks: what should your character choose for a new year’s resolution?
