Welcome to our Earth Day 1999 Project Page!

Shortly after our 1998 formation we realized that suburban development was threatening the forests of our region. But what if we brought the forests into the suburbs? That was December 1998 when we first got the idea to give out free trees in our school.

With the help of Garden Possabilities Bookstore and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority that idea blossomed into our Earth Day 1999 Project.

On April 21st 1999 which is of course Earth Day, we gave out 50 white pine saplings to our classmates. Care sheets and information on the trees were given out also. The day before we had all gathered at Garden Possabilities Bookstore (which is owned by Evelyn Wolf, the mother of club member Karen) and potted the trees and attached stickers and booklets. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority ahd provided the trees from one of their nurseries.

Thanks to Evelyn Wolf and the LSRCA, as well as the thoughtful intiative of the Environmental club members, the suburbs were greened up just a little bit more! Remember- every little bit counts. If everyone pitches in like we and our grade 4 classmates from Bogart did, big things can get done!

Some trees survived and some didn't. That's just like nature. Don't be hard on yourself if a tree dies in your care. It's only natural. Now we are in Grade 6 and beacaus of the huge success of 1999's project, we may do it again! We hope this may be an inspiration to anyone who would like to plant a tree to help the earth!

This would not have been possible without Garden Possabilities and the LSRCA. Please patronize Garden Possabilities or make a donation to the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. It can be your way of saying thank you for helping to save the earth!
