Jeje - literally means Sister. It is also a way for younger person to refer to a slightly older non-biologically related girl. This is often used by Fong Fok Sung in MDWAV. |
Guleung - literally means Miss or Lady. It is used to refer an unmarried [young] women in ancient or more traditional chinese. As Hong Kong's Cantonese evolve, people tend to use the term Guleung less. It became a term used more often for female nurses and caretakers. In MDWAV, Gin Tao uses the term Guleung for Ma Siu Ling, because he came from the Song Dynasty. |
Kowtow - the motion of bowing. Or placing one's head all the way to the ground as a sign of submission in Chinese culture. Can be used as a noun or verb. Normally, one can only give kowtows to elders or teachers. Forcing another person to kowtow is a way to shame that person. Kim Jing Jong needs to do a kowtow before the Ma clan ancestors before he can be Ma Siu Ling's apprentice. |
Chi - This word is not cantonese translation but mandarin translation, since the mandarin translation is used more often in western culture. Can also be translated as "Qi". See Overview - Concepts |
Sifu - literally means Master / Teacher. It is most often used in Kung Fu movies for Kung Fu master as a title of respect. Other times, people can call a professional chinese doctor or mechanic as a Sifu to show respect for that person's professional skill. But in general, it is just a way for a disciple to refer to his or her teacher. In chinese culture, a Sifu commands respect from his/her students, they generally have more power over disciplining disciples, than the western "teachers". In MDWAV, Ma Siu Ling is the Sifu of Kim Jing Jong. |
Fok - a person's happiness credit. Lots of Chinese believe that Fok or happiness credit is born with each person. Some people are meant to have more than others from birth. This credit is thought to be transferable and can be borrowed by others. If you do a good deed, you will get more, if you do a bad deed, you will lose some. When all Fok credit is used up, a person would die in a tragic way. In MDWAV2, Jan Jan loan out her Fok to the mother of Mung Mung. |
Lo Gon - husband. In MDWAVI, AuYeung Ga Ga's Lo Gon has passed away when Wong Jan Jan was young. |
Lo Pau - wife. Depends on the tone of the person, it can sound like "Dear" or "Old hag". |
Leng Jai - handsome boy or guy. If it's said in a negative or debasing way, it can mean lad. |
Leng Nu - pretty girl or woman. Ma Siu Ling and Wong Jan Jan are leng nu. |
