Amber Hunt seemed to have it all.  A popular, beautiful cheerleader in a posh Los Angeles high school, daughter of a well-known attorney and member of a very wealthy Beverly Hills family, Amber seemingly had no worries.  That is, until the sunny December day that the Soviet Supreme demolished her school in an attempt to capture her.  The Soviet Supreme was sent by the sinister Malcolm Kort, who was collecting "potentials" to form a superhuman army.  Amber was saved by the efforts of the Exiles, a secret team of ultras put together by Dr. Rachel Deming.  They took Amber to Exiles Island, where Deming revealed to her that she carried the Theta Virus, a disease that bestowed ultra powers but was invariably terminal. She offered Amber treatment for the Theta Virus, but Deming escorted the Exiles on a mission to strike against Malcolm Kort before Amber could be given the m-RNA treatment.  Afraid that she would die before the Exiles returned, Amber activated the m-RNA sequencer herself, which caused her pyrokinetic powers to manifest, and subsequently become unstable.  Before Heather and Trax could bring the malfunctioning m-RNA bath under control, a mysterious beam from out of the clear blue sky struck Amber while she was in the tank...  causing her powers to flare out of control.  Heather and Trax were vaporized, and Stronghold Island was consumed in a massive explosion, an explosion powerful enough to create a tidal wave that would soon lay waste to Malibu.  The Exiles, returning from the mission, were caught in the blast.  Deadeye and Mustang were killed, Catapult was sent into a coma, and Deming herself was permanently incapacitated.  Only Deming remained conscious... broken, burned, and disillusioned, to see Amber rocketing skyward in agony, under the control of the Entity.

The Entity, a sort of alien "black box", was buried inside the Earth's moon, and desired to return to its home.  Its distress calls had been creating ultras for centuries, beings that would possess the power to free it from its lunar prison, and in Amber the Entity saw a being that possessed the power it needed to complete that task.  The Entity had possessed Amber, and used her as a conduit to call its "children" to the moon.  The whole world watched via live television as Amber floated in the skies above Los Angeles, blasting out light energy and driving the world insane.  Beginning with infrared and slowly, methodically working her way through the visible spectrum toward ultraviolet, Amber began to emit light energy that increased in range and intensity as she shifted.  Ultras, as they were all created due to the Entity's power, felt an increasing need to travel to the moon and free the Entity.  Unfortunately, Amber's newfound power drove normal humans insane, and millions of people across the face of the world were consumed with a burning desire to travel to the moon and free the Entity as well... sometimes flying planes straight up into space or scaling large buildings and towers.  Various ultras, including the Strangers, the Solution, Prime, Prototype, Mantra, Hardcase, Choice, Wrath, Warstrike, and others battled against each other to either capture or kill Amber in the skies above Los Angeles, but all of them were inevitably drawn to the moon.  In a climactic battle, the Entity was destroyed, but not before transmitting its stored information to several ultras in its vicinity.  To Amber, it showed the knowledge of every world it had stored in its databanks, which drove the girl insane, her mind shredded by the vast knowledge.  She became feral and animalistic, and returned to the Earth in the Canadian wilderness.  There, she went to live with the wolves, as they bayed at the moon as she now did.

In September of the next year, the Time Infinity Gem came to Amber after the seven gems were separated when the living embodiment of the gems was destroyed by the Black Knight.  While the Space, Mind, Soul, and Power Gems were evil and became their own evil beings with bodies in the Infinity Waves following the explosion, the Time and Reality Gems remained as gems, and fled to Earth to hide from their brothers.  While Warstrike (now known as 'Strike) got the Time Gem and became the king of the Infinity-altered planet, Amber got the Reality Gem and regained her sanity.  The Time Gem, protecting Amber from the rampant Infinity Waves, led her to the Time Gem, and after some trouble, she got the Gem from 'Strike.  With both Gems, she went back in time and stopped the Infinity Waves before they could destroy reality... although one got through, rearranging the Ultraverse, and the gems remained as gems. This event was known as Black September.  After Amber helped save the world, the Time and Reality Gems went off into space, presumably back to their own universe, and Amber went back to her insane ways in the wilderness with the wolves.

Mere days later, Amber became the target of two different ultras: 'Strike, who foresaw Amber's participation in some great future catastrophe, and Shuriken, an Aladdin agent sent to capture Amber.  Amber was caught in the crossfire, and she unleashed a primal scream, tearing a gaping hole in the fabric of reality.  The three of them were teleported to Gameworld, on the distant Godwheel, where Amber quite literally landed in the arms of Juggernaut.  Amber, Juggernaut, 'Strike, and Shuriken joined the mutants Reaper and Siena Blaze in forming a new team of Exiles, and returned to Earth.  However, upon returning to New York City, they learned that a mysterious blast leveled a portion of Manhattan at the exact moment of their arrival, and they found themselves blamed for the destruction!  Juggernaut cared for the feral, childlike Amber during the first two weeks spent on the run, his affection blossoming into love as he saw that she was as tortured as he.  Later, Amber would come to return Juggernaut's affections, and she was deeply saddened when the alien Tradesmen sent Juggernaut back to his own universe.

As Amber used her powers, her inner chaos and confusion was burned away, and her sanity was restored... just in time for her to be possessed by the Phoenix Force.  The Mothership, creator of the Entity and stranded at the bottom of the ocean in the Bermuda Triangle, had drawn the Phoenix Force into the Ultraverse, and was attempting to use it to power its engines to return home.  The Phoenix, wounded, vengeful, and half-mad from the Mothership's raping of its powers, took over the body of the ultra hero Prime, but the combined might of several ultras and mutants drove the Phoenix from Prime.  The Phoenix took refuge in Amber, but since the Mothership's programming was still very much a part of Amber, the girl was nearly captured in an attempt to be consumed as fuel.  Two of the most powerful ultras, Rex Mundi and the Alternate, both knew that the Mothership was tied to the Entity and the origin of all ultras, and sent the Solution and Quattro, respectively, to kill the Phoenix and Amber Hunt.  However, the X-Men, the Exiles, the Solution, Team Quattro, and Ultraforce united to drive off the Phoenix and cripple the Mothership, and Amber was freed.  A small portion of the Phoenix Force remained within Amber, granting her greatly augmented powers.

When the new Exiles encountered the alien war machine known as Maxis, they were soundly defeated in battle at Ground Zero, the site of New York's devastation, even as the American military and several ultra mercenaries moved in to kill the Exiles.  Maxis had been sent to Earth by the Ozama, a race under siege by the forces of the Tulkan Empire, to collect the "power codes" of various ultras and mutants for later implantation into Ozaman volunteers.  Maxis defeated the Exiles and drove off or destroyed the forces sent to kill the Exiles, and also did battle with the newly-arrived Ultraforce.  Amber fought alongside Ultraforce against Maxis, but the war robot drained Amber of her Phoenix powers.  During the battle, when the forces of the alien Tulkan Empire arrived over New York City in their search for the extragalactic menace known as the Demonseed, Amber fought alongside the world's surviving ultras against the invaders, where she discovered that the Phoenix powers were gone.  After the Tulkan Empire departed and the Exiles disbanded, Amber distracted the arriving Aladdin strike force and allowed Shuriken to escape.  Amber elected to join Ultraforce herself to avoid capture, and fought with them during several battles against the Demonseed.  Though the final struggle against the Demonseed very nearly finished Amber and Ultraforce for good, the team came out triumphant.
