The following true-lifer is from Brassroots' Second Vice President, Gary Taylor. I think it speaks well to a lot of argument points that Rick DeStephens has made on innumerable occasions on this listserve. But, I'm afraid it only speaks well of the police force from an "individual" standpoint.

It's just too bad that Gary didn't insist upon explaining his bumper sticker *before* the ticket was written. Coulda' been a "bigger" win! ;-)

I hope he recounts this interesting tale at tonight's Brassroots meeting.

Phil --

I was traveling home from work tonight and not paying much attention. As luck would have it, I went through a red light just as it changed from yellow. And yes, as luck would have it, there was a TPD setting on the cross-street turn lane. Sure enough, he pulled me over. I knew he was going to, so I pulled off on a side street, got out of the car and waited with my license out of my wallet and stood next to the car. He pulled up and I waved to him and he asked the usual questions. I gave him the I.D. then he pointed to my GUN CONTROL IS RACIST sticker on my back window and said, "I don't understand this, what does it mean?" I started to explain and he said, "Well lets take care of the ticket first." After all the formalities, he gave me the ticket and then again asked about the sticker. I gave him the whole story. The one that I have told at least a hundred times at gun shows, and at work. Then I told him about Clinton trying to deprive the people in public housing the right to own guns and how it was also racist. He stopped and looked at me and said, "You know, you are right! I have never looked at it that way." Then I asked him if he had seen Braveheart. "I sure have," he said. Then I reminded him of the King's men taking away the swords and then raping the women. Then I said something that really hit him. You know that gun control is always the first thing a tyrant does before genocide. He was absolutely silent for about 30 seconds. He looked at me and said, "You know the department doesn't like us being pro-gun. And I know that I shouldn't say this, but I agree with you 100 percent." I told him that he was not a robot and even though he was a police officer he still had the right to free thought. I wished him good night and went on my way. It was worth the ticket to educate this guy for 10 minutes.

One small victory.

Gary
