1. Mandatory blocking software proposal in Congress 2. Event in NYC this Monday, Nov. 1
1. Mandatory blocking software proposal in Congress: The House and the Senate have passed different versions of a "juvenile justice bill" that may become law, requiring the use of blocking software in schools and libraries for *all* users. (Despite these provisions being present in a "juvenile justice bill", blocking software would be required by all users of any age, but with stricter requirements while computers are used by anyone under 18.) The Senate version of the bill would require all ISP's to provide blocking software to customers for free, or at cost. The EFF and the ACLU have excellent information on their site about the bills in their current state, and how you can help to oppose them. See the ACLU's page on general cyber-liberties issues at: http://www.aclu.org/issues/cyber/hmcl.html and the EFF's page at: http://www.eff.org/br/br1.html
2. NYC event (announcement from Bennett Haselton, bennett@peacefire.org) : ***** To Peacefire members who live in or near NYC -- I'll be a panelist at a debate organized by FamilyPC magazine that will e taking place Monday, November 1, at Tishman Auditorium from 7:30 - 9:00 PM. The topic will be "Internet Safety vs. First Amendment Rights". Other panelists are supposed to represent several different political backgrounds, but I'm actually going to be the only one speaking against blocking software, so if you like four-against-one political shouting matches, please show up! Time and location: The New School Tishman Auditorium 66 W. 12th St. 7:30 - 9:00 PM, Monday, Nov. 1st he other panelists will be: Gordon Ross from NetNanny.com, Parry Aftab (author of a book on "keeping your kids safe in cyberspace"), Liza Kessler from CDT.org, and Curtis Sliwa from the "Guardian Angels" (sort of affiliated with CyberAngels.org and SafeSurf). Let me know if you can make it, and I'll see you there -- I'm leaving tomorrow morning but I should still be able to check email this weekend. *****
