NATIONAL LIBERTARIAN PARTY DUMPS ARIZONA AFFILIATE

In a highly unusual move, the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) voted in August to "disaffiliate" the Arizona Libertarian Party because of bitter in-fighting between two rival camps. According to the LP News, the fighting over strategy and tactics became so acute that the LNC "could no longer determine who were the proper officers of the Arizona LP, and which set of bylaws was in effect." When mediation failed, the LNC took this drastic step. The LNC is now accepting applications for a new affiliate and will eventually conduct a non-binding referendum among national Libertarian Party members in Arizona to help determine which application to accept. The LNC anticipates making a final decision by December 1999. "It's a shame that we had to take this action, but wiping the slate clean seemed to be the only way to move towards an effective, harmonious Libertarian Party in Arizona," said National Libertarian Chairman David Bergland.
