I wonder why you dug this old message up. I decided to reply personally, since nobody felt like discussing "corrupt cops" back in November when my response was originally posted. At any rate, I have responded to some of your ideas below:

I think you already know that everybody on this list knows that you think cops are corrupt. So what do you want us to do about it, huh? More to the point, what are YOU doing about it?
I sympathize with you personally, but, man, how are we supposed to benefit by your ranting?
> >They're supposed to uphold the laws, even when they disagree with them

You THINK? What do you know? I KNOW that cops are part of the executive branch of the government, which means they enforce the LAW. It is the duty of the Judicial branch to decide if a law is unconstitutional. And, BTW, that can't happen until someone gets arrested and convicted, and then appeals the conviction based on the defense that the law is unconstitutional. This is not the cop's job.
> at the libertarian convention last week i talked to a cop.
> he said he never arrests people for having conceled weapons.

This is a good example of why you shouldn't stereotype all cops as pigs. Your own personal experience has proven that there are good cops (like above). Also, how do you know that this guy doesn't bust marijuana smokers anyway? Just because he doesn't uphold the concealed weapons law doesn't mean that he always acts according to conscience instead of the law.
> now if i ever get on a jury and im asked to jail somebody
> for smoking marijuana if the guy is guilty as hell im going
> to adquit the guy. fuck the law. the law is wrong and im
> not going to enforce a bad law. cops should do the same.
As a jury member, it is your right to acquit someone who you feel should not be punished for breaking a law- ONLY as a jury member do you have this right.

If you were a pot-smoking cop, wouldn't you? First off, he's doing his job to confiscate an illegal substance, so he gets brownie points with his boss or whoever. Second off, he can take some of the evidence for himself and still leave enough to prosecute you. If I was him, I'd do the same, that is, take advantage of my position of power. That is, of course, the nature of the problem: the cops have powers that maybe they shouldn't have.

Come on, a cop can get busted for buying weed, but not for stealing evidence before anyone else has measured it. Its about self protection in this case; the pot-smoking cop must protect himself from other cops.
> a scottsdale cop who lives next to my sister does the same thing
> he steals beer from underage kids. honest ethical guy huh?
I see, a couple of bad eggs ruin the batch. You've been hurt, so all cops are bad. Your view is extremely myopic.
> if you take an oath to uphold the constition rights of the citizens,

You're telling me? The whole point of political activism is to get these issues noticed by legislators so that the rules can be changed. You probably would prefer anarchy to mediated change. Am I right?
> if putting on a uniform turns you into an unstable person
> who cant control your own behavior you have no business
> putting on a uniform and being a cop.
Too bad there's no test for what wearing a uniform would do to a particular psychological profile. Sounds like a research opp.
I gotta go, but I look forward to your personal reply. -Darin
