Photos from Hershey Summer Vacation '98
Neil and Kevin at the Williamsport, PA Holiday Inn.
Williamsport is the home of the Little League World Series, and this town was our first stop.
Memorial Day we went down to East Strasburg, PA to check out train stuff. We bought tickets at the station here and went on a 45 minute excursion by steam locomotive.
The engine that pulled us. Lots of history along this stretch of rail which was once used as a thoroughfare for trains from Washington to Chicago. Lincoln passed right by here on his way to Washington as newly elected President, and sadly, his funeral train returned a few years later by the same ironic railroad line.
We rode in a standard class coach.
A half-mile away from East Strasburg station is the Red Caboose Hotel, where you can stay the night in a real caboose. You can see about 40 cabooses strung together across the parking lot here. Cozy, I bet, but it sounds cool to me and the boys. Maybe next year...
Neil discovered the playground nearby.
Hershey was busy the next day, but only at the Chocolate World entrance. That's me in the red shirt w/Kevin taking the high road.
Mom and Kevin reluctantly accept some free confection that Hershey was handing out that day. They said it was made of cacao beans and milk and sugar?! Chocolate? Yuk. :)
Kevin had a great time at the park, but the untrained eye may disagree. Frowns, scowls, folded arms and general disgusted looks showered all events. Even the ponies didn't lighten him up, but he asked for more and more.
Among many other rides, Neil and I rode the old favorites, the rockets. Hydro-pneumatic cylinders allow the fearless pilot, Neil, to guide our craft vertically and rotationally through oncoming meteorite storms. I think I rode this thing 2 dozen times when I was a kid, and I still get a big kick out of it.
What's a vacation without unscheduled play time? Neil and Kevin take their trucks to the grassy area surrounding our Hampton Inn in Grantville, PA.
We made other stops at Steamtown National Historic Park in Scranton, PA.
