The Eight Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, was organized at Camp Macon, near Warrenton, North Carolina, in August and in September, 1861. It was Formed from the following Counties: Company A-Pasquotank, Perquimans and Camden counties. Company B-Curritick. Company C-Edgecomb, Franklin and New Hanover. Company D-Granville, Franklin and Warren. Company E-Cumberland, Chatham, Harrnett. Company F-Warren, Rowan, and Franklin. Compnay H-Cabarrus, Capt. Rufus A. Barrier. Company I-Alamance, Capt. E.D. Cobb Company K-Rowan, Capt. P.A. Kennerly. They were Mustered in September 13th. by Col. Robert Ransom. On Sept. 18th they left for Roanoke Island. On October 4th, with 650 men they attacted the enemy at Chicamacomgo. and captured 55 Prisoners. October 29, Co. H was ordered to Battery Huger. They where captured February 8th. and were prisoners of war for two weeks and then sent home. On September 1862 the regiment re-assembled near Raleigh, Under Gen. T. L . Clingham's Brigade. In October they went to near Kinston and in November to Wilmington and in December to Goldsboro. |

Up to 1863 they where in winter quarters at Camp Whiting. In February, 1863 they went to Charleston, S.C., on James Island, then they went to Savannah, Ga., and then returned to Charleston. In May they went to Wilmington, near Old Topsail Sound. Many Died from sickness. In July they went back to Charleston. On the 22nc. of July they went to Morris Island. Here they where shelled by the enemy's iron-clads. They next moved to Sullivans's Island. On December 14th, they arrived at Petersburg, Va., On December 30. they returned to Kinston. Col. H. M Shaw was killed near Kinston. They then returned to Petersburg. They went on an expedition against Suffolk, Va., Under Gen. M.W. Ransom. Here they and the 51st. North Carolina had a battle with snow-balls. On April 17th, they where at Plymouth. Here was a big battle and 15 men of Company H where killed and wounded. Three where killed, two mortally wounded and the others severely. On the 20th. the fight on the forts where made and many killed. They Captured Plymouth but the 8th lost 154 killed and wounded, or 1-3 of their numbers. Capt. Cook was wounded here. The color bearer was killed and Jacob R. Barnhardt, of Company H. was appointed. On the 20th, James Misenhimer of Company H Was killed. They net marched to Washington, N.C., and then to New Bern, and on May 6th, back to Petersburg by train and the to Drewry's Bluff. Here the battle began on the 16th 1864. For 5 days they fought and many where killed. The 8th lost 100 killed and wounded. Capt. Cook was wounded here. On the 30th, they went to Cold Harbor and this battle lasted till June 3rd. The 8th. lost 275 killed,wounded, and captured. Lieut. Ritchie of Co. H., was killed and Major R. A. Barrier became Lieut. Col. and he commanded to the end of the War. They then went to Petersburg. on July 30th, am mine was sprung. in August, they fought near the railroad. Lieut. McAllister, of Company H, was wounded here. They stayed on the bank of the Apaamatox till September 29th, when the went to Richmond. On September 30. the big fight at Fort Harrison. The 8th. went in with 175 men and came out with 25. J.R. Barnhardt was captured and John V. Fisher was made Color Bearer. They stayed at Darbytown till December 22, and then went to Wilmington. Until January, 1865, and then in march to Kinston. Here the battle of Wise's Forks lasted 3 days. On April 26 the army surrendered and on May 2 the regiment was paroled and they return to their homes. The 8th fought 3 years and 8 months. Over 1,300 enlisted and at the end 150 presents.
