This is Dad, age 20.  He loved to tell the story about standing inspection in the Marine Corps.  He said that the Drill Sargeant ran his hand across the young marine's cheek, saying loudly, "Close shave!  Good job.  Follow his example, men."  
Dad laughed, "I only had to shave once every 2-3 days to get this 'close shave.'"  
It was years before he had to shave every day.
