( Dictionary of Buddhism )

DHARMA = NATURE

Before entering the priesthood, Lord Buddha at that time though as a Prince in a big palace had somehow seen and realized that life is but repetition and unavoidable, unwanted series of unhappiness: getting born; getting ill; getting aged and dying.

Feeling that there must be some answer, some real answer out there somewhere, the Prince decided to leave this luxurious life, getting in the priesthood in searching of the answer of how to get out of this wheel of unhappiness.

Years later, after many manners and methods of searching and looking for the answer, at one certain moment and with the right way of conducting, he got enlightened. All the truth, the ultimate truth are revealed through his insight meditation.

Through this enlightenment, the Lord Buddha knew all the answers then. He found out that it is because of 'Not-Knowing' (Avijja; ignorance; nescience; lack of knowledge; delusion) that leads to Life and delusion, leads to have to be born, to getting deeper and deeper in the Wheel of Rebirth. Also had he found out that to get out of this Wheel of Rebirth or this wheel of unhappiness, one must get to see things or nature or everything in the way they really are. In short this means one has got to 'Know' (Vijja; knowledge; transcendental wisdom; the Threefold of Knowledge) in order to stop this wheel of sufferings. And the only way to get to 'Know' things the way they really are is only through Satipattana (the four Foundations of Mindfulness; setting up of mindfulness) and through Vipassana-bhavana (Vipassana = insight; intuitive; vision; introspection; contemplation; intuition; insight development).

In short the Essence of Dharma is Dukkha (1. n. suffering; misery; woe; pain; ill; sorrow; trouble; discomfort; unsatisfactoriness; problematic situation; stress; conflict adj. Unsatisfactory; miserable; painful; subject to suffering ill ;causing pain 2. Physical or bodily pain) all caused by Avijja (not-knowing) and how to get out of all these Sufferings (= Get to 'Know' or get enlightened through the four Foundations of Mindfullness and Vipassana-bhavana).

LIFE = DUKKHA (SUFFERING)
CAUSE OF LIFE AND SUFFERING = NOT-KNOWING (AVIJJA)
EFFECTS = WHEEL OF REBIRTH, SUFFERING
STOP THE WHEEL = STOP THE SUFFERING
TO STOP THE SUFFERING = KNOWING (VIJJA)
TO KNOW = SETTING UP MINDFULNESS
    AND INSIGHT DEVELOPMENT

The essence of 'Dharma' is nothing exciting but the very simple 'Reality' or the very truth or also can be called the Absolute truth of the Nature.

In order to get enlightened with the Absolute truth, One needs only gradually develop one own's body and mind through
[I] practicing moral conduct [Sila or Sikkhapada = 1. morality; moral conduct. 2. a precept; rule of morality; training rule.]
[II] mental discipline (Samadhi = concentration; one-pointedness of mind; mental discipline)
[III] Panna (= wisdom; knowledge; insight; discernment; reason) from setting up of mindfulness [Satipatthana = (the four) Foundations of Mindfulness; setting up of mindfulness.] and insight meditation.

Through these methods, one will gradually clean up the body and mind from the defilements. And this is the one and only path To the Utmost wisdom [Panna] That can lead to peace and happiness In daily life And to the most peace and the most happiness Known as 'Nirvana'

[ Nirvana, Nibbana = The extinction of the fires of greed, of hatred and of ignorance; the Unconditioned; the supreme goal of Buddhism; the Final Goal; the extinction of all defilements and suffering.]
