Prop Carving 101

Member Bruce Hotz did a presentation about how he's carving his own propellers at our last meeting. The propellers he had there that he made looked like good props. He's also posting his ideas about carving your own prop on his website and is actually doing step by step lessons on making wooden props. I've visited this site and have printed his lessons up to lesson three...Very interesting!

Wanna look?? Try HTTP://home.cfl.rr.com and then scroll down to aircraft and you'll find this.

Be on the lookout!!

Look for a big footed guy, riding a bicycle with a big seat, pulling a cart with a generator on it, talking on a hand held aircraft radio!

On the night of Monday Feb. 11, 5 or 6 hangars at Dunn were broken into and a number of items stolen. My hangar was one of these. Missing are a King KX99 hand held nav/com radio and a boom box type radio/tape player, Charlie Vaughn lost a bicycle and a cart, another guy lost a generator and a hand held radio, Ralph Moore had his fire extinguisher discharged. Enough stuff is missing to make it a felony so it could be serious for those burglars when they get caught. The hand held radios are not very marketable because they aren't of too much use to anyone unless they're interested in aviation if they try to sell them. They could be used to interfere with air traffic control if some who was smart enough to use them had em. These burglars aren't very smart though. You see, in our hangar we have a refrigerator and these guys raided that too. They only stole the Coca Cola and the chocolate chip cookies and left Loretta's famous cream puffs alone! Loretta is a little miffed that they didn't seem to want these. Pat says when he saw the foot prints left in the residue from Ralph's fire extinguisher he figures that someone was wearing Nikes about size 14 and we should go over to the basketball court and look for them shoes on one of the players.. Yeah, and maybe he'd be talking to his drug dealer on an aviation frequency on the hand held if they're smart enough to use them. The dealer might be riding a bicycle with a big seat! (Charlie's) So keep your eyes peeled for that scenario or a big footed guy on a bicycle with a big seat pulling a cart with a generator on it talking over what looks like a walkie talkie. Oh, you might hear him on the Dunn frequency too ( cause that's the freq. I had it on) and he won't sound like any of our local pilots either! Got it??

This month's flying

Melrose Landing was the place to be on 9 Feb. This little fly-in community airport has a wonderful fly-in breakfast every 2nd Sat. of every month and 52L took me there in fine style on that Saturday. I looked around Dunn for anyone who I could take with me but there was no-one around. I'd watched Tony Gyngell leave in his Archer, Gene Driggers in his Titan, and Jim Garrison with a load in his Bonanza and I wanted to fly so we headed up there. As always there was a number of mighty fine looking airplanes there to look at and I enjoyed looking at them. Loretta and I flew way down to Space Coast Regional for coffee one day and that was very pleasant too. A ride just clear the cobwebs and a trip to Deland for one of those big sandwiches with wifey was fun.

Auto pilot working now!

Jim Garrison's Century Autopilot is finally working properly! Century, after giving Jim a lot of aggravation and run around has finally admitted that there is a problem with the model of autopilot that he bought and sent him a schematic with the changes to be made on the circuit board. A jumper here and resistor there and a capacitor over here and it will work. So Jim took the unit out of the plane and down to a shop and the work was done and finally, he has a working model of that Century autopilot. He says it works great! Bout time eh?

Presidents Report

Too much stress in this job!!!!!!

We've Got Flyers!

This kind of flyer is for our up and coming Pietenpol/Antique (and everything else) Fly - In Event coming up on May 18, we have 100 homemade computer generated flyers ready for us members to hand out and post everywhere it is of interest. You know, places like Spruce Creek, Valkeria, Melrose Landing, Deland, Merritt Island Sun n 'fun, etc etc....... Pick a few up and hand these out, or leave in an airplane, or post on a bulletin board, you know whatever we have to do to help get the word out. I guarandamtee you the best way to get people here is to hand them to individuals around airplanes at airports and talk it up! We'll have these at our chapter meeting on March 6.

March Chapter Meeting Program

Mr David Edwards Executive Director of TICO has graciously agreed to address our chapter at the March 6th meeting. Be sure to be there to listen to what he has to say.

Need decals or signs?

At the February meeting, Chris Garrison told us about his new whiz bang computerized vinyl decal and sign maker. He is capable of making most any decal and can scan your own art work or design and make a decal out of it for a reasonable price. He showed us samples of the Smilin 'Jack chapter logo that we own for EAA Chapter 866 and one that depicted a parachutest decal that he made for the jump center. He can reproduce the Cessna or Piper art in the form of decals to replace yours on your plane if you have it repainted etc. He can make signs for on your office door. There just ain't no end to what he can do with this magic machine. Need any of this stuff? See Chris.

Sounds interesting

Board of Directors Meeting

The bored met on Feb. 20th and discussed the following, if my memory serves me correctly!

We may approach some authority concerning security at Dunn Airpark and even possibly volunteer our services to NASA or Brevard Sheriff's Dept. as a way to help improve the image of General Aviation with our role as an EAA chapter and as local pilots. Do you have any ideas about this? We discussed selling our spare continental engine at Sun n Fun and decided against that and instead use other means to do this. Do you have any ideas about this? Since Mr. Edwards has agreed to attend our March 6 meeting we want to come up with a list of questions we may have concerning the three airports under his management. Do you have any ideas about this?

Mr. David Edwards to Address Chapter Meeting This Month

TICO Executive Director, David Edwards has agreed to address our chapter at the march 6th meeting. What we should be doing to prepare for this is to have a list of questions for Mr. Edwards. How about some of your questions? If you have any please get them to me ASAP so that we can have a list for Mr. Edwards to review ahead of time. This will respectfully save some of Mr. Edward's time while he's with us. Lets welcome him and show a spirit of co-operation and respect so that when we have concerns, he and the authority might be open to our input on these matters. Our Chapter is an asset to the aviation community here in Brevard County and we need to show that we are.

Wow, Right Here in River City!! November 19, 2001

TICO

This information was garnered from the minutes of the regular monthly meeting of the TICO Authority

Mr. Edwards addressed the article in the New York Times and the Orlando Sentinel. This was relative to finding some propaganda material in Afghanistan in either houses or caves that identify Walkwitz Aviation as one of the flight training facilities. The Phoenix flight training school in Daytona Beach was also mentioned. Please be aware, board members may get a telephone call regarding this article, as reporters have asked for board member names and phone numbers.

Our own Sam Beddingfield Quoted in Florida Today Newspaper!

On Wednesday Feb. 20, the front page feature was on NASA's Mercury missions and the 40th anniversary of John Glenn's first trip into space. Sam was very involved in the Mercury Mission and is quoted in the article concerning the amount of space in the capsule. His quote reads, "If you were taller than 5' 11", you wouldn't fit, and Glenn was about at that mark." In another paragraph Sam is quoted as saying, "A lot of it, we had nothing to pass judgement on other than what we thought." "We didn't have anywhere to go to look up something."Then Sam went on to say, "I wasn't (tense) but the atmosphere was ." "My sweat was not over until it landed because I packed the parachute."

Are we not privileged to have a member like Sam in our midst?

Have You Noticed?

Have you noticed how our membership has grown lately? Last count from Neale "cook the books" Cranston is 35 members. Of these, I have EAA national numbers for about 23 of our members. Of the 35 members 15 are either flying or building their own airplanes. Some are doing both. Others are flying beautifully restored antiques and other production planes.

Now this garnered from a new EAA service called Chapter Minutes sent to me on the computer.

Chapters will find that their goals parallel the goals of EAA, your association. The efforts of EAA essentially fall in four main categories:

* Protecting the Right to Fly (Airport Activism, Aviation's Voice, ...)

* Promoting Access to the Dream of Flight (Flying Start, Chapter activities, fly?ins, Young Eagles, ...)

* Preserving the Heritage of Flight (Restorations, B?17 Tour, Countdown to Kittyhawk, ...)

* Preparing the Future of Flight (Young Eagles, Flying Start, Youth Camps, ...)

The 4 P's (Protect, Promote, Preserve and Prepare), mirror the efforts of Chapters and Squadrons in their local communities and beyond. Ultimately, in order to succeed in the 4 P's we need to get more people involved and this is where your membership efforts come in. Recruiting new members is part of this puzzle but it is also imperative to have a high level of member involvement and satisfaction with your current members. If they aren't having fun, if they aren't learning new things and if they aren't feeling

like they are getting value out of your Chapter, then they are not going to remain active members. So as a Chapter and as a Membership Committee you need to focus on keeping existing members satisfied while at the same time growing the Chapter through new members. This is a challenge and we are going to work on this together.................. EAA

HELP!

maybe you can tell that I'm desperate to find materials to include in your newsletter to make it more interesting to our members and others who receive this.

Please, contribute to this by writing articles, or pointing something out, or telling me flying stories, or reporting on your project. I'm runnin out of stuff and may go nuts lookin for materials for next month if you don't help out.

February Monthly Breakfast

Fog, then low ceilings prevented our breakfast from being a fly-in event this time. (Almost nobody flies in anyway) We know Jackie Johnson woulda flown in if the wx would co-operate! Hey, we got enough breakfasts sold to at least cover the expenses of the month's newsletter mailing and some left over to use toward the rent. That is unless Mr. Cook da books does some creative book keeping. Three bucks for breakfast that includes pancakes, sausage, grits, biscuits and gravy, wow what a deal!! How do we do it?? Cheap help, that's how! Great job by the faithful membership setting up, cooking, eating, and cleaning up. That guy who was in charge this time is a hard nosed slave driving individual! Give one of those retired Navy guys a little authority and they sure get CS. (CS, old Navy term, you figure it out) When clean up time came, he disappeared and came back just as we were buttoning the place up. Said he had to get to the Post Office or something. Yeah right, I think he has a girl friend! Things went a lot better without the boss as they usually do anyway.

Spark Plugs

I have about 10 or so spark plugs for a Lycoming 360, which I will not longer be using-I will either offer them for slae directly to any of our members, or a swap for something I can use, what ever-they are all celaned and packed last I saw.
